The Night Ocean
The Night Ocean | Paul La Farge
From the award-winning author and New Yorker contributor, a riveting novel about secrets and scandals, psychiatry and pulp fiction, inspired by the lives of H.P. Lovecraft and his circle. Marina Willett, M.D., has a problem. Her husband, Charlie, has become obsessed with H.P. Lovecraft, in particular with one episode in the legendary horror writer's life: In the summer of 1934, the "old gent" lived for two months with a gay teenage fan named Robert Barlow, at Barlow's family home in central Florida. What were the two of them up to? Were they friends--or something more? Just when Charlie thinks he's solved the puzzle, a new scandal erupts, and he disappears. The police say it's suicide. Marina is a psychiatrist, and she doesn't believe them. A tour-de-force of storytelling, The Night Ocean follows the lives of some extraordinary people: Lovecraft, the most influential American horror writer of the 20th century, whose stories continue to win new acolytes, even as his racist views provoke new critics; Barlow, a seminal scholar of Mexican culture who killed himself after being blackmailed for his homosexuality (and who collaborated with Lovecraft on the beautiful story "The Night Ocean"); his student, future Beat writer William S. Burroughs; and L.C. Spinks, a kindly Canadian appliance salesman and science-fiction fan -- the only person who knows the origins of The Erotonomicon, purported to be the intimate diary of Lovecraft himself. As a heartbroken Marina follows her missing husband's trail in an attempt to learn the truth, the novel moves across the decades and along the length of the continent, from a remote Ontario town, through New York and Florida to Mexico City. The Night Ocean is about love and deception -- about the way that stories earn our trust, and betray it.

Would you recommend any of them?

The first third of this was great. The next two thirds were long, detailed biographies of men that ultimately didn't seem to add up. I see where he was going and possibly where he wanted to end up but it didn't work for me at all.

#ToB chose these 6 books as their 2017 #summerreadingchallenge and I did it--I read them all! And in a timely fashion too. The Night Ocean was my favorite, with Ill Will and Marlena also being excellent. Fever Dream was fascinating, but didn't feel finished. Temporary People is original, but I am not a fan of magical realism. A Separation was not for me. I am hoping some of these land in the next ToB.

ReadingEnvy I still need to get to Temporary People. I bailed on The Night Ocean but read the rest! Do you have a favorite? 2y
ReadingEnvy Doh you already said your favorite. I forgot I also bailed on A Separation. 2y
BarbaraBB I only see this post now. How good you finished them all. I only read Ill Will and The Night Ocean, but loved them both. I guess I'll have to read Marlene as well! When will the winner be announced? 2y
DreesReads @BarbaraBB I think at the end of this month? It was 2 books per month. I read them out of order a bit (I read them in the order they came from the library!) so got out of the loop a bit on the discussions. 2y
BarbaraBB Yeah, me too, I'll look it up. The winner will be part of the ToB in March, I thought. 2y

This was a fascinating read. It is about author Lovecraft, sure, but most of all is it a story about truth, about what is true and what to believe. I am not sure myself what to believe after finishing it! Weird! #tournamentofbooks

#bestreadsof2017sofar I have not had a great reading year. I had a 6-week slump from March into May. I haven't finished 40 books even--usually I am around 50. Trying to find my favorites showed what a drag the year has been--usually I would be struggling to choose 6. This year I have a screenplay, a graphic novel (series), a short story/novella, and just one wonderful big novel. *sigh*

BarbaraBB I just ordered The Night Ocean. I am so looking forward to it! 3y

I'm quite enjoying this book. I went in totally blind, and only picked it up because of the Tournament of Books (summer edition). My only issue is I haven't read, and don't know much about H P Lovecraft, so I am constantly wondering how much is true and how much is fiction!

Wow! I wasn't sure I would get through this, but ended up loving it. Yes it's about Lovecraft, but really it's about truth--what is truth, how do we know, how do we find it? I'm still struggling about what in this book is true--it's a novel populated by real people (and per the acknowledgements, descendants of those people provided source material--if that's true!). I would not have found this without #roostersummerreadingchallenge #ToB

Quickest bail in the east! Gorgeous gorgeous cover and I even like how the author is approaching the storytelling in a structural sense, but the obsessive focus on HP Lovecraft as the driving force of the book is just not going to work for me. I would still try another book by this author. Attempted for #tobsummerreading #tob

batsy Thanks for your thoughts. I was interested in the concept and drawn to the cover, but was wondering what it would be like for someone who's not too familiar with Lovecraft's work & life. (But that #tob #rooster thing sounds like fun & a way to get me to read some recently released fiction on my TBR 📚) 3y
Redwritinghood I bailed on this one, too. 3y
Leniverse This looks like my kind of thing though! And when I looked up the title I realised it is taken from a short story written by Lovecraft and Barlow. I thought I had read everything by Lovecraft, but my Complete Fiction doesn't have it! Or any of the other 5 stories they wrote together. I guess it's seen as more of a Barlow story. 🤔 Also... I thought Lovecraft didn't like to collaborate. I must know more now! 3y
Leniverse Aha! It's a Barlow story, yes. Just attributed to Lovecraft now. And the Paul La Farge book definitely goes on my TBR! http://www.newyorker.com/books/page-turner/the-complicated-friendship-of-h-p-lov... 3y
Billypar Funny, a half second before I scrolled down and saw the 'Bail' I was oohing over the cover. Weird how much that alone can pique your interest- guess that's why we still have the old saying. 3y

ReadingEnvy @merelybookish you might like it! 3y
ReadingEnvy @Well-ReadNeck would you try something else by the author? I felt like I would. 3y
ReadingEnvy @batsy I'm not sure. I'm familiar enough with Lovecraft to know I don't want to spend another novel in his world. But perhaps for someone less familiar it would serve to explore it in an interesting way. 3y
batsy @ReadingEnvy I get what you mean. I feel like that cover has a hypnotic effect, too, in making me want to read it 😁 3y
vivastory @merelybookish how is "ill will"? 3y
merelybookish @vivastory I'm not far in but I'm intrigued! 3y

Reading with cats is frequently difficult.

quote
MFD
Night Ocean | Paul La Farge

The words to describe it, I realized, with uneasy surprise, came from Lovecraft: a mephitic blast, or a nameless stench: words that have no particular power to terrify, until you find yourself in the presence of the thing to which they refer. Until you discover that there is a thing to which they refer.

Weirdly I am going to have to rate this book as a pick. H.P. Lovecraft was a prolific writer of weird science stories. However, I think this book is also in its own way a weird science story. I was both intrigued and disgusted. I give it a pick to read because I think that is really how this book was supposed to make you feel. Certainly twisted and weird, but fascinating as well. Not an easy read for sure

mjdowens Thank you! I need to stop looking for the "under-story" and just take the book for what it is saying about the people and their motivations. Sometimes a story is just that, a story in the sequence of what went on. 3y
