The Cat Who Saved Books
The Cat Who Saved Books | S?suke Natsukawa

Grandpa used to say it all the time: books have tremendous power. But what is that power really? Natsuki Books was a tiny second-hand bookshop on the edge of town. Inside, towering shelves reached the ceiling, every one crammed full of wonderful books. Rintaro Natsuki loved this space that his grandfather had created. He spent many happy hours there, reading whatever he liked. It was the perfect refuge for a boy who tended to be something of a recluse. After the death of his grandfather, Rintaro is devastated and alone. It seems he will have to close the shop. Then, a talking tabby cat called Tiger appears and asks Rintaro for help. The cat needs a book lover to join him on a mission. This odd couple will go on three magical adventures to save books from people who have imprisoned, mistreated and betrayed them. Finally, there is one last rescue that Rintaro must attempt alone . . . The Cat Who Saved Books is a heart-warming story about finding courage, caring for others and the tremendous power of books. Sosuke Natsukawa's international bestseller, translated from Japanese by Louise Heal Kawai, is a story for those for whom books are so much more than words on paper.

Lovely book about the love of books!
A typically Japanese fantasy story that one should especially (re-)read when life seems out of your own control and you need some motivation and courage to go on.

Loved it!

Definitely a fun distraction that book lovers will enjoy reading. I can't say I was blown away with it but it transported me to a fantastical world where the mission was to save books. And the snarky feline companion was a great sidekick as well.

There are also some truly beautiful passages about grief as the main character deals with the loss of his grandfather.

(I finally jumped on the #Bookly train!) This #audiobook was fun for us book-lovers, and the cover is 😍, but I would probably never reread it, nor was I wowed by it. As I'm getting back to reading for fun, and also going through a challenging time in my life, it was a comfortable audiobook to sink into while on airplanes or driving to my grandfather's funeral. A pick if you're in the mood for a cozy book-loving aesthetic/vibe 💕

Our family finally got around to opening gifts for my birthday (last Friday) and husband‘s Father‘s Day. My mom @Doll8455 sewed all the table toppers (isn‘t she brilliant?), the fam got me the books and Dickens puzzle, my in-laws in England gave me the necklace, and I gave myself the bee puzzle. It was a gorgeous birthday and I couldn‘t wait to share it with you all! PS I just realized I can read the books for #Japan #foodandlit!

LiteraryinLawrence Aww, so glad you enjoyed your special day! 4mo

First read for May. It was a nice read and made me think about books in new ways. The only thing is I wanted to know more about the cat. Thanks @Yuki_Onna for including this in my swap package.

This also fits the #roaringwolf prompt #1 - Animal. For a book that has an animal the appears regularly. @Roary47 @Littlewolf1

Roary47 Whew sorry it‘s been a few weeks since I‘ve been able to be on. This looks super cute! 🥰💛 5mo

Thank you so much @Yuki_Onna !!!!! I love it all so much. My son already ran off with the gummies and my mother stole a package of the other ones. The caramels are sooooo good! I am going to hide those from my family! Lol. Love the book choices and am so excited to read them! You spoiled me! Thank you so much!

Cats and books- two of my favorite things... this is bound to be great, right?

I picked up this and 2 other books when I took the kids to the library this morning, despite sternly reminding myself of the stack of books I already have at home and promising myself that I wouldn't check any out... Oops!

SpookyDonut This is on my TBR! My friend read this and absolutely loved it! 5mo

Maybe it was the wrong time, but I couldn‘t get into it. A talking cat, an orphaned boy, “saving” the books. Bailed.

Simple fantasy tale about a talking cat and a boy that works in a second-hand bookstore.
"Books have souls," repeated the cat softly."A cherished book will always have a soul. It will come to its reader's aid in times of crisis".

I love anime and this book is like an anime in print. How the characters are described were so vivid. It transported me in a world I can 100% relate. Cats, books, bookshop, fiction, youth, losing a loved one..

This is an interesting fantasy. But gets a little preachy in between. I liked how a cat drove the story.

This book is whimsical. It reminds us why we read, and the power of reading. It‘s also a nice story about the young protagonist‘s coming to terms with grief, and finding courage and friendship in his life. An enjoyable light fantasy read, maybe aimed at younger adult readers. I only wished the references made were not entirely from the ‘western canon‘.

I absolutely love this book so far! Such a short, surreal little story about a reclusive young Japanese man, a very special cat and books that need rescuing! Chaplin is jealous that HE is not on the cover! ? #catsoflitsy #littenkitten #chaplin

Let me preface that I absolutely hate magical realism, with the exception of when a Japanese author writes them. For people who love books (which I assume is anyone reading this), this will charm the pants off of you.

Cute fantasy story about books and reading. Relevant to the current reading trends. A high school kid and talking cat rescuing books may sound weird but story is much more deeper, with a good message. And who doesn‘t love combination of books, cat and adventure! 4.5🌟 #wintergames2021 #impulseread #teamgamesleighers #anywayyoureadathon #littenlisten #averymerryreadathon 5hrs +11 points

A cute story about the power of books. In the wake of his grandfather's death, homebody Rintaro will soon have to leave their beloved used bookstore behind to live with a distant aunt. But then a tabby cat shows up requesting his help to rescue some books, whisking him off on a series of adventures that help him open back up to the world. A fun read for book-lovers.

This was a short, cute, listen but not as ‘different‘ as I had hoped. I was expecting a ‘quirky‘ Japanese tale but instead it was fairly standard fantasy fare, which isn‘t really my thing. It also felt quite YA, which I don‘t think it is billed as.

Still, who doesn‘t like a book about books, and the addition of a talking cat always improves things! A good little palate-cleanser.

kathedron My daughter is currently reading this! 😺 12mo
