The Girl from Everywhere
The Girl from Everywhere | Heidi Heilig
Heidi Heilig's debut teen fantasy sweeps from modern-day New York City, to nineteenth-century Hawaii, to places of myth and legend. Sixteen-year-old Nix has sailed across the globe and through centuries aboard her time-traveling father's ship. But when he gambles with her very existence, it all may be about to end. The Girl from Everywhere, the first of two books, blends fantasy, history, and a modern sensibility. Its witty, fast-paced dialogue, breathless adventure, multicultural cast, and enchanting romance will dazzle readers of Sabaa Tahir, Rae Carson, and Rachel Hartman.Nix's life began in Honolulu in 1868. Since then she has traveled to mythic Scandinavia, a land from the tales of One Thousand and One Nights, modern-day New York City, and many more places both real and imagined. As long as he has a map, Nix's father can sail his ship, The Temptation, to any place, any time. But now he's uncovered the one map he's always sought1868 Honolulu, before Nix's mother died in childbirth. Nix's lifeher entire existenceis at stake. No one knows what will happen if her father changes the past. It could erase Nix's future, her dreams, her adventures . . . her connection with the charming Persian thief, Kash, who's been part of their crew for two years. If Nix helps her father reunite with the love of his life, it will cost her her own.

I came back out on deck, and Slate was at the helm, his strong hands on the wheel, looking for all world as though he intended to remain there. He called out to me.
“Well, Nixie? Where are we going next?”

I just love the concept and the characters in this book! I reread it at least once a year! The “magic“ is pretty unique and I love that the romance is more of a subplot.

Nix was likable main character and it was easy to relate to her. I didn't love the romance. It didn't have a big role in this book but I still wasn't a fan of it.

This had really unique atmosphere and setting felt vivid.

The writing was a bit flowery, sometimes I really liked it but sometimes I felt it tiresome.

The plot itself was solid and fast-pacing, but I felt that this still dragged at some points.

CrowCAH One of my fav books! I agree, a bit slow at points. But I fell for the romance 💘 The second book is worth the duology! 2y

It was the kind of August day that hinted at monsoons, and the year was 1774, though not for very much longer. I was in the crowded bazaar of a nearly historical version of Calcutta, where my father had abandoned me.

I think this book could have been a bit better. I‘ve had it on and off my TBR for a few years now.

It‘s about Nix who is a pirate, lives on a pirate ship and then can travel to different worlds and time periods if they have a map. Set mostly on Hawaii.

I picked this up for #pop22 because it‘s on a list for Pacific Islander authors.

#NovelNovember

Megabooks Interesting. I‘m sorry it wasn‘t quite as good as you hoped it would be. 2y

It's been a hot minute since I've been here, but I'm glad this little community exists. :) Hope everyone is doing well and staying safe!

This book is pretty interesting, but hoping to get through a hefty chunk on this gloomy Saturday and have a better opinion. Has anyone else read this one?

Some #audiocrossstitching this evening and I finished the tagged book. I liked the book but I think I was expecting a little something more from it. I‘m also very romance tired at the moment so that aspect of the book just annoyed me more than anything else. The adventure was good though. So yeah, liked it but didn‘t love it.

#7Days7Books DAY 6
Seven books that left a deep impression on me and changed me.

Another deep point of view novel. The story is just fantastic, going to different time periods using a map, and everything drawn on the map comes to life or is realized in that reality. It‘s amazing; highly recommend the duology!

Not sure who‘s already participated, but I‘ll tag a couple people: @Cadyly @VioletCavalier @beccaeve @PirateJenny

I really enjoyed the concept behind this book. The mythical details included were great and fit in naturally. I wanted a bit more clarity on certain timelines and the way things fit together in the end. That said, I truly enjoyed reading this book and am excited to see where things go in the second book.

Enjoyable young adult fantasy - book 1 so will need to get the sequel. The main character is trying to work on the relationship she has with her father who is trying to manipulate time to prevent/reverse her mother‘s death.

I liked it but I wish there would have been more actual time travelling. For the most part, the entire book took place in one location. Still going to go for book 2 to find out what's really up on that love triangle though. For a full review, check out my blog papertimemachines.blogspot.com

Ga! I still love this book. Time traveling pirates trying to pull a heist in Hawaii is like an A+ premise. I LOVE LOVE LOVEEEEEE these characters, the dramas, the romances, the setting. I really love the historical details thrown in about Hawaii and China which I feel like is pretty under done in YA.

CaramelLunacy That sounds incredibly fun! 6y

Nix and her father live on a magical ship that can take them anywhere in time or place, as long as they have a map and they believe the map will take them there. Nix‘s Dad is an opium addict on a quest that will take him back to Nix‘s mother, before she died in childbirth. Nix doesn‘t know how to feel about this, as she may cease to exist if her father gets his heart‘s desire.

The writing was fine, but time travel books tend to leave me cold.

Still reading. I‘m enjoying it very much so far!

kathleenaflynn Finished! There is always one utterly confounding part in any time travel story, and so it is with TGFE. I read the passage in question at least five times and am still not sure I understand. But overall I loved the inventiveness of this, the lively narrative, the way myth and history work together. Kashmir is A+. 6y
