The Love Hypothesis
The Love Hypothesis | Ali Hazelwood
When a fake relationship between scientists meets the irresistible force of attraction, it throws one woman's carefully calculated theories on love into chaos. As a third-year Ph.D. candidate, Olive Smith doesn't believe in lasting romantic relationships--but her best friend does, and that's what got her into this situation. Convincing Anh that Olive is dating and well on her way to a happily ever after was always going to take more than hand-wavy Jedi mind tricks: Scientists require proof. So, like any self-respecting biologist, Olive panics and kisses the first man she sees. That man is none other than Adam Carlsen, a young hotshot professor--and well-known ass. Which is why Olive is positively floored when Stanford's reigning lab tyrant agrees to keep her charade a secret and be her fake boyfriend. But when a big science conference goes haywire, putting Olive's career on the Bunsen burner, Adam surprises her again with his unyielding support and even more unyielding...six-pack abs. Suddenly their little experiment feels dangerously close to combustion. And Olive discovers that the only thing more complicated than a hypothesis on love is putting her own heart under the microscope.

Farewell, outlier island! I get to sit with the cool kids now because I adored this wildly popular book!

Can you recommend any romcom books that are similar to this one?

Emily92Bibliophile I‘m very new to the adult contemporary romance genre similar to The Love Hypothesis- I‘m surprised I liked it! I would definitely try Emily Henry‘s books! 9h
abookishbutterfly @Emily92Bibliophile Same, as far as being new and feeling surprised! You‘re the second Emily Henry rec I‘ve gotten so I definitely need to try her! 9h

⭐⭐⭐1/2 (It's more than So-So but not a Pick)
I went into this book with very high hopes (the fake dating trope is one of my favourites) that in the end were not met. This novel just falls into the average romance category for me..
This was my #doublespin for January

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫I was anticipating this one based on so much hype & great reviews -& I was not disappointed! It was a great read. Olive was funny & ridiculous without being annoying, the fake dating is always a winner for me, & the issues shown of women in academia/STEM were presented well. I missed having the story from Adam‘s point of view, which I think is really my only complaint. Definitely one I recommend,& I‘ll be looking for more from Hazelwood!

The characters were well thought out and seemed relatable, which is always a plus for me!

I found the meet-cute for this book cringe worthy, thought the miscommunication trope lasted too long, was frustrated by the immature actions of highly intelligent scientists, and Anh pushing the PDA - that was weird. That said, I had a pile of fun reading this book and look forward to book 2. Weird, right!?

megnews It‘s funny how you can write a review about all the stuff you didn‘t like but in its totality like a book. Sometimes that‘s just how it is. 6d
Suet624 I felt exactly the same way about everything you stated. And yet, somehow, enjoyed the book. 6d
marleed @megnews @Suet624 I was wrapping my thoughts around this story to make this post and wondering why did I like this book. Truth is, I don‘t know. I can give myself more reasons not to like it. But I just liked it - funny how that works. I can watch a new hallmark movie and pretty much do the same thing - and then set the record button for the next premiere! 5d

I didn‘t want to read this; I refused. But then my daughter‘s friend asked her if I had read it, and I said “Screw it, let‘s check it out.” And I am so glad I did! Holy cow, it was funny and romantic! I was so frustrated with Olive and Adam (in a good way, if that makes sense), and I just loved their story! Thanks to my daughter‘s friend for asking because I loved it! (I may be a little tipsy 🍷 so I‘m rambling, but ugh read it!)

Thanks to Litsy and, in particular, @JulesG @Jas16 and @Reggie, I found this book and devoured it in one sitting. I don't usually read romance but apparently maybe I should? Because I needed this book right now. Funny, light, sexy (eventually), and a sweet romance. The author developed her characters and I've been thinking about all of them since I finished reading it. Thanks to all who recommended it.

🎧📚 oh I loved this book. Yes. The MC is a liar … such a liar !! and I hate liars … but her lies started with protecting a friend … yes the piling on of lies was increasingly annoying … but the book was cute enough that the romance trope used here was forgiven 😆 as far as romances go … and you know how much I don‘t like this genre …

Olive, a 3rd year PhD student and Adam, a terrifying professor, fake date (don't want to spoil the reasoning behind it). It was a refreshing change of pace with this story trope. There was no damsel in distress, needing the man to rescue her. It was awesome to see a story set place in the STEM environment. Witty banner. The overbearing best friend, Anh, was a bit too much for Me. Overall I definitely see what the hype is all about with this book.

I loved this book. Somewhere around page 155 last night, I realized I had laughed on almost nearly every page. And it mostly went on like that until the end. Olive is a grad student at Stanford trying to do something nice for her friend when she accidentally falls into a fake dating relationship with a dreaded faculty member. Olive has these moments where she will internally spin out into the extreme that had me chuckling the whole time. 👇🏼

Reggie One of her best friends calls her Kalamata ( get it?!!! Cause her name is Olive! Lol) in the most endearing way. The supporting cast is great. The whole book is subtly self aware of its rom-comminess. I can‘t say enough good things about this book. Thank you again, Jennifer @Jas16 for this book. I loved it! ❤️❤️❤️ 1mo

GatheringBooks Oooh sounds like so much fun. A laugh-out-loud book is the best, no matter the genre! 💕💕 4w
Nute In December, my irl Bookclub makes reading selections for the next year. Each member makes 2 recommendations. The previous month, many members stated that they wanted to read more books that allowed for escapism from real life…more genre reading. I put forth this book and a horror selection(I know that I would have made you proud with the latter book). Since we had absent members at that meeting, the present members could make more than 2 recs👇🏽 4w
Nute I put forth this book and I also recommended 2 mystery books. Well, they pounced on the two mystery novels. Neither Love Hypotheses nor the horror book which I will share the title with you after I read it (for the pure shock of the moment😆) were selected. I was slightly disappointed. I had already disagreed with the decision to bypass literature that prompts difficult/challenging/in-your-face discussions of real living, but I understood👇🏽 4w
Nute that the pandemic has made a need for moments of uplift or a planned time of ignorant bliss…more like oblivion. So I rolled with it. Anyway, I thought for sure that they would go for the cutesy romance. Not one vote!😵‍💫 So you can imagine the PURE EXCITABLE JOY I felt when I read this post from you! Way to go, Reggie! YOU ARE MY ECLECTIC READING TOUCHSTONE!!! My reading ACE! The stars aligned when Litsy made a way to meet you, Reggie!👇🏽 4w
Nute Yay, me, or Yay, you! Same thing!🤗 So happy that you enjoyed this book!💕🙂 4w
Reggie @Nute I am so excited to read about what horror selection you put forth. Also, totally peanut butter and jealous that you are in a bookclub. I can totally relate to them because it feels like for a year I‘ve been chillin in the land of horror. Well, they missed out, passing this up, because this was utter joy. I don‘t remember the last book I smiled so hard on while reading. Your bookclub is lucky to have you, my reading friend. I cannot do 👇🏼 4w
Reggie justice to your reviews in words in how thoughtful and such a deeper and calm inducing breathing your reviews and book talk generate. See how awkward that sentence was . Lol you are someone whose posts I always look forward to, Kimberley! (edited) 4w

This was smart, funny, a tad over-spicy in parts for me (am I a romance wimp?? I think I might be. 😆), and an overall very good read for a busy and sometimes heavy time.

marleed Haha - I‘m a steamy romance wimp, as well, and laugh thinking about the why of it. I‘ve even talked to my daughter and DIL about it. They were hs agish when 50 shades came out as a sort of mainstream book. I think they‘ve had conversations with friends (and dare I say lovers) that I just never had. So somehow reading it even on my own is not really in my comfort zone. 1mo
Christine @marleed I love your analysis of this! Makes sense to me. In my case, I‘m curious as to why I don‘t mind steamy in movies/TV but sometimes do in books. I think it‘s a combo of anatomically-focused descriptions (why?? 🤣) and the fact that, when I‘m reading, the characters come to life in my head and so it feels voyeuristic. 🤷‍♀️ 1mo
