Lost Boy
Lost Boy | Christina Henry
From the national bestselling author of Alice comes a familiar story with a dark hook--a tale about Peter Pan and the friend who became his nemesis, a nemesis who may not be the blackhearted villain Peter says he is... There is one version of my story that everyone knows. And then there is the truth. This is how it happened. How I went from being Peter Pan's first--and favorite--lost boy to his greatest enemy. Peter brought me to his island because there were no rules and no grownups to make us mind. He brought boys from the Other Place to join in the fun, but Peter's idea of fun is sharper than a pirate's sword. Because it's never been all fun and games on the island. Our neighbors are pirates and monsters. Our toys are knife and stick and rock--the kinds of playthings that bite. Peter promised we would all be young and happy forever. Peter lies.

This is Captain Hook‘s origin story. He begins as a boy infatuated by Peter and content to forever be a child, until Peter and the island turn him into someone full of anger and hurt. He is the protector of the other boys, a surrogate father, and it is Peter‘s malice and spite toward the other other boys that eventually causes Jamie (Hook) to see the truth and break the spell of eternal boyhood.

I'm on the last book of my March #bookspinbingo board. It's a toss up whether I'll finish under the wire lol

TieDyeDude What did you think of it? 11mo
BookishMadHatter @TieDyeDude I really liked it. It took getting through a little at the beginning to really grab my attention but once it did, I was hooked. Having never read the original I have no opinions on comparison, but I enjoyed the heck out of all the darkness in this one 11mo
TieDyeDude Nice. I have read the original several times, and the darkness in this one actually turned me off. Kinda like the slasher Winnie the Pooh movie, which I'll never see, I don't need dark, twisted versions of my childhood favorites, but that aside, they did a decent job with Lost Boys. Glad you liked it! 11mo
BookishMadHatter @TieDyeDude I understand where you're coming from. I have no intention of ever seeing the slasher Winnie the Pooh either. Some things need to be left as is 11mo

I dunno, I guess I wasn't expecting this to go quite so dark. I would have liked something a little lighter. The big reveal about Hook's past was a little much, turning Peter irredeemable. I don't remember the original having any real dark moments, so, while this gritty reboot may be appropriate for other fairy tales, it just doesn't fit with Pan. Fun idea, decently written, but not what I was looking for, nor what I wanted.

StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego That's too bad, I liked this one. However, I was definitely expecting it to be dark 1y

The premise was promising, but the execution was spotty. An origin story in which Hook was the original Lost Boy? Sounds wicked awesome! My issues stemmed largely from the fact the author makes Peter Pan a complete sociopath from the start. There is no subtlety here, no complex, interesting characters. You‘re just served a huge bowl of “PETER IS SO EVIL” the entire time. Worst, it wasn‘t really any fun (now I sound like Peter 😂).

wanderinglynn I agree with your review. I didn‘t care for this book either. 1y
TheAromaofBooks Always sad when a book doesn't live up to an intriguing premise! 1y

This was a fun twist on the story of Peter pan, told through the lens of The boy who would become Captain Hook. Some repetitive parts of the rules.of the story made this go from a 5 to a 4 Stars for me. But overall an enjoyable read.

That was an incredible story! I've never been a Peter Pan fan but this really sealed the deal! Peter takes boys to his island for fun and so they won't grow up but who could ever imagine that his reasons are more sinister than plain old fun? Jamie, who was Peter's first playmate, begins seeing things as they really are and loses some of the magic but what does that mean in the long run?

I understand why some persons don‘t like this book, is a slow reading pace and the Peter in this story is way different from the original story. But this is a C. Henry retelling which means it‘s dark and gory. Love it! I can‘t say much, it has sad parts, did I say is gory? I like the twist here. My best retelling by this author followed by Alice, for now. But it is slow. I have been reading slow reading pace books, bc I‘m a slow reader?🧐🤣3.9/4⭐️

I have always been obsessed with any story involving Peter Pan, so this book was an amazing add to my collection of Pan related books. I loved the perspective of Jamie (Hook) and how you get to see his perspective of Neverland and how he became what everyone knows him to be. A quick read for a nice morning, and a bittersweet ending that I would enjoy reading again.

At first I wasn't sure how I feel about the book - there are some changes to the beloved story about Peter Pan and at first that didn't sit right with me (and, to be honest, I still don't agree with them). But I wasn't able to put the book down and while I may have an issue with it here or there it still means I was drawn in and entertained and that's what reading is all about.

I loved this tale so much. It made my heart ache a little. While I can say that it does not compare to Brom‘s The Child Thief, I will also say that we shouldn‘t really be comparing the two. Each book tugged at different heart strings for me and both support my life long distaste for the boy named Pan. I can‘t believe it took me so long to finally read this one. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Peter Pan, never really say well with me. He felt more selfish and uncaring child. More the characteristics of a gillian then a hero. Henry's re-telling is transformative. Peter is not only a villian, but a predator and violent persona.

The origins of Captain Hook is beyond compelling in Christina Henry's imagination.

Nute There is definitely a more darker side to Peter Pan‘s character and his story than the Disney depiction. 3y

4/5 stars
I‘ve never been a fan of Peter Pan as a character; however, I adore Captain Hook. I always enjoy retellings where the main character is Hook and Peter Pan is evil and Lost Boy delivered a nice anti-Peter Pan story. It‘s a quick read and while I wouldn‘t say there is too much of a plot, it is still enjoyable.

1 & 2. Lost Boy by Christina Henry. It‘s not the scariest book ever, but the tension keeps building up until you feel dread yourself. Also, The Black Cat by Edgar Allan Poe still gives me chills when I think about it!

#unpopularopinion as I was disappointed in Lost Boy. After the first couple of chapters, I found the story slow until part III. Even then, I found thought it might delve into the hinted darker themes of the original, like responsibility v. freedom, childhood v. adulthood, heroes v. villains. I thought Wicked did a much better job at this. But I found this story focused on entertainment with a smidgen of a Lord of the Flies vibe. 2.75 ⭐️

reading_rainbow I just got Wicked it‘s on my September TBR! 4y
wanderinglynn @reading_rainbow I actually like the stage musical adaptation better than the book. But it‘s still a good story, asking us to consider what is “wicked”. 4y

TieDyeDude Yeah, I didn't love this. The original was too nice for a retelling this dark. I think a retelling of Alice would make more sense with the weirder, darker source material, but Lost Boy went a bit far IMO. 1y

I almost gave up on this one. I love my Peter Pan stories and I was so looking forward to this one, but everything about this novel screamed first draft. The author repeated sentences or reuses similar ideas. How many times do I have to be told that Peter is evil? How many times about how much he covets James red cloak? Brom‘s Child Thief is superior to this novel in every way and I encourage all to read his work over this book.

a fast but enjoyable read! this reinterpretation of Peter Pan acts as a sympathetic origin story for Captain Hook while painting Peter as a sociopathic antagonist. not as brutal as the cover implies but still very fun. I do wish Henry had taken more time to slow down and explore more of the setting since I wanted to see what other aspects she'd rewrite in this dark fantasy book.

I really enjoyed this retelling of Peter‘s story. Peter was always kind of a dick in my eyes so this didn‘t really ruin my childhood or anything lol. Jamie‘s back story really had me in tears there at the end even if I did see it coming. The fault I have is how repetitive Jamie‘s thoughts toward Peter are.
