Fireman
Fireman | Joe Hill
From the award-winning, New York Times bestselling author of NOS4A2 and Heart-Shaped Box comes a chilling novel about a worldwide pandemic of spontaneous combustion that threatens to reduce civilization to ashes and a band of improbable heroes who battle to save it, led by one powerful and enigmatic man known as the Fireman. The fireman is coming. Stay cool.No one knows exactly when it began or where it originated. A terrifying new plague is spreading like wildfire across the country, striking cities one by one: Boston, Detroit, Seattle. The doctors call it Draco Incendia Trychophyton. To everyone else it s Dragonscale, a highly contagious, deadly spore that marks its hosts with beautiful black and gold marks across their bodies before causing them to burst into flames. Millions are infected; blazes erupt everywhere. There is no antidote. No one is safe.Harper Grayson, a compassionate, dedicated nurse as pragmatic as Mary Poppins, treated hundreds of infected patients before her hospital burned to the ground. Now she s discovered the telltale gold-flecked marks on her skin. When the outbreak first began, she and her husband, Jakob, had made a pact: they would take matters into their own hands if they became infected. To Jakob s dismay, Harper wants to live at least until the fetus she is carrying comes to term. At the hospital, she witnessed infected mothers give birth to healthy babies and believes hers will be fine too. . . if she can live long enough to deliver the child.Convinced that his do-gooding wife has made him sick, Jakob becomes unhinged, and eventually abandons her as their placid New England community collapses in terror. The chaos gives rise to ruthless Cremation Squads armed, self-appointed posses roaming the streets and woods to exterminate those who they believe carry the spore. But Harper isn t as alone as she fears: a mysterious and compelling stranger she briefly met at the hospital, a man in a dirty yellow fire fighter s jacket, carrying a hooked iron bar, straddles the abyss between insanity and death. Known as The Fireman, he strolls the ruins of New Hampshire, a madman afflicted with Dragonscale who has learned to control the fire within himself, using it as a shield to protect the hunted . . . and as a weapon to avenge the wronged. In the desperate season to come, as the world burns out of control, Harper must learn the Fireman s secrets before her life and that of her unborn child goes up in smoke."

This pains me greatly. I really like Joe Hill‘s short stories. But this is over 700 pages of generic post apocalypse ‘humans suck‘ tribalism, with a chemistry less love story at the center. Nothing here works, and it takes ages to slog through. The self immolation disease known as ‘Dragonscale‘ is the only interesting thing here. That it was not exploited in more interesting ways is a disappointment.

This book surprised me. I‘m not sure how it ended up in my kindle library, but I‘m glad it did. I do enjoy a good end-of-the-world pandemic/apocalypse book and the twist in this one was really interesting. I laughed, I cried, and I enjoyed following along with Harper et al.

Since I was introduced to Libby, I started to see if I could listen to books I‘ve hoarded. Audio books are easier for me now especially since I start graduate school back up next week, and I love working and listening. Trying to get in some physical reading coupled with it as well, it‘s kind of nice to have both avenues when reading a book! And It‘s almost spooky season right?? 🎃

While I enjoyed the book along with the great characters & world building, there just wasn't a lot of story going on here to warrant almost 800 pages.
There were moments that just dragged on endlessly, but those were balanced by some spectacular sequences and plot twists.
In short: Entertaining, but overblown.

Not the best book to read during a pandemic. The characters were too captivating to put the book down once I started. There were several really gory scenes in this book that I did not think were needed. Overall, a solid 3 star for me.

This was good. It was long, but it was good. I liked that Allie, the teenager, was portrayed realistically – at least I thought so. Good and bad, temperamental, like a teenager. We also had some crazy characters and some power-hungry ones. I do wonder if there will be a sequel.

TheNeverendingTBR Certainly my least favourite of Joe Hill's but don't give up if you're still new to his work, NOS4R2 and Horns are absolutely brilliant! 4y
IamIamIam @TheNeverendingTBR I read NOS4A2 and it was decent but long winded. I'm not a fan of The Stand, and I've read it 3 times, so that didn't help. I might watch Horns or try it on audio. 👌 4y

This is one of the most uninspired books I've ever read, besides King using Matheson's short stories to write novels. ? The language is all outdated King crap (when was the last time you heard the word "snatch" used to describe female anatomy?!) and the characters are sad rip offs of The Stand... most blatant. It's so disappointing because when Hill doesn't feel like he has to copy Daddy, he's got great storytelling ability.

TheNeverendingTBR My least favourite of Joe Hill's for sure, a read-oncer for me. 4y
IamIamIam @TheNeverendingTBR I thought NOS4A2 was drawn out but at least it was fairly original and had great characters. This feels like reheated shrimp... 🤢 4y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I'm surprised you finished. You weren't too keen on this a few days ago either. As for the last time I heard "snatch" in that context, I think I was drunk and reading the Dear Penthouse letters at a party about 16 years ago. 4y
See All 6 Comments
IamIamIam @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick LMFAO, that's a perfect example!!!! 😂 I'm only about halfway through, skimming a lot of the unnecessary backstory of a totally random character. If it gets too supernatural, I'll probably bail. I want to see what's behind The Fireman, though. I'm sure I'll be dissappointed. 🙄 4y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick Well I hope you get a satisfying outcome after all this! 4y

I liked this but it slowed down in the middle considerably, it's like Joe Hill had a beginning and an ending set out and filled in the middle while writing; which is okay obviously but I felt like the story sort of dragged on in the middle and I found it hard to care about what was going on.

It read like a YA novel, I'm not saying that's bad or anything; I guess I went into it with high expectations due to The Stand comparison.

3/5 Pick! 💫

RamsFan1963 This sounds interesting, but I bailed on Heart Shaped Box and Strange Weather. I'm leery of trying another Joe Hill book. 😬😬😬 4y
Reggie I actually read this twice, not because I wanted to but because a horror group I was in picked it. The first time, I was completely destroyed by the seemingly cruel joke of the last 100 pages. The second time, it almost read like a comedy to me, I was laughing so hard. 🤷🏽‍♂️ 4y
TheNeverendingTBR @RamsFan1963 I've read Heart Shaped Box it wasn't that great, I agree; I've not read Strange Weather though. Don't give up on Joe Hill though because Horns and NOS4R2 are absolutely brilliant! 💫 4y
TheNeverendingTBR @Reggie I certainly wouldn't read it again, it's a read-oncer to me 😏 I'd like to see an adaptation though. 4y

Still powerless at home and out of sorts living with my in laws. 😭 So far, Dragonscale is the most interesting thing about this book. It's like Joe Hill went through Daddy's closet playing dress up and came out with all King's old crap on a new body. 🙄 The pathology of the spore interests me, the characters, so far, are not. Renaming characters from The Stand and changing their genders doesn't hold water for me... *deep breath*
