While I remember reading this book a long time ago I had forgotten about it and I‘m glad that I revisited it. It is a beautiful story and it discusses a feeling that many children might deal with everyday. I think it gives the reader a sense of reassurance.

This book is great for reading to kids are nervous about starting school for the first time. This story is heartwarming and beautiful. The illustrations used in the story are outstanding. They look more like sketches. All of the pages have illustration colors from edge to edge. The colors used are neutral and settle not too overwhelming. The color used for each page makes the animals look real and alive on the page.

The Kissing Hand is an animal fantasy story by Audrey Penn with illustrations by Ruth E. Harper and Nancy M. Leak. The story is about a little raccoon names Chester that is afraid to go to school because he will miss his mother. Chester‘s mother then gives him a kiss on his hand and tells him that whenever he misses her, he can press that hand to his cheek and it will be like she is there to give him a kiss. This book would do best as a

emilypalkovich storytelling because it is cute and light-hearted. Some activities that go along with this book are linked here: https://www.kindergartenworks.com/kindergarten-teaching-ideas/kissing-hand-freeb.... A UDL principle for this book would be to provide options for language and symbols because the kiss on the hand symbolizes his mother and her love for him. An EL strategy for this book could be number 3: encourage self talk (positive thinking). 4y
emilypalkovich This book could be read on the first day of kindergarten since many students may be nervous and miss their parents. So it is important to encourage self talk and positive thinking. #ucflae3414sp21 4y
DrSpalding Encouraging self talk that is positive is extremely important! We saw a lovely storytelling of this book on Thursday. This belongs in the primary classroom and should be read aloud or even used as a storytelling during the first weeks of school. I'm hoping it put him a bit at ease. Chester's mom will always be with him, even when he is at school. Would definitely recommend this book for the night before school.

The Kissing Hand, by Audrey Penn is a MF book about a loving raccoon mother, and a raccoon son who‘s having trouble leaving his mom to go to school. She kisses his hand, and tells him whenever he gets homesick, just think mommy loves you. Later that night, before school, Chester gives him mom a kiss on the hand and makes sure she knows that he loves her too. #ucflae3414su20

CameoD UDL principle 9.2 aligns very well with this book. It teaches students about how to deal with being homesick, and how to say goodbye, when going to school for the first time. Esol strategy 18 fits very well also, at the end of the book “I love you”, in ASL is drawn, and you could teach the class to say and do the command. https://www.kindergartenworks.com/kindergarten-teaching-ideas/kissing-hand-freeb... is a marvelous site for adorable resources 4y

MinDea I had a lil raccoon (and by lil I mean very fat and plump) that used to climb up my trellis to my balcony and eat whatever was up there for the birds ! 7y

One of my favorite books when I was a kid. I remember first reading this in kindergarten and my teacher gave each of the students little hearts to hold while we read the story. http://themes.atozteacherstuff.com/83/the-kissing-hand-first-day-activities/ #UCFLAE3414sp17

DrSpalding A teacher I know made a scavenger hunt finding "kisses" in different places around the school! 8y

This Animal Fiction book is really sweet! I enjoyed it and believe this would be a good book to read to your young students as it might help them feel more comfortable at school/in class if they have a kissing hand!

This website has many different resources for activities, lesson plans, and printables for implementing the kissing hand into your classroom!

This is a fiction story about a sweet raccoon nervous about going to school. The mother kisses the palm of his hand so that he has her love everywhere he goes. She tells him to think "mommy loves you" when it is against his cheek. In the end the baby raccoon kisses his moms hand and goes to school.
