Les Liaisons Dangereuses | Peirre Choderlos De Laclos
52 posts | 109 read | 52 to read
Les Liaisons Dangereuses, by Peirre Choderlos de Laclos, is part of the Barnes & Noble Classics series, which offers quality editions at affordable prices to the student and the general reader, including new scholarship, thoughtful design, and pages of carefully crafted extras. Here are some of the remarkable features of Barnes & Noble Classics: New introductions commissioned from today's top writers and scholars Biographies of the authors Chronologies of contemporary historical, biographical, and cultural events Footnotes and endnotes Selective discussions of imitations, parodies, poems, books, plays, paintings, operas, statuary, and films inspired by the work Comments by other famous authors Study questions to challenge the reader's viewpoints and expectations Bibliographies for further reading Indices & Glossaries, when appropriateAll editions are beautifully designed and are printed to superior specifications; some include illustrations of historical interest. Barnes & Noble Classics pulls together a constellation of influences-biographical, historical, and literary-to enrich each reader's understanding of these enduring works. Love . . . sex . . . seduction. Of the three, only the last matters. Love is a meaningless word, and sex an ephemeral pleasure, but seduction is an amusing game in which victory means power and the ability to humiliate one's enemies and revel with one's friends. So it is for the Vicomte de Valmont and the Marquise de Merteuil, two supremely bored aristocrats during the final years before the French Revolution. Together they concoct a wildly wicked wager: If Valmont can successfully seduce the virtuous wife of a government official, Madame deTourvel, then Madame Merteuil will sleep with him again. But Madame Merteuil also wants Valmont to conquer the young and innocent former convent schoolgirl, Cecile Volanges. Can he do both? When Les Liaisons Dangereuses was first published in 1782, it both scandalized and titillated the aristocracy it was aimed against, who publicly denounced it and privately devoured it. Today we still recognize its relevance, for what could be more contemporary than its appalling image of everyday evil - small, selfish, manipulative, and mean. Alfred Mac Adam, Professor at Barnard College-Columbia University, teaches Latin American and comparative literature. He is a translator of Latin American fiction and writes extensively on art.

Merteuil and Valmont weave increasingly elaborate schemes and affairs as they each compete for the others approval. The letters reveal so much personality but you never know if you can trust the authors‘ intentions as the stakes and consequences become increasingly severe. 8/10

I had seen some adaptations (like cruel intentions) so knew the gist of the story, but it still threw in some surprises at the end!

Two former lovers make sport of seduction. From seducing a virtuous married woman, getting a man sent to jail, and between them working to ruin a young woman before her marriage to exact revenge on the would be groom. This epistolary novel is full of seduction, scheming, revenge, and superfluous expressions of love.

This book is amazing! It makes me laugh so hard and at the same time I'm getting so into the characters - they are all impossibly cute, even when they are supposed to be repulsive or stupid! 😍
The 1988th movie is gorgeous, the cast is perfect. Malkovich and Glenn Close have so much chemistry between them ❤️ Keanu Reeves and Uma Thurman are so young and lovely 💔

This used to be one of my favorite movies, but I watch it recently, for the first time in like 10 years, and I didn't find it quite as enjoyable. Seemed more melodramatic than I remembered.

#Liaisons is another episode I had to go back and watch again because it didn't ring any bells with me. It was interesting, a nice cultural exchange. However, Picard and Anna's storyline was fairly predictable.

#StarTrekSummerMay #Liaisons @Megabooks

Megabooks And I felt they pretty much revisited the Picard part in VOY season 5 episode 13, Gravity. I didn‘t particularly enjoy that storyline in the TNG episode nor in the VOY one. I thought Troi getting sick of chocolate was a little amusing. 😝 6y

TNG 7.02 #Liaisons, or as I call it, the rapey episode. 3 alien “diplomats“ go on an expedition onto the Enterprise to experience emotions. №1 focusses on Troy and desserts (creepy), №2 focusses on anger and Worf (creepy) and №3 transforms into a female to trap and seduce Picard (CREEPY AND TRIGGERY). And they get away with it because 'they didn't know better'. I hate this episode so much. Titled after tagged, of course.

#startreksummermay #day8

Megabooks It is pretty creepy! That dude was OBSESSED with deserts. If Troi is sick of chocolate, that‘s bad!!! 6y

This is high intrigue, deception, envy, jealousy, manipulation, innocence lost, love lost at its best. One of my favorite parts is "Ce n'est pas de ma faute" letter. I still get shivers hearing John Malkovich acting this out in the movie. This is my ultimate epistolary novel. #emojinov ?

#TBRtemptation post 8! #PhillyMeetUp edition! A @valerieandbooks pick! Since this came out in 1782, it's not a recent release 😆👏🏻. It's considered one of the most scandalous and controversial novels in European literature. Vicomte de Valmont and Marquise de Marteuil form an unholy alliance and turn seduction into a game, a game to win at all costs. #blameLitsy #blameMrBook 😎

CocoReads I love that book. It's very devious and malicious. I've been meaning to reread it. 7y
MicheleinPhilly @ValerieAndBooks No lie: When I saw that table and read "All classics $5" I purposely made my eyes glaze over and quickly moved on. Too much temptation! 7y
ValerieAndBooks @CocoReads I still have my mass-market of this from 25 years ago! Always wanted to re-read but as time passed by knew I'd want a larger print copy to read from. Couldn't resist at just $5 😊! 7y

LeahBergen @Sydsavvy Awesome! 👍🏼 8y
Hobbinol Ha! My French vocabulary has evaporated over the years and now it makes my brain hurt. My copy is in English too. I meant only that I have a whole TBR shelf devoted to French lit. Sometimes I purchase books in French with English notes, but they're very hard to come by. I rarely have the opportunity to speak French in NC; in fact, it's the most unfrench place I've ever been. The colonial government even turned away a boatload of your Acadians! 8y
