Frog Music: A Novel | Emma Donoghue
From the author of the worldwide bestseller Room: "Her greatest achievement yet...Emma Donoghue shows more than range with FROG MUSIC--she shows genius." -- Darin Strauss, author of Half a LifeSummer of 1876: San Francisco is in the fierce grip of a record-breaking heat wave and a smallpox epidemic. Through the window of a railroad saloon, a young woman named Jenny Bonnet is shot dead. The survivor, her friend Blanche Beunon, is a French burlesque dancer. Over the next three days, she will risk everything to bring Jenny's murderer to justice--if he doesn't track her down first. The story Blanche struggles to piece together is one of free-love bohemians, desperate paupers, and arrogant millionaires; of jealous men, icy women, and damaged children. It's the secret life of Jenny herself, a notorious character who breaks the law every morning by getting dressed: a charmer as slippery as the frogs she hunts. In thrilling, cinematic style, FROG MUSIC digs up a long-forgotten, never-solved crime. Full of songs that migrated across the world, Emma Donoghue's lyrical tale of love and bloodshed among lowlifes captures the pulse of a boomtown like no other.

Mehso-so

This novel, a historical fiction, takes a look at the figure of Jeanne Bonnet, a frog-catcher, cast here as a woman who cross dresses and, by doing so, lives the life of an outlaw in 1876 San Francisco. The novel is about Bonnet‘s murder but follows Blanche, a danseuse working as a sex worker/burlesque dancer. Donoghue‘s writing choices didn‘t always appeal to me. She writes in 3rd person present, and she alternates between the past/present. ⬇️

psalva The mix between time jumps and the use of present tense got confusing a few times. Donoghue often clarifies what the date is and that took me out of the story sometimes, trying to reorient myself. Also, at times I couldn‘t tell if this was trying to be a mystery. While the fictional solution Donoghue chooses for the murder is interesting, I was more interested in the characters than the who-done-it. ⬇️ 12mo
psalva In the end, however, I found this thought provoking. There will be a lot to discuss in the book club I‘m facilitating in January about this. The historical context of San Francisco in the 1870s, complete with anti-Chinese sentiment, a smallpox epidemic, riots, and bohemian characters is fascinating. And I like Donoghue‘s writing just enough to look for her other work. 12mo
TieDyeDude Sounds like very detailed writing; makes sense that time jumps would muddy the waters a bit. I feel like the troupe of alternative between two different time periods is getting a bit worn out. 12mo
psalva @TieDyeDude For me I guess it depends how it‘s done, but I think I agree. Reading this, I often had a hard time seeing why it was necessary. I think part of it was to create suspense about who committed the murder, but I think just having one flashback and going forward from there would have worked just as well. Too much back and forth just gets jarring most of the time. 12mo

When I ordered my copy of the tagged, I didn‘t realize it was large print. At first, when it arrived, I was a bit annoyed- larger book, more unwieldy. However, now that I‘m halfway through I must say that it is much easier on my eyes. I‘ve always worn glasses, but with my work as a transcriber and using a cell phone, I have noticed my eyes straining to focus after too much screen time. The large print is a relief and has made me less strained. ⬇️

psalva Not sure I‘m at the point where I‘ll seek it out, but I‘m going to be more open to reading large print in the future I think. 12mo

Set in 1876 San Francisco, where smallpox is raging. Based of actual newspaper accounts. We discover the story of the relationship between Jenny Bonnet, and Blanche Beunon and the men who occupy and prey in Blanche‘s life. The story, which begins with Jenny‘s murder, is told through glimpses of what came before and what happened after.

Challenging story, great novel, wonderful author.

This book was up and down for me. Set in San francisco in 1876 during a smallpox epidemic and a horrible heatwave. This is inspired by true events and the author at the end in the Afterword informs us with the details. I enjoyed seeing how much research she did for the book. I just couldn't warm to the main characters Blanche and Jenny. Even though they go through and have gone through lots of very difficult events. #bookcovers

After a slow start, once this got going it didn‘t let go! Notorious frog catcher Jenny, arrested for cross dressing. Blanche, a burlesque dancer, prostitute and reluctant mother. Everything takes place in the short time between them becoming friends and Jenny being shot, covering their friendship, motherhood, exploitation, Chinese immigration and baby farms amidst 1870s San Francisco in the grip of a heatwave and smallpox epidemic. A good read!

Yeah; it‘s best if FROG MUSIC and I part ways. Donoghue roots her story in relationships she‘s slow to fully illuminate, and that made it tough for me to care about Blanche and Jenny as individuals. I wanted a solid emotional hook; what I got was, “This woman‘s been murdered because of reasons that‘re probably tied to some friendships and/or romances that feel really shallow without this backstory I don‘t wanna tell you just yet.” Disappointing.

Rachel.Rencher I'm feeling the same way. Came to the book page to see if I should bail, and this review solidified it 5y

I just couldn't when it got to the baby farm parts. Having a 7 month old, thinking of something like that makes me sick and really just put me off the book. I get it was a real thing, but honestly, how much shock value things can you put in a book before it becomes too much? This much, for me, this much. It's a shame, but I guess I'll just read the wiki about Jenny Bonnet.

I was torn how to rate this. It was interesting enough for me to keep reading, but there were some things I really didn‘t like.

The MC was supposedly independent, earning her own money & even owning the building where she lived, but she was emotionally dependent on her lover, Arthur. Even when he revealed his true colours, she vacillated. As for the sex scenes, let‘s just say, I‘m glad I didn‘t pass this onto my mum to read first 😂

A fascinating character study, murder mystery, and atmospheric historical fiction set in 1870s San Francisco. I appreciated how the main character Blanche is made to be neither necessarily 'likeable' nor 'good'; she's an ambivalent but loving mother, a sex worker, a woman who likes to have lots of sex, and sarcastic. The crux of the plot is the unsolved murder of her cross-dressing frog-catching friend Jenny. Fabulous #audiobook performance!

This historical novel takes place during the broiling summer of 1876 in San Francisco. Based on a true story of the shooting of a cocky, young female cross dresser, Jenny Bonnet, who makes her living selling frog legs to a French restaurant. It is a bawdy tale of the friendship that develops between Jenny and a French prostitute and dancer, Blanche. Filled with the musical lyrics of 30 songs. The music is heard on the audio. #california #nofemmeber

Finished listening to this as I turned in the driveway - so the timing was perfect. Other than that, I had a mixed reaction to the story. I really didn‘t like Blanche very much - although she did redeem herself somewhat in the end. I did like Jenny‘s character and wished there were more of her. None of the male characters were likable which was kind of refreshing.

Took a chance on this one because it was tagged satirical and I needed to fulfill that for a book challenge...minimal satire found, unless I just wasn‘t picking up on it...🤷🏻‍♀️

Usually, if a book doesn‘t grab me at the beginning I‘ll bail on it. Somehow, even with the long as hell chapters that often bores me, this one gripped me in the end.

Overall, nothing special, nothing that will stay with me forever, but entertaining to say the least!

Blanche is a French burlesque dancer living in San Francisco in 1896 when her friend Jenny is murdered in front of her. With the exception of the historical information about the era: the smallpox epidemic, the prejudice against the Chinese and the plight of orphans, I loathed this book. I did not like any of the characters. Too much love of all kinds of sex. So disappointed because I had recently read her other book “The Wonder” and loved it!

I went to San Francisco this weekend with Frog Music for company. This building is 819 Sacramento, the closest address to Blanche's building. It was a great book to provide some sense of the city as I walked around. While Chinatown appears to be a caricature of itself today, it wasn't difficult to imagine the streets in 1876. Donoghue vividly paints the racial tensions and daily struggle of this time.

Spiderfelt If there any Littens who could use two BART passes, we left the city without using up the money we added to them. I'd love to send them along. 7y

A thoroughly researched piece of historical fiction. Donoghue unpacks the murder of Jenny, a real-life event. Jenny, plausibly an early transgendered human being, is shot dead and her friend Blanche, a prostitute and mother plays detective while running for her life.

Definite pick! But I have to say...it's rare that I find myself so conflicted about a main character. Blanche is, in equal parts, disturbing and sympathetic. Several times I considered bailing because she behaved so deplorably. But then Donoghue would redeem her main character and once again, I was hooked. At the same time, not a single male character was likable.

Side note - The narrator on this one was delightful.

Honestly I didn't have high hopes for this book based on the OverDrive description. But I'm enjoying it! This is my first Donoghue. She's adept with descriptive language while creating anticipation and tension.

Mdargusch Cute baby ❤🐶. I bought Frog Music on sale and have had it in my TBR pile for months. I just never hear much about it. I'm glad to hear it's on overdrive- that might be my next audio book. 7y

Bailedbailed

Yeah .... 100 pages in and don't care about characters at all .... I usually love her books but just couldn't do this one.

WanderingBookaneer I didn't bail, but I wish I had. 7y
Booknerd2 It was definitely a weird one. Finished it but wondered why. 7y
laurieluna Got this out the library a couple of years ago and just couldn't get into it. I think I only lasted 50 pages. 7y
shawnmooney I think I bailed long before page 50 so I certainly agree. 7y
