Littens could I get your opinions please?

Those who buy and read ebooks a lot which company do you buy from and why? (Amazon, B&N, Kobo, etc.)

I‘ve used Amazon Kindle for years and have quite an extensive library but am considering if I should make the switch to another provider. Thoughts?

Thanks! ☺️

AkashaVampie I do Amazon. I have always done Amazon. 3mo
Amiable I have purchased e-books from Barnes & Noble for years. I started with that because I had a Nook and the Kindle then didn‘t allow for the e-pub format, which was the format that the library had available for e-books. Plus, I was never happy with Amazon‘s business model in dealing with authors and publishers. And the way they treat their employees. (edited) 3mo
Reagan-reads I love my kobo. 3mo
See All 11 Comments
Lcsmcat I use all three. I have a larger library on Kindle because I started with them, but I mostly use it for public domain books now. I prefer Kobo for books that I can get that way because I can support my local independent book store, and often use it for books by living authors. I have the nook app because I inherited my mother-in-law‘s Nook, which I have since passed on to my daughter, but have fewer books on it. 3mo
avgeyer I have exclusively used kindle for ebooks, I've never had any complaints! 3mo
Hazel2019 I really like shopping at B&N. You go in, are surrounded by books. Just a great place to be. It is more expensive though - especially when purchasing at the physical locations. Amazon would be my second choice. 3mo
AmyG I have an ipad where I do everything. I mostly read ebooks from apple and amazon (I have a kindle app on my ipad). 3mo
Texreader Amazon Kindle because I like all the freebies 3mo
tournevis If you are in the US, Kobo is less interesting because the catalogue is smaller than Amazon. B&N works on Kobo if you sideload, though. In fact, the ability to sideload is Kobo's best, greatest feature. The difference used to be enormous, but now, if you're in the US, it's more about which language you read in. If it's English, Kobo has fewer books in the Kobo store than Amazon. If it's any other language, Kobo it is. 3mo
Redwritinghood I buy on Kindle and have no problems with it. I haven‘t used the others, though, so I can‘t compare. 3mo
TheLibrarian I‘ve only used Amazon for my Kindle but I love it. With the decline in B&N, I was worried what would happen to my ebooks if I had their ereader. 3mo

I need some advice for a friend who wants to get an e reader for her textbooks (she‘s a university teacher). Vitalsource bookshelf is the programme she uses@on her computer and she wants something compatible. #ereader #textbooks #advice.

LibrarianRyan For text book the best bed is a tablet. I‘m partial to iPads but she needs to check out the apps first. 3mo
Tianarose @LibrarianRyan Gotcha. That is what I was thinking as I was googling. Doesn‘t really seem to be a reader for textbooks. (edited) 3mo

I read ebooks too but this story makes me sad. 😢https://www.publishersweekly.com/pw/by-topic/industry-news/publisher-news/article/80694-pearson-kills-print-textbooks.html

cathipink Whoa. I don't read ebooks at all - this would be challenging for me as a student. I wonder of pricing will change. 5mo
Leftcoastzen @cathipink I have heard that from many students. Some really prefer real books , some say they find a difference in retention of the materials. 5mo
See All 7 Comments
Patchshank If they drop the prices of textbooks it might be worth it. But I see them jacking the prices up because college students will no longer be able to buy used books. 5mo
NeonKnight Agree about the issue of pricing. Always preferred physical copies as well. I can‘t explain why, but the material always felt more accessible that way. 5mo
daniwithtea I‘d prefer real textbooks for sure, but I always go with the e-text when available because the cost differs by orders of magnitude. What drives me nuts about the e-texts though is that they‘re not normal ebooks - they‘re only accessible through the publishers web apps, which forces me to read on my computer at my desk rather than my kindle. :/ 5mo
ValerieAndBooks This will be interesting to follow as I have kid(s) being in college (undergrad) for the next 4 years. Wonder how professors will feel about this as well. 5mo

This is all my books in the cloud. Just kidding. I have more than that! 😂

I'm sure you guys probably know about this, it's been around for a little bit. I still love it and like to share. If there's even just one person that doesn't know. It's a service called Bookbub. You can get an email filled with free & less than $5 ebooks every day! It helps me keep my little book dragon in books too. Link below! 💜 📚

Branwen Wow! Thank you for posting this! I kust downloaded 5 free fantasy books! 💕📚🦄 6mo
SmartSassery @Branwen No problem! I want to share this with the world. I've been a bookbubber (😂) for a long time now. The amount of books offered just keeps growing. 6mo

I really love #netgalley and the possibilities you get there.... But it would be so wonderful, if you could also download the reading time, you need to read all the gorgeous books...

aprilpohren Oh yes! Lol! 8mo
cobwebmoth Yes. I've bought so many ebooks that I can't always remember whether I have a certain title or not. I'm going to make an effort to catalog everything soon. 8mo
TheReadingMermaid @cobwebmoth have you considered using the LibraryThing app to catalog your library for you? You can scan in physical books and you can even make a library shelf for your ebooks so you can see what you have and what you don't. And books are easily looked up through the search function to check and see if you have them or not. That's what I use and I don't know what I'd do without it. 8mo
cobwebmoth @TheReadingMermaid That's what I want to do.😊 I started scanning a few things that were sitting around, but I haven't had time to do more. I have more physical books than I realized, too.😄 8mo
TheReadingMermaid @cobwebmoth Right? I had to make a day of it and just put my mind to catalog in my library for the entire day. I'm glad I did it though because now I can look up books on my phone when I'm on the go 😁 8mo
rretzler I have to echo @TheReadingMermaid. I joined LibraryThing around 9 years ago because I kept buying the same books at the bookstore - this was before Kindle. I have nearly all my old print books entered and all of my ebooks and I always check LT before I buy. The other site I use quite a bit is FictFact. It‘s free and allows you to track series reading a little better than LT. Although LT is indispensable to me! 8mo
Crazeedi @TheReadingMermaid this is a great idea. So how do you put ebooks in?? 8mo

Help Littens, i've wanted to upgrade to a Kindle Paperwhite for a while now, but i also use pdf's a lot and reading a pdf file on a kindle is just terrible. Is the pdf format terrible on the Paperwhite as well or are there any other ereaders that support pdf format.

Samplergal I don‘t know how the pdf format is on the paperwhite is, but I love my paperwhite. It‘s perfect to read outdoors, which I do a lot. I read library books and kindle books on mine. Maybe someone else here can tell you more about software. Love mine. And I was a slow convert to technology for books. 10mo
sudi @Samplergal i read a lot of pdf for school and reading a pdf on the tablet for long hours makes my eyes hurt. I was hoping there might be a ereader out there that supports pdf format. Hopefully i find one 10mo
TrishB I have a paperwhite and really like it. But I‘ve never tried pdfs. 10mo

Puredragonstar So if you go on YouTube there‘s these guys that do nothing but test e-readers and they try all the functions. I‘ve tried pdf‘s on the paper white and it‘s small and frustrating to pinch in. I love my kindles but honestly for work or school it‘s more of a hassle. My best friend wants to buy herself a bigger e-reader just for PDFs and she has a kindle as well... https://www.youtube.com/user/goodereader (edited) 10mo
sudi @TrishB i have the kindle, but the pdf's are terrible. I'm thinking it might be the same for paperwhite 10mo
sudi @Puredragonstar thank you so much, you're a star 💖💖💖 i'm going to check it out 😊 10mo

I‘ve often wondered about the cost of ebooks for libraries. Interesting to learn that for one popular book, “after 26 checkouts, the ebook license expires and the library had to purchase another one.”

Mc_cart_ny I've heard that before! It does seem like ebook pricing is really off for libraries... 11mo
Bakingbookworm Yes, it‘s ridiculous. I work in a library and ebooks are very popular but the selection is limited (especially here in Canada) and the cost is exorbitant. 11mo
Samplergal I had no idea. One more reason to become a Friend of the Library near you. 11mo

ReadingSusan Yeah it‘s really sad 😕 My library doesn‘t have ebooks because we can‘t afford to. 11mo
RebL Thanks for the link. 11mo
PagesByTheWater This was a very interesting article, thank you for sharing. 11mo
ohyeahthatgirl It's also mire labor intensive for the cheaper metered access books. One of our librarians has to go through weekly and decide which expired licenses to rebuy. 11mo
thebacklistbook Yes this circulating on Twitter as well very important. If any of you have Twitter you should check out the tag #eContentForlibraries 11mo
TieDyeDude It has always bothered me how expensive ebooks are. Often times just a couple dollars less than a paperback, sometimes more than a physical book. That's why I never put much stock in ebooks. I mostly use the libraries digital collection for audio, though I can't imagine that being cheap either. 11mo

So these are actually related. In previous years, I hardly ever read ebooks and I never borrowed books because I didn‘t have a library card or anyone to borrow from. This year, I got a library card and ended up using it to borrow a lot of ebooks because of the convenience. So my high ebook reading and high borrow rate this year are because of that. I still like physical books better, but ebooks have definitely grown on me.

Daisey I completely understand! I don‘t make it to the library often, but I borrow ebooks constantly. 11mo

So for some reason I'm not getting emails about the ebooks that are being gifted to me. CS at Amazon was no help, they said they didn't see anything in my que waiting to be downloaded and that they couldn't help me if I didn't know the titles of the books. I think the first step though is probably just to resend. So if you sent me a #kindlitsy book, would you please try resending it? Thank you!
@britt_brooke @Riveted_Reader_Melissa @MaGoose

Elma The email on the #kindlitsy list is the correct email. 12mo

MaGoose I just resent the email, too. 12mo
Elma @Riveted_Reader_Melissa @dariazeoli @britt_brooke I found them! They were automatically being sent to the trash folder.🤪 12mo

Question for ebook library users.

How do you read your ebooks you get from the library?
2 of these options?
All of these options?

MinDea @WorldsOkayestStepMom Do you read on your phone then? 14mo
arubabookwoman I use Libby on my iPad. KCLS has a great selection of ebooks! (edited) 14mo

MinDea @arubabookwoman oh that's a good idea! Mahbe I'll try Libby on my iPad! 14mo
KathyWheeler Our library uses Hoopla and Cloud Library. I use them on my phone, iPad, and tablet. Sometimes on my Kindle Fire too. 14mo
WorldsOkayestStepMom Yep, mostly. I also have a kindle, but haven't used it as much since I started using Libby. 14mo
shadowspeak17 I use Libby, Hoopla, and Axis 360 on my iPad, and occasionally on my phone. 14mo
RedxoHearts I use Libby and sometimes the send to kindle feature 14mo
JoScho I use Overdrive and send them to my Kindle 14mo
Cinfhen Mostly #OverDrive & always on my iPad 14mo
Ashley_Nicoletto Libby and then send them to my kindle. 14mo
Lcsmcat Libby and Kindle 14mo
AmyG Libby and ipad. Once in a blue moon on my phone. (edited) 14mo
Bookjunkie57 All of the above plus our library offers access to Hoopla Digital. 14mo
zzz Always Libby with "send to Kindle" option for me✔ 14mo
CouronneDhiver Overdrive in my iPhone. Super convenient for being out and about. I tried Libby too, but I don‘t like the appearance/functionality as much as Overdrive 14mo
Blaire Libby using send to kindle. I don‘t like to read on my phone. Will do hoopla for audio. 14mo
xicanti Overdrive/Libby for ebooks and most audiobooks; RBDigital for additional audiobooks, magazines, and the occasional ebook only available on that platform. I was a heavy Hoopla user, too, until my library unsubscribed from the audio catalogue at the end of December. (They never offered the comics.) That was a huge blow. 14mo
inthegreensandblues Libby with the send to Kindle feature. I prefer to read on my Kindle Paperwhite, and if I'm away from home without it, I read on the Kindle app on my phone since it's synced. 14mo
Redwritinghood Kindle for me. For audiobooks, on my iPhone. 14mo
GripLitGrl Libby & Hoopla 14mo
sprainedbrain Usually on my kindle, but sometimes in Libby. 😃 14mo
Moony Overdrive and here in Germany the most library use "onleihe" 14mo

The new Kobo Forma will be released on Oct 16th. It looks a bit like Kindle Oasis. I'm so tempted to get it but the price is steep - CAD$299.99 😯 Do I really need another ereader??? Do you own more than one ereader?

Unboxing video:

#koboereader #ereader

taraWritesSci I own both the Kindle Paperwhite and the Kobo Clara HD, and together they still are cheaper than this or the Oasis (at release). 🤐 The size and shape of the Forma isn't my thing but if it makes reading better for people, I'm all for it! 1y
thereadingowlvina @taraWritesSci Yes, the size and shape are a little odd. I'll have to see the physical product to find out if it's worth buying. Honestly, with that price, I thought this new ereader will have the audiobook function 😐 14mo
thereadingowlvina @taraWritesSci Btw, any differences in your reading experience when using Kindle Paperwhite and Kobo Clara? 🙂 14mo
See All 6 Comments
taraWritesSci @thereadingowlvina It doesn't even have audiobook capability? Blech, that's terrible with a price tag like that. As for the differences between Paperwhite and Clara, I feel like the Paperwhite is more refined when it comes to functionality with settings, being able to email documents or books directly to the device, and the connection to libraries via Overdrive. They're both nearly identical when it comes to reading though. 14mo
thereadingowlvina @taraWritesSci Yes, it's pretty pricey for a non-audiobook ereader. And thanks for sharing your thoughts on these ereaders. Appreciate it! 💕🤗 14mo
GabrielleDubois I prefer much more paperback books, but I have a Kindle for old books I can't find anymore in paper. This said, this morning I found an old handbag in the top of my cupboard which I hadn't used for one year and what was inside? My Kindle I thought I had lost! Fortunately I didn't buy another one since! 😊 14mo

1. Yes! Before ebooks, I would buy purses based solely on whether they could hold two books. 😆👜🤷🏻‍♀️
2. Yes, I do most of my reading from library books. It‘s also one of my favorite places to take my kids.
3. Yes. With young children, it‘s a lot safer (for the books) and more convenient (for me) to read on my phone. I still prefer physical copies though.

rubyslippersreads I used to pick out purses that way too. 😄 1y
Sace I also consider book toting capabilites before purchasing a purse. 😂 1y
SilversReviews I love it about the purses. I buy one large enough for a book too or I just carry a book with me if it doesn‘t fit. Cannot be without a book. 😊 Thanks for playing. 1y

I finally broke down & bought my first e-reader. Still prefer physical books, but I can‘t deny the convenience when I travel. Plus, I can add the Overdrive, Hulu, & Netflix apps - that‘s a whole lot of portable entertainment.

The Kindle Fire is on sale right now ($59.99 for the HD 8 w/16GB or $39.99 for the 7 w/ 8GB). I got mine at Target, so I got an additional 5% off with my RedCard.

thereadingowlvina Nice! I hope you enjoy ereading 😊 2y

CouronneDhiver Woohoo! Enjoy 2y

Kaye Sounds like a great deal. You‘re right you‘ll have all your entertainment in one item ! Enjoy. 2y
jpmcwisemorgan For a long time I refused to cave but I‘ve had one for a few years now and it‘s benefits outweigh the negative. I bought a Fire so I can do more than read and that‘s been great too. I ride the bus and having a Fire rather than a book means my bag is lighter. I can watch movies in bed, play a game, any number of things. Also, I‘m at the point where my eye doctor is starting to suggest reading glasses and having bigger font is a big plus. 2y
callunakeep I have a Kindle and I NEVER use it I use the kindle app on my phone instead ... my iPad is too big to carry around every day .... I have really been considering getting a Fire because of its lightweight and small size AND the fact that it takes memory cards so I can store more books than I can on my phone! 2y

A year ago, my county‘s library system decided Overdrive was too confusing for patrons and switched exclusively to Cloud Library. I thought this was lame and have been using my Brooklyn Public Library out of state membership to supplement.

Next month, they are switching BACK to Overdrive!

This does wonders for my Kindle usage... but Mount TBR is further doomed 😬

Due to vision issues I have to majorly cut back on eBooks. They are making my eyes very tired. And it's a bit upsetting because many of the independent authors that I read are only in eBook format. But I look at it this way, it will give other people a chance to get what would have been my galleys. And the authors will get a whole new audience.

Natasha.C.Barnes Awesome! Mine's so old it's not even paper white....maybe that's why I hardly use it...🤔 2y
EvieBee Hmmm. I think I need one too. Almost considered buying a Kobo for the waterproof feature but now I can keep it in the family! 2y
Kaylamburson This is tempting! But do i really need it? The perk would be reading in the bathtub without worry. Although I'm wondering if droplets of water would confuse the touch screen? 2y

Lola @Kaylamburson Bathtub use if exactly what I would use this for. I haven‘t had issues with my waterproof Nook but I don‘t use it that often because almost all of my ebooks are in the Kindle format. 2y
Lola @EvieBee I thought about the waterproof Kobo too but ended up with the Nook because I bought it during a book fair with B & N that was benefitting my kids‘ school-at least that‘s how I justified it 😂😂) but almost all of my ebooks are Kindle so this is a much better choice for me. 2y
Lola @Natasha.C.Barnes My Kindle Keyboard is ancient (my first Kindle so I have a soft spot for it 🙃) but I still keep it charged up and use it occasionally. 2y
BarbaraTheBibliophage I have a Paperwhite but the Oasis looks fabulous. Added to my wish list! 2y
Kaylamburson Hmm I'll have to consider it. Maybe after the holidays the price will go down a little. My paperwhite is still great, but the battery doesn't last weeks anymore. Now only a few days.. I have a fire, too, but I use that more for audible and as a tablet. I hate reading on the screen. @lola 2y
Lola @BarbaraTheBibliophage I wasn‘t sure that I liked the Oasis form factor (I think it looks odd in photos) but checked one out in person at the Amazon store here and was very impressed. 2y
Lola @Kaylamburson I am not a fan of tablet/phone reading but will do it in a pinch-I much prefer dedicated e-readers. I use my phone for Audible so won‘t get the 32G version of the Oasis. The 8 is already double the Voyage and the PW. I just spent this much $ tonight to have my daughter‘s head professionally deloused (😩) so this purchase will have to wait a bit. 2y
BarbaraTheBibliophage I didn't realize how massive the 32 is compared to the PW. Might be okay with just an 8G. Thanks. 2y
Kaylamburson Oh no!!! I'm so sorry to hear that you and your daughter just had to deal with lice. Ugh. I remember getting it in elementary school and it was so traumatizing when my parents had to take away all my stuffed animals for the few days. I hope you're both doing better now that she is deloused. But yeah, I'm not a fan of tablet reading either. Occasionally I will on my phone, but it just annoys me and kills my battery. I mostly do audio in my phone 2y
Lola @Kaylamburson Thanks :) We went through this when she was 11 (she‘s 15 now) and it was much harder on everyone back then. It‘s still yucky and gross but not as traumatizing. Maybe a little on me-I thought this was strictly in the realm of elementary school parenting 🙄 2y
Suetara I played with the original Oasis at the Amazon bookstore in Chicago earlier this week. (Had to see the store, just to satisfy my curiosity.). I liked it but wasn‘t really tempted to upgrade from my 1st gen paperwhite. But now, I seriously want the new Oasis. Decisions, decisions. 2y
Kaylamburson Ugh that's awful. But hopefully the last one you have to deal with! I was getting nervous because I go to an elementary school once a week during lunch to read with a student, and she was itching and said that there was a lice breakout at the school. I felt very itchy that day, haha. @lola 2y
Lola @Suetara Are you in Chicago, too? We really need to do a Chicago Litsy meetup at some point! 2y
Lola @Kaylamburson Yeah, I‘ve been itching all night, even though I git the all-clear 😐 2y
Kaylamburson It's crazy how our minds can play tricks. Well I hope you have a good, itch-free night!! 2y
Suetara I‘m in Champaign, but I‘d be happy to come to Chicago for a meetup. My husband and I were in Chicago for the day on Monday-hit some bookstores and a comic store. I‘m so sorry about the lice. On the first day of summer in 2016, I discovered that both of my kids had them. Not our best couple of weeks. I had taken some time off of work to hang out with them, and that was NOT the way we had intended to spend our time. 2y
Lola @Suetara Not exactly quality time with the kids... my oldest is applying to UoICU :) I hope you had fun in the city. Lots of great bookstores to explore. (edited) 2y
Suetara I work at the UofICU. :) We had a great time in Chicago, thanks. Love the kids but it‘s nice to occasionally have a day just for us. 2y
Lola @Suetara Agree! 🙂 2y

I know not everyone is a fan of e-readers, but I could not live without mine. I still prefer to have a physical book, but I use my e-readers for all of my e-galleys and probably 90% of my library rentals are e-books.

Are you an e-reader fan? Do you have an reader (or more than one)? What is you preferred e-reader?

I thought this beautiful bookmark from @drawntothepages seemed very fitting for this post/prompt!

#allthebooksjuly e-reader love

rubyslippersreads I ❤️ reading on my iPad, and having ebooks on my iPhone means I'm never stuck somewhere without a book. 😊 2y
Ruri_kaichou I love my Kindle. I try to borrow and buy digitally first. And if there is a book I absolutely love, then I will buy a physical copy. 2y
Jess7 Kindle paper white - love it 2y

DGRachel My fav is my Kindle Touch - perfect for reading outside with no glare, but I like my iPad for e-comics and my Kindle Fire with it's blue light filter for reading at night. 2y
monkeygirlsmama I read nearly all ebooks these days as where I live I don't have an English library or bookshop. I have 3 iPad minis (my 32g, my old 16g, and dh's old 32g..lol), but only use two of them. I have the Kindle app, iBooks, Bluefire, Serial Reader, Aldiko, Freading, Libby, Overdrive, Hoopla, and Zinio. I borrow books from the library and associated sites, get galleys from NetGalley, and buy the occasional ebook on Amazon. Kindle app also on my phone.😏 2y
monkeygirlsmama Oh yeah, I also have an original B&N Nook too, but I don't get it out much. 2y
Maike I love my kindle voyage. I try to switch between reading physical books and ebooks, but more often than not my (German) library has the English eBook available but not the physical copy, so I go for that. I still buy a physical copy of my favorite books, though. 2y
MrsMetcalfeReads I have a kindle fire now but I really really miss my kindle paperwhite. I love checking out books on my kindle through the library, it's so handy! 2y
