In the Acknowledgments, Gonzalez describes her book as a “big, weird novel.” It is that. At times, I thought it was too big. I fell asleep on the couch more than once trying to finish it. This might be due to the dying light of winter rather than anything intrinsic about the text. When all is said & read & done, I think Xochitl Gonzalez is a real talent. Dederer‘s “Monsters” would make a fab companion text, particularly the chapter about mothers.
