Literary London
Literary London | Sam Jordison, Eloise Millar
15 posts | 2 read | 78 to read
One of the world's greatest literary cities, London has streets full of stories and buildings steeped in history. The biggest and most beloved names in English literature have all been here, and you can still see or visit their stomping grounds and favorite places. Follow Oscar Wilde from the literary salons to Clapham Junction; roam with Julian McClaren Ross through Fitzrovia, dropping in for a pint or three with Dylan Thomas at the Bricklayers' Arms; muse darkly over the Thames with Spencer, Eliot, and Conrad; and watch aghast as Lord Byron terrorizes his publisher on Albermarle Street. Moving through time and genre, from Spencer and Shakespeare to Amis and Barnes, from tragedy and romance to chick-lit and science fiction, Literary London is a snappy and informative guide, showing just why--as another famous local writer put it--he who is tired of London is tired of life.

Gertrude is still in the puppy stage, which means chewing. Unfortunately that included two of my books. 😭 Imaginary London looked #asgoodasnew when I put the dust jacket back on, but Literary London looks a bit worse for the wear. 😬 At least it‘s still readable! #abbainaugust

TrishB 😔 6y
MaGoose 😥 Glad it's still readable. 6y
Zelma What a bad puppy! My final Harry Potter hardcover had the same fate; fortunately it was still readable or would have lost it. 🙄 6y

Reviewsbylola This was a month or two ago, which is why I‘ve been so nervous about the couches. 😅 So far, so good! @Mdargusch 6y
minkyb But puppies provide such unconditional love! Ours has a thing for my husband‘s sick and he did chew my tennis racquet. 6y

LibrarianRyan 👍🏻🤓 very interesting. 7y
Libby1 Dickens writes more about misers in Our Mutual Friend. I think he had a bit of a fascination with them! 7y

LeahBergen @drokka See? You let this book slip out of your hands when you bought it for me. And I'm so glad! 😘 7y
drokka I know, right? Good news though, I have it on good authority that there is more than one copy running amok in the world. I hope you're enjoying it. It really does look like a great kind of reference book. 7y
TrishB @drokka me neither - that's what was so cool! He really was mean wasn't he! 7y
