The Greatest Love Story Ever Told
The Greatest Love Story Ever Told: An Oral History | Nick Offerman, Megan Mullally
At last, the full story behind Megan Mullally and Nick Offerman's epic romance, including stories, portraits, and the occasional puzzle, all telling the smoldering tale that has fascinated Hollywood for over a decade. The year: 2000. The setting: Los Angeles. A gorgeous virtuoso of an actress had agreed to star in a random play, and a basement-dwelling scenic carpenter had said he would assay a supporting role in the selfsame pageant. At the first rehearsal, she surveyed her fellow cast members, as one does, determining if any of the men might qualify to provide her with a satisfying fling. Her gaze fell upon the carpenter, and like a bolt of lightning, the thought struck her: No dice. Moving on. Yet, unbeknownst to our protagonists, Cupid had merely set down his bow and picked up a rocket launcher. Then fired a love rocket (not a euphemism). The players were Megan Mullally and Nick Offerman, and the resulting romance, once it ignited, was . . . epic. Beyond epic. It resulted in a coupling that has endured to this day; a sizzling, perpetual tryst that has captivated the world with its kindness, athleticism, astonishingly low-brow humor, and true (fire emoji) passion. How did they do it? They came from completely different families, endured a significant age difference, and were separated by the gulf of several social strata. Megan loved books and art history; Nick loved hammers. But much more than these seemingly unsurpassable obstacles were the values they held in common: respect, decency, the ability to mention genitalia in almost any context, and an abiding obsession with the songs of Tom Waits. Eighteen years later, they're still very much in love, and have finally decided to reveal the philosophical mountains they have conquered, the lessons they've learned, and the myriad jigsaw puzzles they've completed, in a book. Featuring anecdotes, hijinks, interviews, photos, and a veritable grab bag of tomfoolery, this is not only the intoxicating book that Mullally's and Offerman's fans have been waiting for, it might just hold the solution to the greatest threat facing our modern world: the single life.

I love Nick and Megan Offerman, and parts of this book made me laugh out loud. They really do love each other and THAT is what makes the book magical.

I‘m also a fan of both of their voices so audiobook is the way to go.

I was surprised how much I could relate to Megan and how similar we are in certain ways!

Could have done without the narration of what each picture looked like in the paperback copy, and was not a fan of the fashion talks tho.

5feet.of.fury I loved the way they play off eachother so much. I agree tho, could have done without the image descriptions 4y
Twainy I loved this audiobook! I had no idea she was so much older than him. They seem perfectly matched. 4y
Scochrane26 The audio is the best way to read this, I think. I did go back & look at the pics from a physical book at my library. 4y

#CoupleGoals #audiobooking This book features advice on making it work in Hollywood/with a significant age difference/for 2 busy working people, chronically working together on set, their family lives, being dog parents and why Nick Offerman will never wear flip flops. Performance was hilarious and you can hear the love and affection through the sarcasm and dirty jokes. Recommended for fans of either (if you don‘t mind the hotdog jokes)

About 2 hours 30 minutes in, this book is absolutely hilarious. I Recommend consuming this as an audiobook because it‘s like listening to a ridiculously hilarious, very long, conversation between comedy‘s It Couple.

Highlights include Nick referring to himself as Mr Mullally and both talking about getting their big breaks in their 30s.

My Rating: 2.5/5 (Audiobook)
I was looking forward to this one, and I wanted to love it so bad... but I found it just meh. I love Mullally and Offerman, and they seem really good together, but I found a lot of the book really redundant. It also seemed quite disorganized, and more 'train of thought' than planned out. I wasn't sure if the style was autobiographical, relationship advice, or podcast. Maybe all, but it just didn't work well together.

I'm so oblivious that I only started watching parks and rec in the last year. I did not know that they were a couple. When I read, I ask the Dot to play artists mentioned. Apparently I've never listened to Beck. That took me back to the 90s which I learned is vintage already. Right now I'm in first grade listening to Glen Campbell. So much fun to read, but I imagine it's a better audio book, except you'd miss the music...

Prairiegirl_reading The audio is great! 🤣 4y

I listened to this as an audiobook, which is probably the way to go. You get to hear Offerman & Mullally react to each other & laugh, which is a pleasure. They come across as kind, normal people who love each other & happen to have cool jobs. I wish that instead of this being a relationship book they would have written about the creative process - both together & as individuals.

I think Nick and Megan are a great couple.

I enjoyed the back and forth between the two of them in audio (though I am unsure how this would work in written format). They are truly passionate about their work and each other. I love that they have a rule where they can‘t go longer than 2 weeks without seeing each other. And that they are home bodies and just want to read, woodwork, and puzzle to audiobooks (which they then act out). ⬇️

Bookworm54 While I love them as people, I just felt it was a bit disjointed in places and didn‘t really delve as much into the relationship as I expected (in a what makes them work, early days together sort of way). I also found I preferred the one person sections at the ends of chapters as they just seemed to flow better.

I also wasn‘t a huge fan of the many sexual innuendos, though that is just a preference on my part.

Book 46: More like a podcast, the authors tell the stories from their book. The funniest chapter was one that was exclusively pictures; they humorously described each picture. They are well-spoken, with impressive vocabularies, and have an admirable relationship. They are big readers (especially Megan) and enjoy listening to books while they do puzzles; so I definitely feel an affinity towards them.

I love both Nick and Megan, and this is a quirky oral relationship history. I might not have been in the mood for a celebrity memoir, since I found the narrative boring at times.

I do 💜 that their favorite way to spend time together is listening to audiobooks while working on 🧩 puzzles. 💕💕

Nick and Megan are talking about the pure joy they experience when they are acting or working, when they don‘t realize how much time is passing because they are doing something they love & in the zone. They go on about this for awhile.

This is in the chapter on religion (or lack of it), but I‘m over here yelling at them, “you‘re talking about FLOW! Look up Mihály Csikszentmihalyi!” My psychology background is showing. ?

alisiakae Also, did Nick Offerman have a bet on how many times he could mention Wendell Berry in this book? It definitely fits with his image. 🤣 5y
Scochrane26 He wrote a chapter on Wendell Berry in Gumption & mentions him a few times in Paddle your own Canoe. Since I‘m a fangirl of Berry, it makes me like Offerman more. That‘s actually the reason I read Gumption first, besides being a Parks & Rec fan. It definitely fits his image. @4thhouseontheleft 5y
alisiakae @Scochrane26 I like Wendell Berry too, so it‘s not a complaint! 😄 5y
Scochrane26 @4thhouseontheleft I guess I didn‘t notice the mentions in this book. I have liked Gumption the best out of his books-i think because it‘s about other people. 5y

Last audiobook of 2019! I mostly enjoyed this on audio but it felt really scattered — more like a long interview about everyday topics with the occasional pre-written essay thrown in.

I truly have no idea how this book could work in print, because I think it would lose all the charm from hearing them banter.

Been a while since I updated my #nonfiction2019 board:
Bossypants by Tina Fey for something that made me laugh
Ghostland by Colin Dickey for something from another POV, this is not the usual approach to ghost stories
Tagged for something with music, listened on audio and there's actual music plus lots of discussion of how important it is to Nick and Megan
You're Not Doing It Right by Michael Ian Black for my pick - really enjoyed it on audio!

I laughed so hard. I really recommend the audiobook partly because hearing their commentary together is great, but also because you get some bonus content. It was interesting reading a memoir almost entirely about life as a couple - they pulled off that format well. Only complaint: They did a full section on fighting & how they weren't #CouplesGoals but were a bit vague about wading around in the same shit as everyone else.

They seem like two genuinely nice, talented, intelligent, hilarious people who love and respect each other and have built a wonderful and refreshingly normal relationship. I also like their takes on topics such as fashion, hobbies, and dogs. They have such great chemistry and riffed off each other constantly in the recording. A light and thoroughly enjoyable “read.”

So here's the thing, I didn't actually like the book. I didn't hate the book. It definitely falls into the so-so category. However the rapport, and possibly most of the ad-libbing between Nick and Megan made it fabulous. Part of me wants to pick up the physical book to see how much was ad-libbed, and how much was written. Made me want to listen to humor/comedy albums a la Mrs. Maisel

While it was perfectly pleasant to listen to Megan Mullally & Nick Offerman shoot the shit, I genuinely don‘t understand how this would work as a physical book. It seemed very off-the-cuff & unwritten — which is cool for a podcast or an interview series but...shouldn‘t books give the impression that they‘ve been written?

*Review cont‘d below👇🏻

monalyisha 1/4: I loved hearing about Megan‘s love for books (it‘s rampant) & I loved hearing about their clear adoration of one another (also rampant), but there were some comments that left me questioning where their editor was. (edited) 6y
monalyisha 2/4: The section in which they discuss babies — & their lack of babies — was particularly troublesome. The troubling part is not that they‘re happy with no children (I‘m all for that), but when Megan explains that they “casually” tried to have kids & did not succeed (her age, his low sperm count). She says that she‘s of the belief that if it‘s meant to happen, it will. That seemed like such a careless remark to me. (edited) 6y
Tadams4 Excellent review! So candid! 6y
See All 8 Comments
monalyisha 3/4: At one point, Nick describes his parents as participants in “benign homophobia & racism.” I get the desire to protect one‘s (very loving) parents, but “benign homophobia” & “benign racism” are NOT real things. Those beliefs always have malignant effects. Maybe “homophobia & racism based on ignorance” or “homophobia & racism without conscious maliciousness” — but that‘s *still* not benign. (edited) 6y
monalyisha 4/4: I will say that Nick & Megan both seem like my kind-of people (funny, creative, well-meaning introverts), & that I‘m now compelled to immediately seek out Nick‘s movie (“Hearts Beat Loud”) with Jeff Tweedy (who maybe just makes a cameo?), since I forgot that I needed to watch it — & Megan‘s band, “Nancy & Beth,” since it sounds like it‘s chock full of wonderful, girl-powered weirdness. (edited) 6y
sammisho I enjoyed the audio book, but you are right, there is no way that is how the book was written! 6y
monalyisha @sammisho It was bizarre! I think if it‘d been presented to me as a different beast, I would‘ve liked it more. But I still wouldn‘t have loved it. It felt honest & cute but not particularly deep or well-crafted. I didn‘t go in as a devotee of either of them, though. I liked “Parks & Rec” & thought both of their voice performances on Saunders‘ “Lincoln in the Bardo” were STELLAR. I caught the occasional ep. of “W&G” & laughed. But I was no “fan.” 6y
monalyisha @sammisho I *can* see how this might‘ve been an intentional upending of the form — an artistic, abstract experiment — but it wasn‘t for me. 6y
