Walk on Earth a Stranger
Walk on Earth a Stranger | Rae Carson
A National Book Award Longlist TitleThe first book in a new trilogy from acclaimed New York Timesbestselling author Rae Carson. A young woman with the magical ability to sense the presence of gold must flee her home, taking her on a sweeping and dangerous journey across Gold Rushera America. Walk on Earth a Stranger begins an epic saga from one of the finest writers of young adult literature.Lee Westfall has a secret. She can sense the presence of gold in the world around her. Veins deep beneath the earth, pebbles in the river, nuggets dug up from the forest floor. The buzz of gold means warmth and life and homeuntil everything is ripped away by a man who wants to control her. Left with nothing, Lee disguises herself as a boy and takes to the trail across the country. Gold was discovered in California, and where else could such a magical girl find herself, find safety?Rae Carson, author of the acclaimed Girl of Fire and Thorns series, dazzles with the first book in the Gold Seer Trilogy, introducing a strong heroine, a perilous road, a fantastical twist, and a slow-burning romance, as only she can.

Loved loved loved the book concept, and i‘m telling you, the first few chapters got me hooked. But after that, it got boring. Half a book containing just walking from illinouis to california is not that interesting, even if you add death and birth and lies and marriage. Ecxited for the second book!

MrsBabki I didn‘t think I would like this book at all but I loved it. Please edit posts for grammar rules. 4y

Well, I finally got through it! I‘ve been waiting years to read this, and then once I started it I wasn‘t feeling it. Luckily, most of that seems to have been due to being sick, because it was good once I got going. I don‘t like present-tense narration, so that took a while to get used to. Should get to the next two books early next year.

I‘ve got a cold or something and have been trying to rest today. While hubby and kiddo took hubby‘s brother to the airport (he came to ride the Polar Express with us yesterday) I did a little reading. Can‘t sleep because I can‘t breathe, but eyes are burning so reading is hard. So, taking a break from the tagged book and enjoying Mike Rowe‘s book in bite-sized pieces.

BookishMarginalia Hope you feel better soon! 4y

I haven‘t felt well for a few days so I took the kids to daycare this morning, made myself do a little housework and then sat on the couch and read the second half of this book. I loved it so much!
A good friend asked me for book recs today, so I‘ll probably be passing it along for her to read. Now I need to get the sequels!

I thought I would read the first couple chapters of this before bed last night... in reality, I stayed up half the night reading. It‘s so good! Thanks again, @kellyann28 for giving it to me! ❤️

kellyann28 Ah I'm glad you like it! I thought it was a great trilogy but I REALLY loved this first book! I really like the time period of the Gold Rush/Oregon Trail though, so I may be biased. 5y

Rae Carson came to the collection to talk about Walk On Earth a Stranger, writing, publishing & a variety of other topics. She spoke about complex issues, used academic language & did all the things you‘d hope for when producing programs that matter to you.
~
I am not into pioneer stories as they were shoveled down my throat as a child. I‘ll make an exception for this book. After I overcame my prejudices, I did like & would recommend this book.

Happy #YAWednesday, and Happy Independence Day to all the Americans!

I've been itching to read Walk on Earth a Stranger. A good friend (@jwashreads) recommended it a while ago and I haven't gotten to it yet. I'm intrigued by the blend of historical fiction and fantasy. But with an upcoming move and my husband in a minimizing mood because of it I've been limiting my book buying, so it's for someday. Sigh.

@TheFunkyBookworm

LibrarianRyan It's going to be a movie. Dang. I guess I need to go pull this off my shelf and get it read. 6y

Great idea @CoffeeNBooks ! This summer I would love to read the tagged book that a good friend (@jwashreads) recommended. I hate running the AC all the time in summer but like getting outside for walks with my daughter early in the day. We look for "treasures" - usually rocks - to bring home.

Absolutely loved this book. I was drawn in from the beginning and it kept my interest throughout. It wasn't what I was expecting -- not much magic or fantasy -- but more historical fiction. Pleasantly surprised and looking forward to reading the next 2 books in the series.

The story opens with the death of Leah‘s parents and the discovery that her Uncle, the only living person to know of Leah‘s secret, has come into town to take ownership of her home and her “witching” powers. Leah hightails it out town and heads west to California. Carson does an amazing job fleshing out her characters. I am so attached to every ‘good‘ character we meet that I feel as if I know them and I continue to think about them every day.

She wrote on the package "I know you don't like westerns, but I don't really either and I still loved it, so I thought you might like it to."
Despite the western setting of this historical fiction I have to agree -- this was a great read!

Synopsis: Leah Westfall can sense gold around her, veins of it. When her family is ripped away from her, she sets out to California where gold has been recently discovered.
Review: Overall, I️ thought that this book was pretty good. The beginning was very captivating. However it wasn‘t one of those books that you can‘t put down, it took me a week to finish it. I️ felt that some parts were unrealistic and dramatic. However, It is worth a read.

This book was alright. I enjoyed the first 1/4--not too crazy about the middle half--enjoyed the last 1/4. The story has potential and I really did enjoy the characters. The ending got me really curious about where the sequel is going to go. I kept imagining the Oregon Trail and saw people dying of dysentery.

My real struggle was the writing. I wanted to throw a thesaurus at the author everytime there was a scene with dialogue.

iread2much I‘m so glad you wrote that. I‘ve seriously considered mailing a thesaurus to some authors.... 6y
SassenachTheBookWizard @iread2much I feel like I get angrier at the publishers/editors for leaving it! 6y

I'm totally digging these B&N Readouts! I've only done two, but it's an awesome way to add an extra book each month. I loved this book. At first I wasn't sure I would, but soon I was really attached to (or hated when appropriate) all the characters and animals which made it necessary to keep reading and make sure they make it West. I'll definitely pick up the second book in the series. #barnesandnoble #readouts

This month's B&N Readouts selection finished up today, and I liked it enough that I've already checked out the second book on Overdrive. 👍🏻

This book is historical fiction that I suppose could be called YA, with a little magic, too, set during the California gold rush. I loved the adventure and I'm very invested in the characters.

Walk on Earth a Stranger was a gripping adventure from start to finish! The story is actually the first book in a trilogy, so it mostly covers the main character Leah's journey across America in a wagon train, with California waiting at the end of the road. The focus is on strong characters and the incredible real struggles intrepid travelers faced in search of a better life, with a dash of gold dust magic sprinkled in. #booknerd #YA #strongwomen

#JuneTunz #day18 #Gold This is on my Mount TBR, a YA novel about a young girl in Gold Rush America who keeps her family fed with her ability to sense gold. In the earth, in a river, anywhere it can be found. When her family are taken from her, she flees to California to escape from the people trying to control her & her talent. This started off a bit slowly for me but I was engrossed by the end! It's primarily historical fiction instead of a fantasy, with the twist that the protagonist can sense gold like a dowser can sense water. It's a coming of age story where a strong young woman finds freedom from the expectations around women's roles after she runs away from her parents' murderer. She dresses as a boy and heads out cross country to the '49 California gold rush.

PenguinInFlight I read the first 5 chapters in my email from EpicReads, and was kind of intrigued! I think I'll have to get it now! ☺️👍🏻 7y
