This is a light pick. I haven‘t read a mystery set during the Holocaust before and I‘m just not 100% sure it worked. It wasn‘t a bad story but there wasn‘t anything that stands out as brilliant in this novel. I previously read & liked another by Hesse and plan to give her another chance in the future.
Great historical fiction set in Amsterdam. I met the author at the National Book Festival in 2019.
Went to the bookstore with mom @AmyK1 and picked up these two! I‘ve already read the one on the left, and loved it, so had to get the other too!
This was such a good book. I was transported to 1943 Amsterdam. I‘ve been to Amsterdam & it was great to read a book that takes place there. It was well-paced. Perfect mixture of character development & action/story. It was so well researched & that‘s always appreciated in a book. I felt for Hanneke & those she meets along the way. You could feel the strain of the Nazi occupation. I will definitely be reading more by this author!
Loved this one! Historical fiction set in Amsterdam during WWII and the German occupation. This one got lost in the mail for about a month and a half 😮 I'm so glad it finally arrived! #LMPBC #GroupG @suvata
Denise, it's getting dropped in the mail today! @Jerdencon @shellleigh33
Inspired in true facts that happened to Jewish infants during WWII in Amsterdam. Hanneke thought was surviving the war in the best way she could but she will learn that there are other terrible trues. Then, she will try to accomplish a promise, she will look for the girl in the blue coat. A fast pace read that goes from past to present. Hanneke sometimes is impulsive in her decisions putting in danger others. I like the writing style. 4⭐️
@shellleigh33 @Jerdencon Look what arrived yesterday while I was out of town! Woot woot 🙌! Postage date April 28...arrival June 12 😂 I'm so glad it was found! I'll get it read and send it on soon! Have either of you heard from Lauren? She no longer has her Litsy account and didn't respond to my email. #LMPBC #groupG
Book haul from today. The HP one was purchased second hand. And was 12 when they sell for 40 normally according to the tag
Excited to start this for #LMPBC @Jerdencon @laurenashley @staci.reads
This is a gripping, well-written historical mystery that I must say—I kind of loved!! I totally recommend this! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
A book about teenagers living in 1943 in an Amsterdam, that is occupied by Nazis. Main character Hanneke is good at finding and delivering black market things - but everything changes, when she is is requested to find a jewish girl- before the Nazis do. I was very much invested in the story, even though I didn‘t always like the main charakter‘s headiness- but she was just a teenage girl after all and is allowed to act like one😅 5/5🌟
Hanneke supports her family during WWII by working with the black market in Amsterdam. When one of her customers asks her to find a girl she‘d been hiding who had disappeared, Hanneke finds herself involved with the resistance & with a mystery to solve.

My club's next read - Didn't want to read it. Dreaded it. Procrastinated.
New generations of readers and learners are coming. They won't choose Anne or Corrie first to learn.
Hesse wrote a brilliant young adult novel along the lines of Ruta Sepetys. A jealous teen, not thinking, ruins lives. And while trying to fix her mistake, loses hers. Teens will understand and learn about the resistance movements. Then will research on their own.
My current read for my library book club, but wanted to say sorry for the flood. I've been behind on my posts and trying to catch up.
I THOROUGHLY enjoyed this! I honestly haven't read many books set during World War II outside of Germany, Russia, France and the United States so this was a nice fresh perspective. I loved the mystery of this with the missing girl and I have to commend the author for not taking the easy way out in this ending. I loved the main character and her interactions with the resistance.
Next up!

Wow! Just Wow! It‘s been a while since a read a book that was from the perspective of just one character, and it did not disappoint! Following Hanneke‘s story was just amazing! Everything made for a beautiful historical fiction, the love, the loss, the terrible war and the strength of those having to live through it. Absolutely loved this book!

Black markets, the Resistance, Nazis, and a missing girl make for a roller coaster ride of a story. Sad and atmospheric.
Belated but amazing birthday presents from my dear friend @taza_de_te 🥰❤️
100% would recommend. The story takes place during WW2 and takes you through the journey of young adults. It encompasses mystery, love, friendship, heartache and life. It isn‘t AS predictable of an ending as one would think while reading. Easy to read book, will finish quickly.
Not your ordinary WW2 story. Setting is Holland, with Jewish and nonJewish teens risking their lives as part of the Resistance
It's told through the eyes of Hanneke Bakker, an eighteen year old whose boyfriend was killed fighting during the German invasion. She is involved in finding and selling black market goods to the wealthier people in town but then becomes involved in searching for a missing girl. This causes her to cross paths with a group of young people involved in the resistance and she sees for herself what is happening in her own town.I cried several times it.
This book is about a brace girl named Hanneke who lives in Amsterdam during WW2. She works on the black market taking different items to people. But when one of her customers asks her to find a Jewish girl that she was hiding in her house and that has now disappeared. All Hanneke knows about the girl is she was wearing a blue coat. As she unravels the mystery she covers more than the truth. I can't imagine living in this time.
This one has been on my shelf since last Christmas !!

I loved listening to this book on audio. It's during world war2. This time it was the Dutch Jews. The main character is looking for a Jewish girl in a blue coat before the germans find her. I loved this book! #litsy #kindle #kindlefire #paperwhite #library
Finished this one for #BackPackEurope and the #GenreSwapPBC and absolutely loved it. It was such a beautiful story touching on the entire spectrum of emotions, showing the human side of the Holocaust in ways I hadn't previously considered.
The above pictured Hollandsche Schouwburg theatre (now a museum) was a heavily featured location in the book, one I'd be honored to visit one day in person.
Joining in on the #BackPackEurope literary travel adventure with the tagged book set in Amsterdam.
Off to explore 1940's Amsterdam!

Here is my ambitious #tbr for the #thirteeninthree #readathon hosted by the lovely @Samplergal. The tagged book is an ebook hence why it was not included in the picture lol. Good luck to everyone participating.
Another novel set in WWII featuring brave teens. This one is set in Amsterdam and features a teen girl named Hanneke who works on the black market and is asked to help find a Jewish girl who has run from her hiding place. Hanneke will get involved with the resistance and will have to come to terms with her own past if she wants to succeed. Won a 2017 Edgar Award https://cannonballread.com/2018/04/another-tale-of-brave-teenagers-in-time-of-wa...
Wow! This Iowa Reads selection is excellent! Amsterdam in 1944-Nazi occupation-what would be your act of resistance?
