Melody is the smartest girl in school, but nobody knows it. Most people, including her teachers and doctors, believe she is cognitively challenged and have placed her in special ed. If she could only share what she thinks and knows, but Melody cannot speak, walk or write. Readers will be moved by her drive and perseverance.

This book follows a girl named Melody who was born with cerebral palsy and cannot walk or talk and just struggles with going through school and not feeling as if she belongs because no one truly knows her. Everyone believes that because she cannot talk she has no thoughts, but that is the complete opposite- she is thinking up a storm! Once she finally gets her “talker“ she is able to finally communicate.

As a special education teacher I appreciate how this YA novel brings attention to how we treat people with disabilities. Although I didn't always feel the author did a great job of portraying 10 and 11 year olds, she brought light to how often neurodiverse people can be underestimated. I also liked how she highlighted how neurotypical people tend to talk about neurodiverse students like they're not even there--a major problem!!

Sharon M. Draper‘s New York Times best seller book, Out of my Mind, is truly unbelievable. The RF story of Melody is one of my most favorites since I was in elementary school. Out of my Mind is about a girl who gets the technology to finally be able to say what she has been thinking this whole time! This book would be great for LC, and can engage students to think in ways they haven‘t before. #ucflae3414sp21

Adodd1 https://onlemonlane.com/teaching/how-to-set-up-literature-circles-in-the-upper-g... this link is very helpful on how to set up your literature circles, as well as guide the students during. The UDL best fit for this would be 6.2 since this would give students guidance, but also the responsibility to plan for their assignment and reading. The EL support that would be best would be 6 and 29, allowing them to be independent with this. 4y

Wow! This book is amazing and teaches such valuable lessons for all-- we all have our setbacks and aspects of ourselves that aren't perfect. It's so important to see that people with disabilities may have one aspect of their body that does not work properly, but that does not mean they are not intellectual beings with wants, thoughts, and needs like all individuals. Draper points out that while life might not always be fair, it is not all bad!

Wow! A tear-Jerking RF novel, Out of My Mind by Sharon Draper, revolves around an 11 year old girl by the name of Melody. Melody is not your average girl in grade 5. She has a disability. Her disability is called Cerebral Palsy, and this causes Melody to have muscle spasms, lack of control of her body and the inability to walk. #UCFLAE3414SU20

Ameyer32 Worst of all for Melody-she can not talk! She is trapped in her mind and has so much to say but no way to say it. Melody has two desires; she wants to tell her parents how much she loves them, and she wants to fit in with her classmates at school. Many awards have been won but the most notable awards: New York Times bestseller for over three years and won Sunshine State Young Reader's Award in both the middle school and elementary categories. 4y
Ameyer32 This book would be great for LC where the class can delve deeper into the story or a great RA for after lunch or just before lunch.

I would support decoding of text, UDL 2.3 with an audio book for support while reading the text. I would also use ESOL strategy number 10, teach think-pair-share strategies.

This RF book pacts a powerful punch. I would use this book for IR and also LC. The author is a two-time Coretta Scott King Award Winner, and this book will warm the hearts of students and adults.
#ucflae3414su20

gpraytor Using UDL Principle 3.3: guide information processing and visualization, this is key because this book may become overwhelming to some student's during the darker parts of the book. Out of My Mind is a RF by Sharon M. Draper. It won multiple awards, some being Bank Street Best Book of the Year, Maud Hart Lovelace Book Award, and ILA Young Adult Choices. It‘s such an inspirational story about a 5th grade student named Melody who has cerebral palsy. She can‘t walk or talk but she‘s one of the most brilliant kids in her class. Everyone looks at her different because she‘s “disabled” except for her family, Mrs. V, and Catherine.

alexblanco She decided to try out for the Whiz Kids competition and everyone doubted her, even Mr. Dimming. She ended up getting the highest score and made the team. Once they got to nationals and had to fly to D.C., she was left behind and couldn‘t compete. Ironically, they won 9th place. They tried to give Melody the trophy but she laughed and said she didn‘t want it and that they deserve it. 5y
alexblanco A teaching strategy I would use in my class for this book would be LC. I think that would be a good way for students to connect with the book and their peers. #ucflae3414f19
One UDL strategy I would use would be to highlight patterns, critical features, big ideas, and relationships. I think this would work best because it‘s a upcoming topic and a big thing that‘s getting more noticed so it‘s important that to highlight it.

alexblanco One ESOL strategy I would use would be to promote cooperation (small groups). I think with reading a novel, it is important to incorporate small groups. It can benefit the readers and the other peers. 5y

alexblanco A standard I would use for this book would be “determine a central idea of a text and how it is conveyed through particular details; provide a summary of the text distinct from personal opinions or judgement.” https://www.cpalms.org/Public/PreviewStandard/Preview/5990

ccipriati I like the UDL strategies that you picked out 5y
Lrobertson The book that made me cry! This book is great for your UDL! Definitely a book to get students talking and seeing that just because someone looks different or may not be able to speak does not mean they are all that different from us! 5y
DrSpalding So many peers enjoy your posts! Nice work Ms. Blanco. I believe all teachers should read this particular title! 5y

Pickpick

Out of my mind is a great novel if you enjoy realistic fiction. It is written by Sharon M Draper and has won the Coretta Scott King award. This story gives you great insight into the mind of a child who cannot speak, write, or walk. It would be a great story to use as a LC or even IR. BRaulerson first person narration.

The ESOL strategy I would use would be 6. Continually monitor students‘ comprehension. This story is so much of a relatable and real life story, students should be able to connect to the story, while using the UDL strategy: highlight patterns, critical features, big ideas, and relationships. Focusing on those main ideas and relationships while monitoring their comprehension with the story will be very beneficial.

DrSpalding I believe all teachers should read this book! You can use it as a literature circle option but obviously as a read aloud or independent read as well. Your # is incorrect here. 5y
