Confessions of Young Nero
Confessions of Young Nero | Margaret George
"New York Times" bestselling author Margaret George has brought history to vivid life with her chronicles of queens and kings. Now, she turns her gaze to an Emperor... Built on the backs of those who fell before it, Julius Caesar s imperial dynasty is only as strong as the next person who seeks to control it. In the Roman Empire no one is safe from the sting of betrayal: man, woman or child. As a boy, Nero s royal heritage becomes a threat to his very life, first when the mad emperor Caligula tries to drown him, then when his great aunt attempts to secure her own son s inheritance. Faced with shocking acts of treachery, young Nero is dealt a harsh lesson: it is better to be cruel than dead. While Nero idealizes the artistic and athletic principles of Greece, his very survival rests on his ability to navigate the sea of vipers that is Rome. The most lethal of all is his own mother, a cold-blooded woman whose singular goal is to control the empire. With cunning and poison, the obstacles fall one by one. But as Agrippina s machinations earn her son a title he is both tempted and terrified to assume, Nero s determination to escape her thrall will shape him into the man he was fated to become an Emperor who became legendary. With impeccable research and captivating prose, "The Confessions of Young Nero" is the story of a boy s ruthless ascension to the throne. Detailing his journey from innocent youth to infamous ruler, it is an epic tale of the lengths to which man will go in the ultimate quest for power and survival."

I have two books in progress, but the #bookspin and #doublespin numbers came out today. This is my #doublespin and is all I want to read. I think I‘m going to make myself read at least a few chapters of one of the other books, but I will probably cave and start Nero later today.

TrishB I really enjoyed this one. Need to get to the follow up! 8mo

Nero starts off wanting to avoid becoming like his formidable mother who poisoned her way through husbands & to power with abandon, but he is gradually seduced (in more ways than one - eek!) to Agrippina's way of thinking. When he becomes Emperor he tries to throw off her influence & a battle of wills begins. It was a good read but there was just something missing for me so I rate it 3.5🌟

I‘ve been meaning to read a Margaret George novel as she‘s a fellow Madison resident. While Historical biography is not my usual genre, I really enjoyed the care, research, and thought that the author put into the novel. I will definitely read the sequel!

Another strong first person historical novel from Margaret George. Not only does she bring 1st century Rome vividly to life she also repositions Nero from the degenerate we mostly know him as to a significantly more nuanced character. Can‘t wait for the second part! (Photo taken in 2004 of the Forum from the Palatine Hill and is one of the first digital photos I ever took!)

Oh wow 🙌🙌 awesome historical fiction. Can't wait for the next one!! This has busted a few Nero myths that have obviously been in my brain from popular culture. Have been lost down the internet rabbit hole reading up on him. Great stuff.

Margaret George does not disappoint in this newest book. I thoroughly enjoyed her reimagining of the life of Nero told from his perspective. 👍

I have always hoped there was more to Nero than just "fiddling while Rome burned". After reading this and the afterward where Margaret George provides all of her sources, I am much more interested in Nero as an emperor and not just an evil figure in history. I realize this is historical fiction but I believe that the author dedicates an enormous amount of time to research and it has certainly piqued my interest. I want to know more!

minkyb Interesting! 8y
LittlePixels This is why I love Margaret George books. 😍 I've felt the same way after pretty much all of her books, but especially Cleopatra. That one really stuck with me. I just started this one, but it's shaping up to be another great read! 8y
JulieAnn @LittlePixels I liked Cleopatra and Helen of Troy. I need to reread them! I was impressed that she chose Nero rather than a more well known "hero" type figure. I'm excited for the follow up! 8y

I adore Margaret George and historical fiction. This new novel of hers was wonderful! She has attempted to make Nero palatable to today's readers and erase the stigma of his notorious past. While he still came across delusional and narcissistic, she did a nice job showing his artistic and "humble" side to an audience that has been led to believe he was a monster. ??
