My husband is half Swedish, and in Sweden they celebrate name days ( definitely not the only country to do this 😉) and I‘m celebrating by having chips and wine with my reading time on a Tuesday. I‘ve spent 3 days in the same grade 5 classroom and I have never been so ‘childsplained‘ to in my life #treatmyself

TheBookHippie Just NO to GRADE 5 😵‍💫 #OYTOTHEVEY 3d
mcctrish @TheBookHippie they are a weird cauldron of being old enough to advocate for themselves but too young to see beyond themselves 3d

We‘re two weeks away from this month‘s #LiteraryCrew #BuddyRead discussion! I know some of us have found this to be not to be an easy read, and that‘s okay! Even if you‘re not quite into the book or had to put it down, feel free to join the discussion on the 30th.

Any thoughts to share so far?

mcctrish I‘m 65 pages in and after The Brothers Karamazov this is light 😆 but I am going slowly 3d
Librarybelle @mcctrish 😂 I love that comparison! 3d
See All 13 Comments
BarbaraJean I‘ve found it slow going after the opening section—I just finished part 3 and feel like I‘m still waiting for the book to get going! I thought the back and forth of the timeline in part 2 was an interesting choice—it was a bit confusing. But I‘m finding Thomas a fascinating character! 3d
Librarybelle @BarbaraJean Thomas is a fascinating character - agreed! 3d
Mollyanna It took me a minute to get used to the writing style, but now that I am, I‘m enjoying it. 3d
PurpleyPumpkin I feel like reading the audiobook is helping. I‘m enjoying the writing but find this a bit of a heavy read. It‘s holding my interest though! 2d
Librarybelle @PurpleyPumpkin Yes - heavy reading indeed! Glad the audiobook is helping! 2d
Cuilin I think it has one of the best opening chapters ever. Brutal, but you can‘t stop reading. 2d
Jerdencon I‘m sort of trudging along with this one. About 1/2 way done and hoping to finish most of it before I go on vacation next week and the library takes my e book back! 2d

Off the TBR and beside my bed now. The first seven pages is the cast of characters and family trees aka my first night reading and I thought “good grief, am I up for this ?!” and promptly fell asleep 😆 last night I got sucked right in with the story proper 🙏🏻

I think maybe this has sent me down more Wikipedia rabbit holes than any other novel I've ever read. It's truly a masterpiece, but also *a lot* and it's taken me an age to read. So I'm not going to be sorry to finish it (maybe today?).

rubyslippersreads I need to read the sequels, but you‘re right—it‘s a daunting task. 3w
Ruthiella Loved this series. The first book is a lot but the second is a breeze (you‘ll see) and then you have to see it to the end in book three. 3w
Tamra I‘ve wanted to try this, but it does seem daunting! 3w

batsy I loved this one but I've left a long gap between that and the rest (I've yet to read the other two). A relief to hear the 2nd is a breeze 😅 @Ruthiella 3w
Ruthiella @batsy It really is ! It‘s the shortest, Mantel is clearer about the use of he (Cromwell) , and the narrative of Anne Boleyn is more familiar than that of Cardinal Wolsey. 3w
quietjenn @rubyslippersreads I think I'm going to take a month or two off, but try to get to the next one after that. I don't want to wait too long and lose the thread, so to speak ... 2w
quietjenn @Ruthiella I've heard that about the second book! I'm going to take a little bit of a breather, but hopefully return to it soon. 2w
quietjenn @Tamra It's worth it, but definitely not the easiest reading I've ever done 😏 2w

After I got used to the quirks of Mantel's writing along with the fact that every other person in the book is either named Thomas or Mary, I was way more into this book than I ever thought I'd be. Especially considering that it's history, and I already knew what was going to happen. "Omg, will Anne Boleyn become queen?? What is going to happen to Thomas More??" I'm excited to read the second one in the trilogy.

I love historical fiction and I‘ve gone through a couple different Tudor-obsessed eras in my life (might have a third coming on now), so I was expecting to love this book. At first, I struggled with the writing style/narration, but when I got used to that, I just sort of slogged through. I appreciate the novelty of this story through Cromwell‘s eyes, but there was so much to this and it moved SO slowly. Not sure I will continue the series.

⭐️⭐️⭐️

MrsMalaprop I read this years ago & struggled to get through it. I appreciated it in the end but have no intention of reading any others. 2y
AmyG I bailed for the reason that it was insufferably slow. 2y

Verity I‘ve read the first two but never the third - I know how it ends and I couldn‘t bring myself to slog through it to get to that. The TV version with Mark Rylance is very good though. 2y
sprainedbrain @Verity I think that‘s why I won‘t continue… I already know how it‘s going to go. 😂 2y
Ruthiella The second book is (a) shorter, (b) moves faster and (c) the best of the trilogy. I suggest you read Bring Up the Bodies and call it a dualogy. 2y
vivastory As someone who has been planning on reading this & now reading the above thread, it is clear that none of you are to be trusted 😂🤣 2y
vivastory Seriously though I have only read one Mantel book which I think you'd love (Beyond Black) but I've heard so many conflicting opinions on this I think I'll just have to try it for myself 2y
sprainedbrain @vivastory I will check that one out. And clearly I need to continue at least to Bring Up the Bodies, as @Ruthiella says. 😃 2y
vivastory I have also heard great things about her novel on the French Revolution: A Place of Greater Safety, but I haven't read it. I'm not really making many reading resolutions this year but I am hoping to finally read Bring Up the Bodies. I'll be curious to see what you make of book 2 & if you become a convert! 2y

This certainly kept me occupied ?. What a fascinating character Thomas Cromwell is! I had moments of confusion (does "he" refer to TC or the person he's talking to? I wonder if HM is deliberately wrong-footing me here.) and felt that something about the writing style was holding me at arm's length throughout (my default position for *people* but I like my books closer!) but it was thoroughly absorbing and I enjoyed it very much.

CarolynM The "he" thing got me too. Quite a few times I had to go back and reread whole pages because I thought she was talking about someone other than Cromwell? Great book, though, and I love Cromwell, so much so that I still can't bring myself to read the 3rd one?? 2y
quietlycuriouskate @CarolynM I know! I'm largely ignorant about this period of history but I do know how it ends for TC and I'm in no hurry to get there! 2y

This read started very haltingly for me, but once I got used to the over usage of “he” and the large cast list, I was hooked. I am not much of an Anglophile, but when I dive in I always end up enchanted. Mantel is a brilliant writer; the detail and historical research that went into this is astounding. Cromwell is a fascinating historical character, and Mantel brought humanity to this enigmatic man. Looking forward to finishing the trilogy! 4⭐️

If you can get past the writing style, where the use (overuse?) of “he” is the narrator referring to himself, then you come upon another stumbling block, the characters. Aside from Wolsey and Mary they felt like names on a piece of paper. I felt compelled to like our narrator but the narrative style didn‘t work for me. Wolf Hall has all the makings of a devious cobweb of delectable misery but for me it failed to connect.

This series has been on my TBR for quite some time and I made it a 2021 goal to finally read it. I‘m also using this one for West Europe in the Reading Around The World Challenge. #bookspinbingo

Cuilin Enjoy! One of my favorite series. 3y
