Tokyo Ghoul, Volume 1
Tokyo Ghoul, Volume 1 | Sui Ishida
Ghouls live among us, the same as normal people in every way except their craving for human flesh. Ken Kaneki is an ordinary college student until a violent encounter turns him into the first half-human half-ghoul hybrid. Trapped between two worlds, he must survive Ghoul turf wars, learn more about Ghoul society and master his new powers. Shy Ken Kaneki is thrilled to go on a date with the beautiful Rize. But it turns out that she s only interested in his body eating it, that is. When a morally questionable rescue transforms him into the first half-human half-Ghoul hybrid, Ken is drawn into the dark and violent world of Ghouls, which exists alongside our own."

Some of the teens at my library recommended this horror manga to me and I'm so glad they did! This first volume opens with a bang. Ghouls live among humans, but must eat human flesh to survive. But what happens if someone is half human, half ghoul?

Love the action and the characters so far. Plus, the artwork is really well done.

This should have been my cup of tea. The ghouls are non-human creatures that eat human flesh. This reminds of vampires and I love Buddy and The Vampire Diaries. So I‘m not sure what happens, but I won‘t rush to read the next volumes.

Tokyo Ghoul was not at all my jam, but that's a me problem. It did fill the Manga Horror prompt for the #NoShameReadathon23 , which was the point!

I've wanted to check this out for so long. I've watched a few episodes of the anime and from what I can tell.. pretty similar. Lots of blood and moral dilemmas for poor Ken. The next volume I put on hold and gotta waaait 😭

BehindthePages I loved the first two seasons of this, but the third threw me for a loop and I haven't been back. 3y
night_shift @BehindthePages huh.. well we'll see! I'm really bad with completing series, so I may not even get to that problem lol 3y

Hey Litsy! My son is in 7th grade and loves Tokyo Ghoul and Demon Slayer. However, he‘s feeling like reading a novel because he burns through the mangas so fast. He needs a book for free reading time at school. Any suggestions?

Karisa Hey @Littlewolf1 I think you‘d mentioned you love Tokyo Ghoul too. Any ideas for him? 😅 3y
wanderinglynn Based on the synopsis for both series, I‘d recommend urban fantasy/paranormal books, of which there are many. Maybe Jim Butcher‘s Dresden Files. 3y
TheBookHippie I don‘t know however I do know this was in most of the kids please get this in classroom (7/8 grade) Loki: Where Mischief Lies (Marvel Universe YA, 1) and (edited) 3y

TheBookHippie The kiddos that read that genre I mean. 🙃 3y
Karisa @wanderinglynn @TheBookHippie He‘s definitely intrigued by Taro and the Dresden Files. Ordering both along with a collection of Japanese folktales because i can always use good books in my classroom when he‘s done with them! Thank you both so much 🥰 3y
Littlewolf1 I would go with Anna Dressed in Blood, Rot and Ruin, Asylum, The Tenth Girl or even This Savage Song was not bad. Some of these are pretty gruesome, but they are all YA horror… do you wants some older recommendations? (edited) 3y
Karisa @Littlewolf1 Thank you! Those sound great! I knew you would have some good ideas for us! 💗 3y
Littlewolf1 @Karisa hope you find something he loves 3y

57 of 2021. Day 2 and book 2 for #awesomeapril . Ken Kaneki is a student who barely survives a deadly encounter where his date reveals herself as a ghoul and tries to eat him. He is taken to the hospital in critical condition. After recovering, Kaneki discovers that he underwent a surgery that transformed him into a half-ghoul. I really enjoyed this so I will continue this manga. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Elizabeth2 My daughter and my niece (15 & 16) watched this show. They loved it. They would snuggle on the couch together during football games this past year (my brother‘s family was part of our safe circle) and giggle and squeal as they watched. They were adorable, and I loved that they shared their love of anime and manga. ❤️ 4y
DarkMina @Elizabeth2 That is awesome. My niece loves anime. Tokyo Ghoul is one of her favorites. A couple years ago they had a movie out so of course I took her to see it. She recommended I read the manga. 4y

My new introduction to Tokyo Ghoul, sure was cool! With this digital read, I'll plan eventually for picking up the 1 again, & book 2 also, at bookstores in the future; seeing if these keep me interested for more. 💀☕️

This was my first time reading Manga, it was recommended to me by a friend. Its not something I would ever of thought I would have enjoyed as I don't usually like animation or comics etc. So I was really surprised at just how much I enjoyed reading this for both the story itself and the artwork. I loved it and am looking forward to reading the other books in this series and also trying some more Manga.

TheLibrarian I haven‘t read the manga yet but love the anime show! 4y
phantomx @Nicki_K Tokyo Ghoul is amazing, and a great starter as a manga series. The manga artist adds in beautiful intricate detail to the clothing in the manga and certain accessories. 4y

I Just Love the Anime!!! No Surprise Loving the Manga As Well😀
Tokyo Ghoul Attracts Me Because It's Not like any other Horror - action Animes/Manga.
It's Emotionally Resonant and has a serious psychological depth to it. Kaneki 's struggle to adapt and fight through all the obstacles as the only member having equal access to both the Human & Ghoul World is just breathtaking.
And Then There is 'Unravel', the OP of the Anime. Just Damn Good✌

“We‘re gonna talk about our favorite books. It‘s my first ever outing with a girl. On top of that, it‘s the bookstore date of my dreams!! I‘m so happy I can die right now!”

Manga on Kindle - Ooo, pretty good 👍 This is dangerous. I cannot like it too much though because I still love the feel (and collection) of physical books 📚 ❤️😉

Sace My biggest struggle. Manga on Kindle saves so much space but physical manga is soooo nice. 7y

I loved it! Having watched the anime, I knew the storyline, but I love the supernatural aspect as well as the emotion in this story. The art is great, although sometimes a little unclear, but it‘s still eerie and adds to the overall mood of the series. Very easy to read and the flow is perfect. Starting Volume 2 immediately!!

You know how sometimes you go on a date with a cute young woman and she takes a bite out of your shoulder and when you try to run she skewers you with her "claws" and then after some steel beams fall on her you're rescued but her kidneys are transplanted into you and you learn you're now some kind of human-ghoul hybrid? No? Me neither. But wow is it fun to read about it. There's action, wacky humor, violence, a clueless eighteen year old etc.
