Anne's House of Dreams
Anne's House of Dreams | L. M. Montgomery
Canadian author best known for a series of novels beginning with Anne of Green Gables, published in 1908. Anne of Green Gables was an immediate success. The central character, Anne, an orphaned girl, made Montgomery famous in her lifetime and gave her an international following. The first novel was followed by a series of sequels with Anne as the central character. Montgomery went on to publish 20 novels as well as 500 short stories and poems. Because many of the novels were set on Prince Edward Island, Canada and the Canadian province became literary landmarks. She was awarded Officer of the Order of the British Empire in 1935.

I'm sure all the ships that ever sailed out of Four Winds to their doom could be seen tonight sailing up the harbor with their drowned crews on their decks, if that shrouding fog could suddenly be drawn aside. I feel as if it concealed innumerable mysteries—as if I were surrounded by the wraiths of old generations of Four Winds people peering at me through that gray veil.” #Fog #QuotsyOct19

“There was a certain tang of romance and adventure in the atmosphere of their new home which Anne had never found in Avonlea. There, although she had lived in sight of the sea, it had not entered intimately into her life. In Four Winds it surrounded her and called to her constantly. From every window of her new home she saw some varying aspect of it. Its haunting murmur was ever in her ears.” #Wave #QuotsyJuly19

Oh em geee .... this book. The other books in this series up until now had been a bit of a let down after the first book, especially the one just previous to this (Anne of Windy Poplars) but THIS ONE.. all the feels. Anne is finally “grown up” and married to Gilbert. Together they experience love and loss and friendship and learning. Captain Jim is one of my favorite characters yet. My heart hurts a little after reading this.

bookseller_cate I‘m going to screw up the quote and maybe the character names: I live for moment when Anne and Gilbert arrive and Gilbert introduces Anne to Captain Jim. “It was the first time he had said “my wife” to anyone but Anne, and he nearly burst with the pride of it.” 10mo

Book 5 In the Anne of Green Gables series and I'm now half way through. I didn't enjoy book 4 so much but this was a good come back. Anne is starting married life and there's some really cute characters coming into play. This book is such a sign of the times it was writtern in as anything to do with Anne, Gilbert or pregnancy is not mentioned at all, babies just appear without any reference. I'm looking forward to finishing this series.

Holy moly. This book needs a trigger warning. I‘ve been reading this series aloud with my daughter (who is almost 10, and a rainbow baby after two back to back miscarriages). I actually accidentally carried the book downstairs last night and was curious so I read ahead and am glad I did so I wasn‘t blindsided.. but I couldn‘t get through chapter 19 without many tears. My heart hurts.

1. New Years Eve, at first night. The girls were actually getting along.
2. 200 books. Also attempting #booked2019 and #readingwomenchallenge. I also would like to read a few more classics.
3. Best: got jobs as a librarian. Worst: not sure?
4. I don‘t do resolutions but I am trying to lose some weight that I gained this fall
5. The other two I already started before the new year. Did the first chapter with 9 y/o last night. #humpdaypost

I think this may be my favorite Anne of Green Gables book yet! It‘s the story when Anne and Gilbert are newly married and living in a small, sweet “house of dreams” that overlooks the sea. I cried a couple times and loved the story!

I liked this book but I found Anne wasn‘t as vibrant as she was in the previous books. I have a more detailed review on Goodreads. What made this book a 4 star book were Captain Jim and Leslie. I do like Montgomery‘s writing enough to recommend it.

It‘s been forever since I read this series and I have to say I was actually let down by Anne‘s House of Dreams. The characters weren‘t very likeable. Anne wasn‘t even likeable in this one. Montgomery‘s writing is still phenomenal though.

My favorite since the first in the series. I like that Anne is growing up and changing, but she is still Anne. I thinks she is trying to figure out how to be a wife, and then a mother. She experiences tremendous loss that changes her profoundly. I also like the side characters in this volume. I miss Diana and Marilla and all of Avonlea, but these characters have their charms as well.

callielafleur This may be my bad memory, but is this the one where she's almost entirely referred to as Mrs Blythe? I can't remember if it was this one or a later one, just that it made me sad that her Anne-ness was going away. 2y
Krisjericho @callielafleur I‘m reading Anne of Ingleside right now, and so far, it refers to her either as a mother or a wife at almost all times. In House of Dreams, there are a couple characters that refer to her as Mrs. Blythe, but others still refer to her as Anne. (edited) 2y
callielafleur @Krisjericho Ah, that must be the one I was thinking of! 2y

Another great book in the series! I had a couple of issues with sexism in this book (see last post I made about it), but they felt appropriate for the time period in a way that didn't alter my opinions of the characters. Halfway through the series now!

Meg11726 As a child I visited Green Gables every summer as we only lived a few hours away from the island. This was also the very first series of books I've ever owned. And they are well loved. To this day I still visit Green Gables but with my niece and nephew who enjoy the story of Anne as much as I did. Times have changed but back then that was reality for the sexism. Hard for us maybe to comprehend it at times. 3y
readinginthedark @Meg11726 How fun! I'm really enjoying the series, and you're right. Thankfully, there wasn't anything really serious that became a sexist issue, and I found the discussion of women trying to get the vote interesting. This one was just more obvious than the others; I guess because Anne is getting older. 3y

Making a lot of progress! But for the first time, I'm a bit disappointed in Montgomery. Captain Jim doesn't think that women can be "real writers." Anne doesn't argue with him but supposedly disagrees. And yet, Anne seems to back-up Captain Jim's opinion, since she doesn't feel capable of writing his life book and finds a man to do it.

gossamerchild There are many dated aspects to these books. Oddly, I feel like the older Anne gets, the farther away she gets from any belief in equality between the sexes. I also still love these books, but they are problematic 🤔. 3y
readinginthedark @gossamerchild I agree! When she was in college and teaching, she seemed to have a stronger sense of women's rights. 😕 But it's timely. 3y

In this book, Anne gives birth to a little girl, Joyce, whom they call #Joy. She dies shortly after birth. That always stuck with me, and I've thought of it often, especially in the years since I gave birth to my own stillborn son, Luke. It actually helped me to know Anne Shirley had survived what I was going through. Books are amazing. My son would have been 6 on Christmas Eve. ❤️ #12daysofxmasphoto
