This made for good beach reading. I love a cheap mass market paperback that you don‘t have to worry about getting beat up. I‘ve been reading this as a #buddyread with @hclaird and tracking our progress on Storygraph (awesome buddy read feature now!).

Allende‘s prose style is really beautiful, but the Dickensian coming of age story focuses less on an overarching plot and more on character sketches and episodic adventures in the MC‘s life.

Like all Allende‘s books I‘ve read, Eva Luna is a winding tale starting with her mother, as a baby with blazing red hair, crawling out of a Latin American jungle knowing nothing of her parents. Eva‘s own story is full of unique characters and loves, including her mother‘s unusual father figure, multiple mother-like guardians, a revolutionary, a colorful transsexual, a child survivor of WWII, and more in a world coming undone in a dictatorship. ⬇️

Here‘s my haul from visits the last two days to the Little Free Library around the corner in our neighborhood. I‘ve almost finished my McCall Smith series (perfect condition!) and many others on my tbr list including the tagged book (ragged condition but I‘ve been looking for it for years). Secret History was my daughter‘s trade. I‘m tickled pink y‘all!!

She really is a wonderful story teller but I'm not sure I got into this book at all. I don't think i was ever really invested in Eva.

Time to finally read some Allende. I couldn't resist this 1980s paperback edition at the thrift show.

Eva Luna is an orphaned storyteller who trades her stories like currency. She tells about eccentric characters that cross her path in a country in south America. Isabel Allende did it again with this one. Extremely interesting characters, vivid descriptions, and colorful dialogue.

This was my first Allende and I just absolutely loved it.

I liked Of Love and Shadows better.

Picture is from the inside cover. I hope Fanny liked it.

Nevertheless, toward the end of her life she found an explanation for the age-old desire of humans to preserve their dead when she discovered that having the bodies nearby makes them easier to remember.

My plan for this already very hot day.

Not my favorite Allende (House of the Spirits has yet to be unseated for me) but her prose is so pretty it hurts! A worthwhile read with a wide cast of characters.

Can't say it's the best book I've read, but would read it again. I've only read two books of this author and have to say the other one was better.

I decided I was beautiful- for the simple reason that I wanted to be.

#readjanuary Day 8 - title with a proper name. How convenient that I'm currently reading Eva Luna in Spanish for #languagelearning. All the way up to page 14, and I can read about every other sentence now without having to look up words. Progress!

Reading in Spanish for #languagelearning. It is painfully slow going for me, and boy does my Spanish need improvement. Should have done this sooner.

Day 4 of #seasonsreadings2016 was a book not in English. I have a copy of Eva Luna in Spanish on my shelf. I read it eons ago, painfully slowly, then went back and read it in English translation to enjoy it with less effort. I love Isabel Allende, and loved this book. Definitely time for a re-read, in Spanish even.

This is my all time favorite book. before I bought the eBook I went through seven copies of this book. I read it, at least in part, every year and have for the last eight years.
