Magic for Marigold | L.M. Montgomery
25 posts | 15 read | 7 to read
You Usually Hear Marigold Before You See Her. Her Laughter Always Seems to Run Ahead. Marigold Lesley doesn't think it strange at all to hold fascinating conversations with her cat. She also sees nothing wrong with having an invisible best friend who lives in the orchard. But as Marigold starts to get older, her family is hoping she'll be a little less fanciful and a little more sensible. Yet how is it possible to be sensible when you meet a girl who claims to be a princess? Or when someone mistakes you for a girl who died? For Marigold, every day brings a bit of magicand she wouldn't have it any other way. What Readers are Saying: "Wonderful! You will love Marigold." "This was my favorite L.M. Montgomery book as a kid." "I loved this book. I found myself wanting to be in Marigold's world...it sounded so wonderful."

#KindredSpiritsBuddyRead - Magic for Marigold discussion part 5

Which were your favorite episodes or chapters?
Favorite Lesley clan members?
Any quotes or descriptions that stand out to you, or anything else you‘d like to discuss?

LeahBergen I really enjoyed the last evening with Old Grandmother. Uncle Klon was a favourite of mine, too! 2y
BarbaraJean @LeahBergen That evening with Old Grandmother was one of my favorites, too—I really missed Old Grandmother! I loved both Uncle Klon and Aunt Marigold; it bothered me how Marigold‘s mother had such a hard time standing up to (Young) Grandmother, and I felt like they were a nice balance to that whole dynamic! 2y
julieclair @LeahBergen @BarbaraJean I agree about the evening with Old Grandmother. And I also loved the segment where she learned that Clementine had big feet! Aunt Marigold was my favorite Lesley. 2y

#KindredSpiritsBuddyRead - Magic for Marigold discussion part 4

What about the male friendships/acquaintances in Marigold‘s life: Hip, Billy, and Budge—even “Johnsy.” How do they contribute to Marigold‘s growth?

TheAromaofBooks Weirdly, I felt like the male characters in this story were more stereotyped than the the female. None of the guys get much page time and I didn't really connect to any of them. 2y
BarbaraJean @TheAromaofBooks They were SUCH stereotypes. But I kind of liked that because they acted as foils for Marigold, and I felt like she came out of most of those encounters having learned how better to interact with/relate to others. Hip taught her a healthy skepticism for flattery, Johnsy taught her how to handle jerks, and Budge helped her learn how to have realistic expectations for friendships as well as a bit of relating to male peers. ⤵️ 2y
BarbaraJean Although I had some issues with the tone of her “lessons learned” about Budge! It was juuuuuust a little too archaic in its attitude to women‘s roles for me. But I liked how using stereotypical males put Marigold and her perspective and her growth at the forefront, rather than using female stereotypes to center male growth! 2y
See All 6 Comments
TheAromaofBooks I agree!! And I did like how, with Budge, she learned the importance of not changing herself just to make someone happy, but the whole “I'll be here waiting for my friend whenever he decides to give me some attention“ didn't feel completely right, no matter whether said friend is a boy or a girl. I do wish that Marigold had ended up finding a genuine best girl friend close to home, too. 2y
julieclair @BarbaraJean @TheAromaofBooks I thought that all the children in the book, both boys and girls, were stereotypes. Except for Marigold, who was a very unique little girl. I agree that it would have been nice for her to have found a real true friend. Hanging around waiting for Budge to make time for her made me sad. She deserved to be more than second best. 2y
TheAromaofBooks @julieclair - I guess that was part of what made the book feel so episodic - there weren't a lot of repeat characters from chapter to chapter besides Marigold and her immediate family. While Montgomery overall does a good job of giving a character sketch in a few lines, it's still lacking substance so I never felt like anyone else was very real. 2y

#KindredSpiritsBuddyRead - Magic for Marigold discussion part 3

What do you make of Marigold‘s lack of stable, close female friendship—and the way this is contrasted with Sylvia?

What role do you think friendships play in childhood growth and development? What role does imagination play?

BarbaraJean Marigold and Sylvia reminded me so much of Anne and her imaginary friends during her neglected childhood before she came to Green Gables, and Anne‘s friendship with Diana is such a longed-for and finally realized dream for Anne. So it was fascinating to me that the circumstances of Marigold‘s imaginary playmate were so different. Sylvia does not emerge out of neglect, and Marigold often prefers her to the other girls she knows. ⤵️ 2y
BarbaraJean There are such similarities in the imaginations of both characters, yet the imaginings function very differently. I love the adults in Marigold‘s life who affirm the importance of imagination (Aunt Marigold especially), who see how important it is to Marigold, and let her grow and develop in the ways that work for her. 2y
TheAromaofBooks It was SO sad when Sylvia wasn't there any more! I had a lot of imaginary friends and pets growing up, but none that I was as attached to as Marigold was to Sylvia. I think that was part of my (mild) disappointment with the end of the book - it never felt like Marigold found her “real“ Sylvia. 2y

#KindredSpiritsBuddyRead - Magic for Marigold discussion part 2

There is a lot of strong female influence in Marigold‘s life. What positive or negative aspects of female power do you see portrayed by the female characters (either children or adults)?

BarbaraJean It made me SO mad when (Young) Grandmother refused to let Marigold use the key to the orchard door and shut her off from Sylvia. I saw so many negative examples of female power with her and the Aunt across the bay. Montgomery‘s standard unsympathetic older female relatives! I love the positive example of Aunt Marigold (gasp—a female doctor!) & the guidance she offers. Old Grandmother wields a very different kind of influence, but I loved her, too. 2y
TheAromaofBooks I thought it was very interesting how passive Marigold's mother was. I also found myself wondering how this all-female household was making a living?? 😂 2y

#KindredSpiritsBuddyRead - Magic for Marigold discussion part 1

There‘s not a strong plot here, but what do you think of Marigold as a character?

Is her growth throughout the novel realistic or relatable to you?

TheAromaofBooks I did think that her growth was believable for the most part, but I also thought that she consistently sounded older than she was. Instead of covering whatever it was, ages 7-12, I feel like she always seemed about three years older - ages 10-15ish would have made more sense to me. 2y
LeahBergen I liked Marigold better as the book went on and I got more used to the episodic nature of the storytelling. 2y
AvidReader25 Oh man, I ended up buying a house and falling off the wagon on these. I‘m sorry, but I am just not keeping up! 2y

I‘m only halfway through the book, but I‘m loving Marigold‘s adventures so much. How is everyone else‘s reading going?

LeahBergen I‘m finished and ready to chat on Saturday. 👍 2y
AnneCecilie I‘m reading a chapter a day and will be ready for Saturday 😊 2y
BarbaraJean @LeahBergen 🎉 @AnneCecilie This one works well for chapter-a-day! I‘ve been a little behind this month so I‘m doing 2 chapters a day this week, to finish in time! 2y

Cinfhen Ohhh, it‘s a bit of a #chunkster 2y
AnneCecilie @Cinfhen It doesn‘t feel that long, maybe that‘s because it‘s the final book in a fantasy quartet and I want to know how it ends 😀 2y

“Long, long ago—when she was only five and a half—Marigold had horrified her family…by saying in her nightly prayer, ‘Thank you, dear God, for ‘ranging it so that nobody knows what I think.‘ Since then Marigold had learned worldly wisdom and did not say things like that out loud—in her prayers. But she continued to think privately that God was very wise and good in making thoughts exclusively your own.”

I finished Young Mungo and read Seven Days in June

Cathythoughts Nice work 👍🏻 nice stack ⭐️ 2y
Cinfhen How was Young Mungo? How did it compare to 2y
AnneCecilie @Cinfhen I prefer Young Mungo to Shuggie Bain. I actually bailed on the physical copy of Shuggie Bain and listened on audio, and I‘m not much of an audio listener. With Young Mungo that was never an issue, it pulled me into the story. 2y

Pickpick

It's been a long time since I read this one but this month's #KindredSpiritsBuddyRead encouraged me to reread it. This one is a light pick and reading it again reminded me of why it was one I felt rather ambivalent about. The book is episodic, with each chapter its own little adventure of Marigold's. They were fun little stories but there isn't really an overarching plot to tie them together other than Marigold needing a friend. Considering ⬇️

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) I felt like Marigold's search for a friend was kind of theme of the book, I felt like the ending was a little odd. Still, I did enjoy this one. It's full of typical Montgomery tropes, including a large and rambling “clan“ and there are plenty of funny moments and adventures. Marigold herself is a likable character, although since the book ends when she is 12 she doesn't exactly have a lot of depth. This is a perfectly pleasant book but ⬇ 2y
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) definitely middle-of-the-pack for me when I'm rating Montgomery's bibliography.

Well as you can see from my #WeeklyForecast picture, the windowsill is full again! I know I say this every week, but I am still genuinely excited about every book here!! I actually finished Book Lovers yesterday and decided to send Book of Night back to the library unread since it looks like it ends on a cliffhanger and is going to be a series. That leaves Something Wilder as my only non-TBR book here, so hopefully this week's reading will ⬇️

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) “feel“ productive LOL Out of the books here, one each for February & March challenges, six for April, five for May, eight are either non-challenge TBR or the next books in series, and the rest are June prompts. I don't know why I love sorting, labeling, and planning books as much as actually reading them, but here we are! 😂 I started the tagged book last night for this month's #KindredSpiritsBuddyRead - haven't read it in YEARS so I'm ⬇ 2y
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) excited. I need to read The Sweet Life this week as it is an ARC for review, but beyond that it's back to the random number draw to decide what comes next!! Chapter-a-day books are continuing and I FINISHED Gone With the Wind yesterday!! I only had about a hundred pages left and just wanted it to be DONE! 😂 Review to follow after I'm done watering the garden. 😁 @Cinfhen I know you're looking forward to my thoughts on Scarlet 😆 2y
Read4life Let me know what you think of Something Wilder. It‘s on my TBR. I love your windowsill pic! 2y

TheAromaofBooks @Read4life - Thanks!! I have had mixed results with the Christina Lauren author duo, so I never know what to expect from one of their books 😂 But I have found enough wins from them that I always give them a chance. 2y
rabbitprincess Haha I think planning what to read is a separate hobby from actually reading (I love planning too) 🤣 2y
willaful Not starting Book of Night for that same reason. My rule with fantasy, never start until the series is finished! Also I still have tons of her YA to read. 😁 2y

I was up quite late, reading for the #WinterStormReadathon, so it was a slow start to this Sunday. A languorous shower to wake me up, a few chores around the house, & then a favourite respite of spelt wheat toast, cream cheese, avocado, & cherry tomatoes, with a twist of salt & crack of pepper. After I read for a bit, I‘ll bundle up & do a quick walk around the neighbourhood. Sunday walks are one of those simple pleasures I always look forward to.
