Lost Among the Living
Lost Among the Living | Simone St. James
England, 1921. Three years after her husband, Alex, disappeared, shot down over Germany, Jo Manders still mourns his loss. Working as a paid companion to Alex's wealthy, condescending aunt, Dottie Forsyth, Jo travels to the familys estate in the Sussex countryside. But there is much she never knew about her husbands originsand the revelation of a mysterious death in the Forsyths past is just the beginning All is not well at Wych Elm House. Dottie's husband is distant, and her son was grievously injured in the war. Footsteps follow Jo down empty halls, and items in her bedroom are eerily rearranged. The locals say the family is cursed, and that a ghost in the woods has never rested. And when Jo discovers her husbands darkest secrets, she wonders if she ever really knew him. Isolated in a place of deception and grief, she must find the truth or lose herself forever. And then a familiar stranger arrives at Wych Elm House

Sunday was a Simone St. James kind of day. I read Broken Girls 2 years ago and loved it. I love the portrayals of smart, independent females in Lost Among the Living

This was just ok for me. It didn‘t really pull me in and most definitely didn‘t get me out of my reading slump. Three weeks in and this is the first book I finished in the new year. I think I need to check my shelves for something lighthearted and engaging.

Butterflyamore Do you like Once Upon a Book Club? 12mo
Valink @Butterflyamore yes, it‘s a fun spin on a book subscription. I usually pass the boxes on to my sisters once I‘ve read them though and have only kept a few of the gift items, so it‘s a bit expensive to do every month. 12mo

I‘ve been in a reading slump lately, so I busted out this #onceuponabookclub box that I haven‘t read yet. Maybe the treats along the way will keep me going!

phatsallylee I love their concept of pairing items with parts of the book and then getting to open the items when you get to those pages. 13mo
CouronneDhiver I‘ve heard of this service before... looks fun! 13mo
tracey38 I haven't tried this box but I have always loved the concept of it, too. 13mo
Valink @Karkar @phatsallylee @CouronneDhiver @tracey38 It‘s a little expensive for me for a subscription, but a nice treat every so often. I got my niece books for Christmas and she said she is going to set up some treats to go with the books then send it on to her aunts (me!!!) to read in this style. I can‘t wait to see what she puts together for us! 13mo
tracey38 @Valink that's so sweet of her! How old is your niece? 13mo

This book was....atmospheric. Like watching an old black and white film noir. Suspenseful but simple. It wraps you in until you‘re all discombobulated. I have to say, the villain was the easiest guess which does take away from the thriller aspect, but I felt like the author was going for a good Hitchcockian experience where we‘re all in on the conversation and therefore it‘s not about what you know, but why you think you know what you know. 😍

DivineDiana Beautiful cover! You sold me! 2y
MellieAntoinette @DivineDiana I didn‘t expect it to be so good! I hope you love it! 2y

What a story! I enjoy historical mysteries especially when there are supernatural elements included. A lovely piece of work that the narrator helped bring to life. Just lovely!

Up next is an adventure with a hardcore lady type, Constance Kopp!!! 😁🤓🙌🏽

Audiobook edition! If I had to pick a favorite genre, it would probably be historical fiction. These are two audiobooks I have listened to in the past year that are set in the 20s. I really enjoyed both of them. ❤️

And here's my second half of #2016TopTenBooks My Man Jeeves (my first Wodehouse!), Lost Among the Living (another amazing WW1 era ghost story from Simone St James), Vinegar Girl (a Taming of the Shrew retelling that didn't make me throw things), A Veil of Vines (I do love Tillie Cole and her emotional romances!) and The Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood (a re-read, but one I find something new in every time)! Don't forget to tag me in yours!

This book was fantastic. The one thing I love about getting book subscriptions is receiving something that I might not have picked up otherwise. It tells the story of Jo who, after husband is lost in the war, becomes the paid companion of her husband's Aunt. It has pretty much everything you can hope for in a supernatural mystery. Read this book! #bookreview #supernatural #mystery #womensfiction #historicalfiction #review #bibliophile #mustread

Once Upon a Time October book box which means was a suspense paranormal novel with history touches.I liked Jo's character voice.Quite deferent woman for the 1920s.liked relationship between Dottie and Jo full of sarcasm and irony. You can find funny and sad scenes. Well described sometimes full of details allowing to imagine everything. Paranormal tone was present until the end but not 2 spooky. Developed in England. Don't' like bookish items.

Contains just the right amount of "non-scary" ghost story for me since I'm a chicken. A quick read that would be great while traveling. It was the right book at the right time and I really enjoyed it. This came in my #onceuponabookclub subscription box. The packages marked with page numbers are opened as you read, and really enhance the experience. ??????

Nebklvr I'm a chicken too but love these spooksters 3y

I finished this on audio tonight, and now I want to find more books by St. James. This was a perfect mix of historical fiction, mystery, and spooky ghost story, with a touch of romance. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Also, I've lost count of how many great books I have discovered via Audible daily deals that I had otherwise not even heard of. ❤️️📚

I love Simone's books & this is my new favorite. 1921, big rambling British house, mysterious disappearances & suspicious deaths, ghosts, family secrets, rumors, madness. Very gothic. What's not to love??

[DELETED] 2232195534 I think I have 3 or 4 of her books and haven't started any. This a good place to begin? 4y
Christy2318 @kaysreadinglife You can start with any of them. Some of the more recent ones have appearances or mentions of characters from earlier books but it's very incidental & won't affect your understanding of the book. 4y

Jo Manders is in perpetual limbo. Her husband has been MIA since WWI and now three years later she has taken a position as companion to his Aunt. Things are quite bad enough. Then she starts seeing a ghost and realizes her husband lied to her constantly. Will she escape this family with her life?

3.5 stars. Although this was not of of my favourite St. James titles, I definitely still enjoyed it. It was atmospheric, I liked the characters, and the premise was interesting. But I did guess the twist (I hate that!) and the book just wasn't as spooky as previous titles by this author.

MyBookLife I haven't read her at all, where do you suggest I begin? 4y
Ehbooklover @MyBookLife It really doesn't matter since the books are all stand alones, but I'd say try her first and best (IMO): The Haunting of Maddy Clare. 🙂 4y
