The Invasion of the Tearling
The Invasion of the Tearling: (The Tearling Trilogy 2) | Erika Johansen
With each passing day, Kelsea Glynn is growing into her new responsibilities as Queen of the Tearling. By stopping the shipments of slaves to the neighbouring kingdom of Mortmesne, she crossed the Red Queen, a brutal ruler whose power derives from dark magic, who is sending her fearsome army into the Tearling to take what is hers. And nothing can stop the invasion. But as the Mort army draws ever closer, Kelsea develops a mysterious connection to a time before the Crossing, and she finds herself relying on a strange and possibly dangerous ally: a woman named Lily, fighting for her life in a world where being female can feel like a crime. The fate of the Tearling and that of Kelseas own soul may rest with Lily and her story, but Kelsea may not have enough time to find out. In this dazzling sequel to her bestselling debut The Queen of the Tearling, Erika Johansen brings back favourite characters, including the Mace and the Red Queen, and introduces unforgettable new players, adding exciting layers to her multidimensional tale of magic, mystery and a fierce young heroine.

This book completely utterly changed the series I was reading. Book one you are enjoying a cup of tea with magic and an amazing queen. Book two (this book) you open your eyes after that first sip and realize you are somewhere completely different, and the tea has morphed into some sort of terrifying distopian concoction. By the end it‘s a wow. A woah. A huh… very well told story. Conflicted and curious and glad I read it.

Slightly less enthused about this book than the first one - still great writing, but hard to watch the main character get led astray despite the best intentions of all around her. Will definitely finish the series, just this book was very stressful to read!

This is a great follow up to the first book in the series. Loved the MC and how the author developed her character. The world building was good also. The plot was clever and there were a few twists that took me by surprise. I am already looking forward to reading the next book. 4⭐ Another book for the #SeriesRead2021 challenge! 📚📚📚

Ugh. This became a slog through irritating flashbacks and random plot twists. Parts of it where really good and well written but parts of it are just a big What? The flashbacks are also very much a scary near future, which I did NOT appreciate having sprung on me. Also; I really didn‘t care for William Tear, who seems like a creepy cult leader and history shows that cult leaders are bad news for women 2.5/5 stars

Hazel0303 I totally agree. It was such a strange book and so much of it came out of left field for me. I LOVED this series so much, was so excited when this came out and then was highly confused for a lot of it. It felt like there should have been a book in between?? I‘ve read that she is working on follow up books? 5y
Hazel0303 But there is no timeline as to when they will come. Sounds weird to me, but I‘d really like to have another crack at it. 5y
Hazel0303 Okay, sorry. I just realized my comment was geared toward the third book, which I thought this was. I remember really liking the second book, but it‘s been a long time. Sorry, for this very weird thread! 5y

iread2much @Hazel0303 her writing is really good and it‘s an interesting series, but some of it was soooo random. It‘s like she did that old writing exercise where you just add anything to keep writing and then didn‘t take those bits out 5y
iread2much @Hazel0303 no worries, I thought you meant the third one, I responded in time. My review is that is upcoming 😉 5y

Trigger warning: self harm, rape and domestic abuse

I still like the characters in Kelsea's timeline but the plot for it just seemed...off and scattered a bit. The magic wasn't quite explained and I'm a little lost on that end. I really struggle that the past timeline with William Tearling is far more interesting to me than Kelsea's. I wanted more of that timeline and not so much of Kelsea's

Scochrane26 This series definitely veered away from the typical pattern that I expected with the 2nd book. I like the 3rd but a lot of people don‘t like the ending. 5y

Hoping to finish the Tearling trilogy before years end.

brilliantglow Oh I really enjoyed this series! 5y
Mommamanzi I loved the first book, second book had some really great parts but was slow for me in others, and the third book (for me) was rough. I hope you enjoy it more than I did. So many people loved the series so maybe I am completely missing something in the last book haha. 5y
SW-T @Mommamanzi I wasn‘t a fan of book three. Did enjoy the first two though. 5y

Just started this book and got this acceptance letter to Western University! I can't believe I actually got in. University is not something I ever thought I'd be able to do because I was lazy in high school but a couple years ago I graduated from college with a 4.1GPA and that afforded me this opportunity. Which by the way was a complete last minute decision because I am just really fed up with my current job and want something better.

I finished this four in the morning I had to finish it I must admit that I really enjoyed the second installment to the Tearling trilogy,it gets better by each book. I‘m so engrossed with Kelsea and when the chapter ended there was a new character Lily Mayhew and I was like how did Lily even connect to Kelsea? I loathed her in the beginning,I started to like her towards the end.Okay so I‘m seriously in love with William Tear. 😍 My Rating-⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

After a busy, stressful last two weeks at work I‘m taking this weekend for self care. Haven‘t been on Litsy much, but I have been reading when I can.

Spent the day finishing this. I ❤️ the world of the Tearling! I reread book one last week (as good as I remembered) & am finally finishing the series. Kelsea is growing and becoming the True Queen in the second book. We also learn more about the Mort Queen as well as the origins of the Tearling.

There is so much I love about this series .. I never want it to end!

I wish there was a book just about the precrossing and how it was run into the ground.

This book we see Kelsea and Lily, how their lives link and mean so much. I was so transfixed on getting to the end but also never wanting it to end at the same time.

Book 3 is in my to buy pile :)

Years ago, in Venezuela, homesick and wanting to hear some English, I went to see 'Kill Bill'. I walked out after the rape scene. I retain visual images; they show up in dreams and haunt my thoughts.
This book has left me with the same feeling of sensory assault - rape, domestic violence, torture, murder, in detail. I'm a bit resentful. The first book hooked me, invested in the characters...the second led me down a path I was not prepared for.

Mommamanzi Ugh this makes me so sad. I was looking forward to an awesome part 2. 6y

The sequel did not disappoint! This book had more fantasy elements than the first book, but they were woven into the narrative well, it was a progression not an abrupt shift. This is a darker, more challenging read than the first. Although this book gives more insight into the dystopian 21st Century USA, I still have questions. Hopefully the third book will it up. I couldn't put it down!

I can see the praise for this book.
Johansen followed up with a solid piece, answering some questions from the first book while adding a new layer of intrigue in the form of new characters.
It had a slow start but once I started I kept turning the pages till I was done.
Kelsea has managed to still be intriguing as she's growing into the title of Queen as well as still being a teenage girl that is trying her best, whether good or bad.
