Girl the Sea Gave Back
Girl the Sea Gave Back | Adrienne Young
The new gut-wrenching epic from the New York Times bestselling author of Sky in the Deep. For as long as she can remember, Tova has lived among the Svell, the people who found her washed ashore as a child and use her for her gift as a Truthtongue. Her own home and clan are long-faded memories, but the sacred symbols and staves inked over every inch of her skin mark her as one who can cast the rune stones and see into the future. She has found a fragile place among those who fear her, but when two clans to the east bury their age-old blood feud and join together as one, her world is dangerously close to collapse. For the first time in generations, the leaders of the Svell are divided. Should they maintain peace or go to war with the allied clans to protect their newfound power? And when their chieftain looks to Tova to cast the stones, she sets into motion a series of events that will not only change the landscape of the mainland forever but will give her something she believed she could never have again--a home.

There are threads of an idea but it was poorly executed. It seemed the author was trying to explore the concept of fate” but it came across as a cheap plot device. Combined with a lack of world-building, poor pacing, flat characters, and predictable plot with no real purpose, this was a disappointing read. I basically skimmed most of it just to finish it & get it off my shelf.

Considering the amount of fighting in this book, it‘s weird to call it a sweet book right? But it is, it feels sweet, and makes me want to give all the characters hugs.

This is between a pick and so-so. I thought it an ok read. Waring tribes, a girl who can see the future, not liked by the people who found her as a child. A young man sees his people killed, becomes chieftain and meets the girl. Set in Nordic scenery. #books

Oh wow! Thats another interesting read that weave a unique story with mythology. Tova has lived her live not knowing why/how she can read the destiny written by the fates. Little does she know that she was chosen for something entirely different. I enjoyed watching Tova's fate unfold. I am drawn to author's who can create what feels like new worlds into old mythology.

MY RATING⇢ 3 STARS | GRADE C
The action scenes were incomparable...but they weren't enough to carry the whole story. I wanted more than what this story delivered. I wanted the romantic tension that the first book had. Instead, there were only a handful of scenes with both the main characters present.

I really enjoyed this story that follows Halvard, 10 years after Sky in the Deep.

I was pulled into the story from page one. I was really happy to be back in the world and to see what the characters were up to. I really enjoyed the intro to a new Viking clan. The only thing is I wanted more of Tova‘s people story! I feel like we barely scratched the surface with them and a book about them would be appreciated.

Guys, I loved this book! I‘m surprised it has gotten so many low reviews. I love the descriptive writing the Adrienne Young offers in her stories. I always feel like I‘m alongside the characters in the woods or along the bitter sea. I really enjoyed this one! Vikings, rune casting, female leads. All my jam.

Bookzombie I really liked Sky In The Deep and this one is on my TBR. 🙂 5y

SoManyBooksNotEnoughTime is this a sequel to Sky in the Deep? or just same author? 5y

While The Girl the Sea Gave Back didn‘t resonate with me as much as Sky in the Deep I still found it to be a worthy companion novel. Be prepared for the differences, but also try to go with the flow of what the novel is supposed to represent and I think you‘ll enjoy it. Thanks, #NetGalley, for the chance to read this one! While marketed as a standalone set in the same landscape as Sky in the Deep, I really consider this more of a sequel, though Eelyn is not the focus. The narrative has more voices & gives a more epic feel, though mainly it is split between Tova and Halvard (ten years past the events of the first book). It‘s a break in style & the ending calls for a more direct sequel. It‘s an exciting adventure!

I loved Sky in the Deep so I hate how disappointed I am in this book. I found the first part confusing but after finding my footing In the story I realized how little I cared about any of it. I was not nvested in either protagonist and most of the events were so predictable that there wasn't even enough suspense to keep me interested. I love the world that Young brings to the page but this was a miss for me.

hermyknee I felt the same way — I didn‘t even finish it 😕 5y

I was so excited to get my hands on this because I had absolutely loved Sky in the Deep. While I did like getting a glimpse into the lives of those characters after ten years, the story itself was a bit of a disappointment. It wasn‘t that I disliked it - But the pacing felt off and it took me absolutely forever to get through. I don‘t regret reading it, but it wasn‘t the follow up I was hoping for.
