From the national bestselling author of Alice comes a familiar story with a dark hook--a tale about Peter Pan and the friend who became his nemesis, a nemesis who may not be the blackhearted villain Peter says he is... There is one version of my story that everyone knows. And then there is the truth. This is how it happened. How I went from being Peter Pan's first--and favorite--lost boy to his greatest enemy. Peter brought me to his island because there were no rules and no grownups to make us mind. He brought boys from the Other Place to join in the fun, but Peter's idea of fun is sharper than a pirate's sword. Because it's never been all fun and games on the island. Our neighbors are pirates and monsters. Our toys are knife and stick and rock--the kinds of playthings that bite. Peter promised we would all be young and happy forever. Peter lies.

1. Done! What if Captain Hook was Peter Pan‘s very first lost boy?
2. The answer would usually be no, but I sleep on a pull-out couch. I have to fold it back every morning!
3. Yes. I agree with everyone who called it a breakfast food, haha.
4. 8 US. Can sometimes be 7 1/2 or 8 1/2.

This book was exactly what I needed right now - a familiar story with a twist, fast, fun, and exciting. I was never a fan of Peter Pan, so I loved seeing him as the bad guy in this. It was a bit predictable, but I was rooting for Jamie and that kept me going.

An interesting take on Peter Pan. Here we get Captain Hooks origin story. I like that Peter is the villain in the story. The book was ok but not anything special for me. The story moves along at a steady pace towards the inevitable conclusion.

I thought the entire thing was dark and unnerving and delightfully wicked which was exactly what I needed. Christina Henry weaves a completely believable story about boys that desperately hope to never grow up, pirates that aren't really the evil doers everyone believes, and a 'hero' that isn't what he seems.

A delightful prequel to Peter Pan told from the view of Lost Boy Jamie, who will grow up to be Captain Hook. It's dark and disturbing and sad but also true to the source and adds a littler more magic to the Neverland story.

How unexpected!

I read Peter Pan last year, and it‘s a lot darker than I thought. Christina Henry clearly decided she could go darker. This is a disturbing, bloody little book, but it‘s well-written and, oddly enough, very original. Loved it!

This one is between a pick and a so-so for me. Essentially the origin story of Captain Hook that you‘ve never heard and Peter Pan portrayed in a way you‘ve never seen. While I didn‘t find it quite as horrific as others (not sure what that says about me lol) and the writing was simplistic at times, I found myself caring about the characters and eager to find out how Captain Hook went from Peter‘s original lost boy to his sworn enemy for eternity

BookwormAHN I felt parts of the story were rather rushed and would have liked to have heard more about Jamie becoming a pirate. 10mo
RvnclawWhovian @BookwormAHN totally agree. How did he gain the pirate‘s trust after what Peter did and become their leader? 10mo
HotTeaGoodBooks I can‘t get past Stars (Wendy Darling #1) by Colleen Oakes enough to read another book with Pan in it. She turned him into such a textbook classic abuser when she really could have used the platform to empower her female lead. But I digress. That book left me with quite a soapbox, lol. Maybe I can get past it enough to give the characters another chance at some point. 10mo
RvnclawWhovian @Denita yea Pan isn‘t portrayed well in this one either. You could make the argument that at best, he‘s manipulative and at worst he‘s mentally abusive. I didn‘t find it too disturbing to continue reading but personally I‘m able to read a lot of “disturbing” stuff without feeling too affected so maybe read with caution if you‘re easily triggered by reading stuff like that 10mo

This book was entertaining. There were some parts that felt rushed but mostly I enjoyed the story of how Jamie went from lost boy to Captain Hook. Also Peter Pan as a little sociopath that I can definitely see. I've never trusted the boy who refused to grow up 😼

What if Peter Pan was really a narssistic, evil little monster? Really, it doesn't seem like that great of a stretch to me. Peter Pan always creeped me out and I like fairy tale re-tellings, so I thought I'd like this book. I found it a little too dark and depressing for my mood, like a recreation of Lord of the Flies only not as well written. I kept trying to get to the end and I always fell asleep. The narrator was as dry as Ben Stein.

This was really close to a pick for me! I loved how everything tied together and that by the end of the book, the characters and location were exactly the same as they were in the classic Pan. Jamie was also beautifully flawed—great character to read!
BUT why did Sal have to be such a plot device with a tragic ending? Really just there to push Jamie over the edge into not loving Peter anymore and to help him grow up. She deserved better!!

To follow the Worst Read post... I really cannot pick a best. I read so many phenomenal books this year! Harry Potter Series, The Hobbit, The Help, The Time Travelers Wife, A Man Called Ove, Head Full of Ghosts... the list goes on. But to continue with my Peter Pan theme, I will say Lost Boy was in my top favorites. I adored Jamie 🧡🧡 So much that I am drawing a tattoo of him for myself.

Follow Jamie, the first boy Peter ever brought to the island, as he begins to doubt their friendship and to acknowledge that the wonderful life promised to the boys is only an illusion. Peter would tell you that he is a villain. But Peter lies.

Christina Henry gives a dark twist to the tale of Peter Pan in this fascinating retelling. The descriptions are detailed and well written, the dialogues are convincing, and the story itself is chilling.

THIS BOOK ♥️♥️♥️ Easily one of my favorite reads of the whole year! Due to the character limit, I‘ll list some reasons why it stood out to me:
1️⃣ CHARACTERS
2️⃣ REALISM
3️⃣ PSYCHOLOGY
4️⃣ CONNECTION TO ORIGINAL STORY
5️⃣ THEMES

Since Litsy has a character limit, I‘ll expand on each of the points in the comments I may write an in-depth review on Goodreads. In general, ‘Hook‘ will now be ‘Jamie‘ in the way the ‘Wicked Witch‘ is now ‘Elphaba‘.

Jess_Franzino 1️⃣ CHARACTERS - Jamie (Hook), is one of the best developed & multi-faceted characters I‘ve read in a long time. It‘s clear just how much work the writer put into creating him. He‘s good-hearted, yet deeply flawed & imperfect. He grows a lot (both literally & figuratively). Peter is TERRIFYING. Manipulative, sadistic, selfish, & a textbook sociopath. The scary thing about Peter, is that people like him actually exist. 1y
Jess_Franzino 2️⃣REALISM- Yes, it‘s set in Neverland, but this book is about the characters rather than the setting. Due to the characters being so human and their horrors so brutal, I actually forgot it was set in this idealized “Neverland” until Peter started flying. It really drives home how this ‘Neverland‘ we know is a fairytale created by Peter himself. 1y
Jess_Franzino 3️⃣ PSYCHOLOGY- In short, it perfectly illustrates the mindset & lies people believe when they‘re seduced into following & justifying an abusive sociopath. Also, how the scars stay with people forever. It gives a whole new meaning to the song “Following The Leader” (which played in my mind in a very dark way while reading it). 1y
See All 8 Comments
Jess_Franzino 4️⃣ CONNECTION TO ORIGINAL STORY- Writer wove in a lot of call-backs to many different versions of the Peter Pan tale, from kids playing “follow the leader”, to reference to shadows, to finally answering questions as to how Peter Pan stays young, why ‘Hook‘ fears crocodiles, & flying. 1y
Jess_Franzino 5️⃣ THEMES - What is the difference between a “boy” & a “man”, and what makes us truly “grow up”? Is a villain simply a ‘villain‘ because the ‘hero‘ built him up to be so? What is the difference between a “fairytale” & a “lie”? 1y
monalyisha I used to be obsessed with Peter Pan as a kid! (I thought he was real & would wait for him by my window. Then, my aunt told me he came to her house *every* night; I stayed up all night waiting & he never came). I only read the book recently. I can‘t say I loved it. It‘s hard not to look at it with modern eyes & refrain from judging the racist/sexist components. I‘m still super-interested in the story, though! I‘ll have to add this one to my TBR. 1y
monalyisha Also, when we graduated from high school & I went away for college, my bff Matt gave me a thimble with a tiny scroll inside that read, “Guess it‘s time for us to grow up.” 😭 1y
monalyisha I want to write a retelling where Nana secretly follows Wendy to Neverland & teaches that bitch to bite.🌸✊🏻 Then, Wendy, Tink & Tiger Lily lure a bunch of little girls to the island & start a rival girl group. 1y

⭐⭐⭐ This is a retelling of Captain Hook who once was a boy named Jamie who loved a boy named Peter. They were the best of friends until Peter betrayed him.

Warning if you loved Peter Pan as a kid, he is a major douche-canoe and you will hate him. You've been warned.
