These were the books chosen by #LitsyATXReadersSociety for our November topic, “Something you‘ve been meaning to read.” Quite a varied range!

Next meeting is Dec 21st, topic is Banned or Controversial books. We‘re going to meet in the cafe and do a cookie swap. I‘ll post more about it in Slack.

Lcsmcat That cover on the Kafka! 6d
Soubhiville @lcsmcat right? That‘s why @Eyelit chose it. The font is really cool. 6d

This is a short book, just 50 odd pages and a free download as it is now in the public domain so it felt like a no brainer to get myself a copy and will away an hour.

Now this book is a maze! Leaves you with more questions than answers. Every reader would decipher this Kafka aka Mr Riddler's Masterpiece in their own ways. Felt like a story going in mind of a person comatosed one sudden day metaphored as the protagonist waking up as a giant bug.It displays feelings of isolation and inferiority. Also how sometimes in ager we forget conditions or situations others maybe in and act against them & then later regret.

Family man Gregor wakes up a bug, and his primary concern is being late to work (relatable!), but he soon realizes he has much more worrisome issues.

As much as I don‘t like how his family treated him after the “metamorphosis”, I couldn‘t help thinking that if I were them, Gregor would probably be dead before I realized what I‘d done. Then again, the point of this novella is to make you think about those things.

Also, what bedroom has 3 doors?

I didn‘t like this as much as I was hoping. Im not sure why, there was nothing ‘wrong‘ with it, it just didn‘t land with me the way I hoped. I enjoyed the Castle so much and this is like his most famous story. Perhaps it being so short meant I didn‘t have time to get into the world and interact with it in a deep way? It felt more odd than profound to me, like there was something I just wasn‘t connecting with even tho I‘m sure it was there.

Tamra Have you read The Trial too? Scary. It‘s been awhile, but his works are those that can be read repeatedly. It‘s time for a reread on my end. 6mo
Emilymdxn @tamra not yet but I really want to read it soon! I‘ve just read Metamorphosis and the Castle 6mo
the_real_archimboldi A story doesn‘t necessarily have to be long to be profound, short stories can hit just as hard, if not harder, because of their ambiguity. The Trial was good and surprisingly funny, laugh out loud hilarious at some parts. A lot of the time, though, you are mystified as to what is actually happening in the novel, which is what Kafka probably would have wanted. Very surreal. Definitely worth the read. 3mo
Emilymdxn @the_real_archimboldi in general I agree with you and I‘m a big fan of short stories overall, I just didn‘t think this one did brevity as well as others as I‘ve read in my personal opinion. I have now read the Trial too and did like it but much preferred the Castle. Maybe I‘m just not destined to adore Kafka as much as some other writers 3mo

April 14 2019: Happy birthday, Peter Capaldi: a brilliant actor, a wonderful man, and a talented artist. He designed this cover of The Metamorphosis for an auction back in 2017.
(On a related note, he directed an Oscar-winning short film called Franz Kafka's It's a Wonderful Life.)

I don‘t have a strong memory of using Cliff Notes but if I ever did it would have been for The Metamorphosis. I am not a fan of existentialism. This was a dark little fable. The genius of the author is to totally leave it to the reader as to whether Gregor has become a vile animal or is suffering mentally and as a consequence is shunned by his family. The tale has its funny moments, but its overall a dark story.

Amabear @jamie_in_the_library there are parts that are hard and long, since you want to know what happens and not listen to all of her winded thoughts- but once you‘ve read it- it becomes so much more enjoyable the second time. I listened to this short audiobook over the last couple of days. It's a weird and sad story of a man's unexplained transformation into a large insect, along with how that change impacts his life and family relationships. I've been meaning to read it since reading The Breast, which mentions it. I liked this one better, but I also think I have a slightly better appreciation for both after comparing them.
