The Monsters of Templeton
The Monsters of Templeton | Lauren Groff
Willie Cooper arrives on the doorstep of her ancestral home in Templeton, New York in the wake of a disastrous affair with her much older, married archaeology professor. That same day, the discovery of a prehistoric monster in the lake brings a media frenzy to the quiet, picture-perfect town her ancestors founded. Smarting from a broken heart, Willie then learns that the story her mother had always told her about her father has all been a lie. He wasn't the one-night stand Vi had led her to imagine, but someone else entirely. As Willie puts her archaeological skills to work digging for the truth about her lineage, a chorus of voices from the town's past rise up around her to tell their sides of the story. Dark secrets come to light, past and present blur, old mysteries are finally put to rest, and the surprising truth about more than one monster is revealed.

My sister loved this book. But I just don‘t connect with any of the characters. I‘ve been reading this on and off for over a month. That‘s enough. I‘m done.

This book defies description- there are elements of HF, magical realism, genealogical mystery, among other genres. The history of the town (a fictionalized version of Cooperstown NY) was very interesting but I didn't like the contemporary characters, esp the MC, so I sometimes found this hard going. But I suspect I'll be thinking of elements of this book for some time so I'm calling it a pick.

Here are the other books I grabbed today at the thrift store! Anyone read any of these? Dear Emma is a modern retelling inspired by Jane Austen. Murder at the 42nd street library has detectives, murder mystery, librarians, books, and a library. Who could ask for any more? 😂 Was happy to add another Beatriz Williams to my collection as always and another Sue Grafton as I‘m trying to collect them all. And monster in Templeton got great reviews!

peggyriley Monsters of Templeton is ace. 6y

How do you feel about novels that include elements like photography and “found documents” (diaries, letters, family trees, etc.)? Do you think it generally adds to or distracts from the story?

Suet624 Love it. 6y

batsy Depends on the novel & how the writer incorporates it but in my experience I've always enjoyed those elements :) 6y

Lauren Groff from the 24 May NYT "By The Book" column.
I think is true, for the most part. Except when it comes to The Davinci Code, which I will always, always, always hate for its "style" and cliffhanger format. ?

CindyMyLifeIsLit I agree, for the most part. I usually attribute my low rating of a popular book to personal preference, but sometimes. . . sometimes, it‘s NOT me, it‘s them! There are popular books that occasionally provide tangible proof of their inherent unworthiness, such as bad writing or undeniable plot holes. Then I don‘t feel the need to apologize for my dislike of them! 😁 7y
Bookwomble I'd certainly agree with Groff on this one. It took me five abortive attempts at "Crime and Punishment" before I was swept away by Dostoyevsky's genius. 7y
Aimeesue @CindyMyLifeIsLit @Bookwomble I see it most clearly when I reread books I like - The Remains of the Day, The French Lieutenant's Woman - where I can then kind of see how the magic happens. Some books *are* just terrible books, and there's no getting around it, but if it's a classic, or has great professional reviews and I still hate it, I gotta believe it's me. (edited) 7y
CindyMyLifeIsLit @Aimeesue For classics, definitely! I always assume it‘s me for classics. I think of my teenage students, turning their noses up and condemning Fahrenheit 451 or To Kill a Mockingbird as “boring” or “stupid,” and I tell them that this book has been lauded long before they were born and will continue to be long after they‘re gone. I hated Ulysses, but that‘s on me!! 7y

“I didn‘t see it until I entered the house that night and went up to my room. But there it was, framed in the twilight in a window, surreal and vivid: the monster in midair, suspended by the crane. It‘s neck was thrust backward so that it‘s head tilted toward the east mountains, it‘s arms and legs were dropping toward the ground, the great, delicate tail one long comma, looking tattered and unlovely out of the water.”

Just finished Lauren Groff‘s first novel this morning. While I enjoyed Fates and Furies more, this was definitely a delightful family drama with plenty of humor and just the right dose of magical realism. It definitely kept me turning the pages.

#TBRtemptation post 10! Spanning 200 years, it's a ghost story & historical novel. In the wake of an affair with her professor, Willie returns home to Templeton, NY, and her hippie-turned-Baptist mom, Vi. The discovery of a 50-foot monster's carcass in the lake prevents peace. Vi explains that Willie's father was not some random guy, but someone from town. She puts her archaeology skills to use to learn about him. #blameLitsy #blameMrBook 😎

An amazing first novel filled with dazzling words and glimmers of truth. I can't believe it took me so long to read it as I have loved Groff's subsequent books and short stories. The author interview excerpt above floors me. I cannot imagine her process but I respect her dedication to both story and craft. A fine summer read with a curious and charming cast of characters including a jogging troupe and a prehistoric lake creature.
