What We Were Promised
What We Were Promised | Lucy Tan
52 posts | 33 read | 90 to read
Named one of "60 Books We Can't Wait to Read in 2018"by Huffington Post Set in modern Shanghai, a debut by a Chinese-American writer about a prodigal son whose unexpected return forces his newly wealthy family to confront painful secrets and unfulfilled promises. After years of chasing the American dream, the Zhen family has moved back to China. Settling into a luxurious serviced apartment in Shanghai, Wei, Lina and their daughter, Karen, join an elite community of Chinese-born, Western-educated professionals who have returned to a radically transformed city. One morning, in the eighth tower of Lanson Suites, Lina discovers that a childhood keepsake, an ivory bracelet, has gone missing. The incident contributes to a wave of unease that has begun to settle throughout the Zhen household. Wei, a marketing strategist, bows under the guilt of not having engaged in nobler work. Meanwhile, Lina, lonely in her new life of leisure, assumes the modern moniker tai tai-a housewife who does no housework at all. She spends her days haunted by the circumstances surrounding her arranged marriage to Wei and her lingering feelings for his brother, Qiang. Lina and Wei take pains to hide their anxieties, but their housekeeper, Sunny, a hardworking woman with secrets of her own, bears witness to their struggles. When Qiang reappears in Shanghai after decades on the run with a local gang, the family must finally come to terms with the past. From a silk-producing village in rural China, up the corporate ladder in suburban America, and back again to the post-Maoist nouveau riche of modern Shanghai, WHAT WE WERE PROMISED explores the question of what we owe to our country, our families and ourselves.

Loved it! Lucy works with me and I‘m stoked to start hand-selling her book. I genuinely loved it. Her characters are so flawed and yet you can feel the author‘s empathy towards them all as they try to understand each other. Total freaking grand slam of a book.

Good book about Shanghai and the travails of a Chinese couple who return there from the US. The wife has always loved the husband‘s brother; the ayi of course is too good for the whole thing but for a girl from the country, it‘s a great job. I enjoyed it but glad I don‘t own it.

This has been on my #mountTBR for awhile, and it wasn‘t as good as I hoped.

Lina is married to Wei but had originally fallen for his brother Qiang. When Lina and Wei return to China after working in the US for 20 years, Qiang gets in touch, and Lina must confront her feelings.

The other storyline involves Sunny, their maid turned personal assistant, a theft, and working as a single woman in Shanghai.

The book has potential but lacks sizzle.

Megabooks @TheAromaofBooks this is my actual #bookspin 😊 3y
Cinfhen Your review still has me interested …I think I bought this one awhile back on #Kindle / im not rushing to read it maybe I‘ll add audio narration at a later date 3y

Cinfhen Oh good to know about audio, thanks!!! 3y

Cinfhen Sorry, this is easier than email xx 3y
Megabooks @Cinfhen hey, no problem!! Weekend was very chill, which is why I was able to get in so much reading. Kind of back at it tomorrow. I take dad to therapy, but fortunately, 🤞🏻🤞🏻 we‘ve hit a lull in activity, so I‘m getting some time on my own, which has been fantastic!! I‘m getting a major haircut on Thursday, which I‘m excited about. I think I‘m going to get 3 inches off and update my helix to give it volume! 👏🏻👏🏻💇🏻‍♀️ what about you?? 3y
Megabooks @Cinfhen also I bought a new mattress. I‘m excited to try a different type of tempur-pedic. I went with the hybrid instead of just foam, but it won‘t arrive for 3-4 months. 👎🏻 this is probably a really boring update! 😂🤪 3y
Cinfhen It‘s actually just what I like hearing… normalcy!! I need a new mattress too!!! I‘m glad things at home are quieting down😁 3y
Cinfhen It‘s been REALLY great having Niki & Adam around. Even Zach has taken off the week so we‘re just hanging out. Lots of low key outings & meals out 😁although last night I had 2 of my siblings and all their kids ( aged 5-24 - total of 8 kids) for a family bbq!! It was really nice but A LOT of work!! My youngest brother‘s kids are VERY WILD & im not used to all the jumping, shouting and messiness!!!! I‘m wiped out today 3y
Megabooks @Cinfhen lol! Never use the Q-word with anyone medical!! It‘s like telling an actor good luck! But thank you for the support!! Omg, no wonder you‘re wiped out. That is A LOT of kids, but I‘m glad you‘re with family and having fun!! I can‘t wait to hear more stories next week!! 💜💜💜 it‘s midnight and I‘m actually yawning so 🤞🏻 I can get some sleep!! 3y
Cinfhen Ooops…#StayNoisy xxxx sweet dreams 3y
Megabooks @Cinfhen girl, mom just called me into her room three times! #TotallyAwake #OnlyChild #Help!! 😩 3y
Cinfhen Oh no!!!! I jinxed you 😳😫sorry 😘😘 3y
Megabooks @Cinfhen #NotTheFirstTimeNotTheLastTime 😉 it‘s okay! 😘 That‘s what books are for. Starting the tagged on hoopla on my iPad. (edited) 3y
Cinfhen Everyone is still asleep here so I‘m listening to this one for #ReadingAsia21 ~ it‘s VERY DRY but less than 2 hours…almost done #Oman 3y
Cinfhen And I finished this one earlier this morning/ disappointing but super quick - you gave me a full synopsis last summer… 3y

Today's #libraryhaul from both libraries I live between ( I had books due back at both & a hold to pick up from one). It looks bigger than I can possibly get to, but five are cookbooks, so not so bad.😉I am most excited for the tagged book which seems to have plenty of Litsy love. The bottom is a Donna Hay cookbook for a friend. I already own it but it was 1/2-off, so .50 cents-such a bargain for the gorgeous pics & easy recipes. #cookbooklove 😋

GlassAsDiamonds What do you think of the Donna Hay? I love the pictures but always seem to find one odd ingredient in a recipe or something I just don‘t quite love... then got sick of substitution and gave up. 5y
Cathythoughts I have the tagged one stacked ! Looks good 5y
DebinHawaii @GlassAsDiamonds I actually have pretty good luck with her recipes but I think the ingredients may be easier to get here and I use the pictures a lot for inspiration. 5y
DebinHawaii @Cathythoughts It does look really good! 📚👍 5y

Oh man, I loved this book. I‘m at a loss for words to even explain why. This book is about family, friendship, promises, who we become and how we change as we grow.

I‘m in awe of Lucy Tan and the fact that this is her debut novel. I hope to read more from her in the future.

I went into this thinking it would be another MFA novel but Tan delivered so much more. There‘s a lot here: global economics; the generational gap in China - those who remember Mao and those who were born afterwards; But at the core is whether we are born into someone or whether we become someone: a mother; a thief; a wife; a son; a model employee. And how much does free will or fatalism decide who we are born into and who we evolve into?

I think I picked this one up solely based on its cover and I‘m so glad I did. I was getting a “Behold the Dreamers/Crazy Rich Asians mash-up” vibe when I started reading but this easily stands on its on. Incredibly rich, vibrant characters navigating the cultural and social mores of Shanghai. A wonderfully impressive debut. 4⭐️.

In the first chapter of this book, I learn a surprising fact about China – it has one standard time zone, despite it spanning five geographical time zones! How confusing is that? Luckily this book, despite its interweaving stories of an expat family, a long-lost brother, and a housekeeping staff-turned-ayi, isn‘t confusing at all, and instead is a confident study of contrasts and an exciting debut.

JacqMac That is a surprising fact. Who knew? 6y

Exhausted after a long week capped off by a busy as fuck Friday at work, and my brain is just like WE CAN HAZ SLEEPS NOW PLS? so I‘ll just say this is a beautifully written story about family and secrets and what it means to get or not get what you think you want. This novel turned out to have much more substance than I first thought it would. After reading Crazy Rich Asians I was concerned that it would be another light read about the ultra rich. What We Were Promised explored much more of the history of China and how that history impacts today. I would be curious to read more of Lucy Tan's work.

I loved this quiet novel centered around a Chinese couple who return to China after living in the U.S. for several years. Beautiful writing and great character development. Themes of family obligation vs. autonomy, love, loss, and identity. If you like Janice Y. K. Lee‘s novels, you should definitely pick up this one. (And if you haven‘t read Janice Y. K. Lee, you should get on that!)

CouronneDhiver Sounds kind of similar to a book I read recently: 6y

I enjoyed reading this look at modern Chinese culture. There is an Upstairs/Downstairs aspect to this story and I felt like it was mostly a deep look into society in Shanghai. But the backstory of all of the characters I also found captivating. And there are a couple of left turns in the plot that kept things stirred up, even though it is over all a quiet novel.

My first signing last night at a Barnes & Noble was a good one 😃 Felt like I was waiting so long for this to come out!!

Lucy Tan was a joy. And Rumaan Alam slowly teased out all the good stuff. She was inspired by her own experience being raised in the US and relocating to China with her parents just after she graduated from college. She says in America she feels so Chinese and in China so American. It looks like it‘s going to be a great read.
