Sparkling Cyanide | Agatha Christie
90 posts | 101 read | 61 to read
Agatha Christie's genius for detective fiction is unparalleled. Her worldwide popularity is phenomenal, her characters engaging, her plots spellbinding. No one knows the human heart-orthe dark passions that can stop it-better than Agatha Christie. She is truly the one and only Queen of Crime. Sparlkling Cyanide "Rosemary that's for remembrance" Six people are thinking about beautiful Rosemary Barton, who died nearly a year before. There's the loving sister, the long-suffering husband, the devoted secretary, the lovers, and the betrayed wife. None of them can forget Rosemary But did one of them murder her?

Rosemary died a year ago but her husband George thinks she was murdered and it wasn't a suicide. There are 6 people thinking about Rosemary for different reasons and one of them could be the murderer.

I'm a huge Agatha fan but I didn't particularly enjoy this one. I am yet to understand what exactly was the issue, but it is what it is. To better murders and better books hopefully.

I am posting one book per day from my extensive, and ever growing, TBR shelves. No description or reason for wanting to read the book, some I've had so long I'm not sure why I got them in the first place.

I of course had to pick up an Agatha Christie for the spooky season. This one was a Colonel Race book, which I didn‘t realize at the start. It was an interesting mystery but this one I thought I may had figured out or just thought it was obvious after the bad guy was revealed. But I‘ll always love Agatha.

Iris Marle was thinking about her sister, Rosemary.
For nearly a year she had deliberately tried to put the thought of Rosemary away from her. She hadn‘t wanted to remember.

I like how Christie uses the viewpoints of different characters to tell this story. The solution is a smidgen of a leap, and I would have to read back through to be sure, but I think Christie misleads the reader a little more blatantly than I think is quite fair, but I enjoyed the characters and the story overall.

I really liked this one. It started out different than the other Christies I‘ve read (mostly Poirot) and I wasn‘t sure where it was going at first. As always, I didn‘t guess who did it correctly 😂

I didn't like how this started but by the end of the first part I thought it was an interesting way to introduce the characters of the story.

Guess it's time to start collecting Christie books (minus the spy/thrillers that I haven't liked).

Ruthiella I don‘t like her spy stories much either. But I love the Poirot and Miss Marple books. 1y
CoveredInRust @Ruthiella Yes! This is one of the Race books and it's very good so far. I made a list and had to look into some reviews to find which ones were out of her normal mystery works. 1y

1. Going by original publication date, The Odyssey was written c 8th century bc & pub. in English 1614. If it‘s Edition pub. I have a 1st edition of the tagged book from 1945 that I‘ve read.
2. The more the better! DCI Banks has 28 bks(RIP Peter Robinson)Inspector Lynley series by Elizabeth George has 21, Wheel Of Time has 14 plus prequels. All faves.
3. DCI Banks for sure, Becky Chamber‘s Wayfarers, TOG by Maas are a few.

My Agatha Christie read for April and the theme was poison. Rosemary Barton dies, and everyone thinks suicide. But her husband begins to think otherwise and recreates the evening with the same guests to see if the truth will come out. It was a good read.

A year to the day after his wife died of cyanide poisoning at a restaurant, George Barton, who now believes it was not suicide, recreates the same meal with the same guests in an attempt to flush out the murderer. What could go wrong?

I did of course make the elementary mistake of thinking it was the obvious suspect.

A very engaging read! This is a non-Poirot/Marple book but full of suspects and interesting twists, as you would expect. A death ruled suicide, letters suggesting it was murder, a very small suspect pool, a trap set, a trap foiled. A successful solution. Ah.
Well done, Agatha.

A solid #pantone2022 read - and the color name #innuendo is wonderfully fitting 😉

This one was told in a different format than other Christie novels. Starts out with people‘s remembrances of Rosemary and the day she died. Then, it gets into a mystery of whether she died by suicide or maybe murder. Hints are dropped about who, but it‘s harder to figure out how events happened. Colonel Race is investigating.

I read the first half of this one on a plane ride and it was a fun, quick murder mystery to get pulled into. I lost momentum after being home for a few days. The ending was still satisfying, but it‘s not one of my new favorite Christie novels. It‘s a slow burn and there was only one twist I really loved. Still a good easy travel read.

"6 people sit down to dinner, 1 with death"

Sparkling Cyanide is a classic whodunnit that is quick, entertaining, puzzling and enjoyable! With a small suspect pool of just 5 people, the in-depth characterisation of their psyche, making up the first part of the novel, was very cleverly constructed. Everybody had motive & the means to do it, so it is rather refreshing that the story mostly focussed on "who did it" than the usual "why".

Finished my #doublespin pick for November yesterday just under the wire . This was a solid mystery although it took me a couple chapters to get into it. I had somewhat correct suspicions on the killer. I had to remind myself that this one was written by a woman since there were some really sexist comments throughout. Since this is also my #LMPBC pick I won‘t go into more detail here.

Each day for seven days you post a book that made an impression on you.

Today‘s book is the very first Dame Agatha I read when I was 7yrs old. My Auntie Lilla had a shelf full of old editions that she let me borrow to read. Gave me a lifelong love of crime fiction which I still enjoy very much. Especially Dame Agatha! #christiecrimeclub #sleuthsoflitsy

An early Agatha Christie I picked up at a second-hand store. It‘s not her best - lacks dramatic tension - but I love the clever plotting & how she draws the characters - you can picture them perfectly. It‘s somewhat dated but the marriage dynamics & domestic quandaries still ring true (as do some of the sexist attitudes unfortunately). Firmly set in London, I enjoyed the cosy old-fashioned atmosphere.
