Last week I finally got around to reading Dodie Smith‘s I CAPTURE THE CASTLE, which has been on my TBR list and in my possession for several years, and I‘m so glad I did. (Achievement unlocked!) Friends have been trying to make read it for ages, and it feels good not only to read a wonderful book (I love the introspection!) but also to check it off the list. Oh, and I got to eat yummy deli food.

I am a great fan of Rachel Hartman and the world she has created for her vibrant and beautifully complex characters. I‘m about a quarter of the way through so far, and I‘m not disappointed. TESS OF THE ROAD, the first of a new duology, comes out in a week, and the world will be better for it.

So far I'm enjoying this upper middle-grade fantasy that feels a bit like Sabriel and a bit like 1930s Harry Potter. The #audiobook is also well narrated (not always a given). For some reason I keep picturing the characters and settings in my mind in the styles of Studio Ghibli. Anyone else get the same vibes?

I've been hearing great things about Dear Cyborgs for months now, but about a quarter of the way in, I pulled the #Overdrive plug. More than anything I was confused, not able to keep track of when/where scenes were taking place. Just finished the audio book of The Ship Beyond Time, and it was a worthy follow up to its predecessor, The Girl From Everywhere. Time travel via ship, questions of fate verses choice, beautiful language, and interlocking story and timelines (not to mention traveling to exotic locales). This beautiful story is both uplifting and heartbreaking. Snyder depicts coming of age in a fresh new light in a unique setting. After the wonderfully astounding and epic conclusion of #JaneUnlimited (speculative fiction for the win!), I felt the need to read something equally complex, albeit more familiar. Final verdict: that was a wild ride. This book isn't for everyone, but it's just crazy enough--and busy enough--that it works. Physics, witchcraft, bureaucrats, military & secret ops, time travel, linguistics, economics, & engineering all strung together to create one complexly woven tapestry. Reads like A Discovery of Witches meets Doomsday Book meets The Martian (?) (which is weird, I know). Oddly good! #speculativefiction @WilliamMorrow
