Book two completed in my Salinger reread and once again I liked this better now than when I first read it. I understand the nuances of his stories better. As with all short story collections, some stories are better than others. My favorites are Teddy, A Perfect Day for Bananafish and Uncle Wiggily in Connecticut.

I finished what should have been my last #storyaday2023 book at my son's hockey practice this morning. It was one of the best collections (if not the absolute best) I read this year. Fingers crossed that I'll catch up and finish today, but I have 12 and a half Akutagawa stories to go...

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Some of the most perfect short stories you‘ll ever read. “Bananafish,” “For Esme,” Uncle Wiggily,” and so on. Salinger‘s dialogue, realistic detail, and ability to effectively portray PTSD before it was widely discussed and accepted is incredibly perceptive. It‘s not a fast read. Salinger‘s published body of work is so small, you must savor it. #reread

LiteraryinPA It‘s been years since I read this compilation (maybe over ten) and some of the stories still stick with me. Teddy and Bananafish for sure. 3y
AshleyHoss820 I absolutely concur. Short story perfection. Bananafish continually comes into my mind. Just fantastic writing in this volume. 3y

EclecticBookLover I read some of these in high school. Only Bananafish and Teddy ring a bell. I don't remember enjoying them too much (probably because it was assignedreading), but I've thought about them and think I may need to revist them. They are the only things I've read by Salinger. Catcher is on my TBR. 3y
britt_brooke @EclecticBookLover I always had bad luck with assigned reading. 😂 Btw, Catcher is one of my all-time favorites. My husband and I even named one of our sons Holden. I hope when you get around to it that it‘s a good reading experience. 🤞🏼 3y

In honor of kicking off our #thatsclassic book club I thought it might be nice to gift someone a copy of the classic of their choice.

Comment a classic that inspired your love for literature and tag a friend and I‘ll enter you to win!

Before I fell for Austen, Bronte or Gaskell, Salinger had my 14 yr old angsty heart. I was all in from the minute I walked the NYC streets with Holden and worked through the emotional turmoil of the Glass family.

Annie1215 I‘ll pick a winner Monday! 4y
KVanRead Oh how I loved Salinger but discovered him a bit later. When I was 12, my sister gifted me a boxed set of Pride and Prejudice and Sense and Sensibility and those were my first grown up books and began a lifelong love of classics. @LeahBergen what was your first classic? 4y
erzascarletbookgasm Not entering but just to say I enjoyed Nine Stories. 👍 4y

LeahBergen @KVanRead Ohhhh! I really had to think about this one and then realized it was most definitely Jane Eyre. A friend of mine gave me an abridged edition when I was 11-years-old, and (when I found out what “abridged” meant) I had to have a copy of the “real” book. 😂😂 How about you, @rubyslippersreads ? (edited) 4y
Lyssa131330 Jane Eyre! I read a summary as a child on a school exam and spent a few years trying to figure out what the full story was called. It was one of the first books I bought myself. What about you guys? @LapReader @thegreensofa @JeffyRoo 4y
rubyslippersreads @LeahBergen @KVanRead @Lyssa131330 Definitely Jane Eyre. I read my mom‘s BOTM copy at about age 10 (the edition with the Fritz Eichenberg woodcuts). 4y
rubyslippersreads P. S. I‘m not entering either, but it‘s nice of you to share with fellow Littens. 😊 4y
LeahBergen Oh, and I‘m not entering to win (this house is crammed full of classics like @rubyslippersreads is, too, I‘m sure 😂) but it‘s such a fun question! (edited) 4y
KVanRead @LeahBergen @rubyslippersreads ❤️Jane Eyre - saw the movie as a kid but didn‘t actually read it until my 20‘s 4y
JeffyRoo @Lyssa131330 @LapReader @thegreensofa mine was Pride and Prejudice. A friend of the family started reading it to me when she stayed one time. I didn't understand a lot of it that first time but it stuck in my head. 4y
thegreensofa @Lyssa131330 @JeffyRoo for me definitely the Picture Of Dorian Gray, such gorgeous writing and a great story, and it still stands the harsh test of time. Poor poor Dorian, he was such a fool. 4y

I haven‘t read any Salinger since I was 17, had just been dumped, and Holden Caulfield just understood how everyone at my school was a phoney... I enjoyed this tho! Very well crafted short stories particularly For Esme With Love and Squalor, which was more tender than I was expecting, and delightfully American - very escapist for this English girl. Minus some points for how he made references to native Americans 🤢

When Salinger saw this seductive pulp cover on his book (based on one of the short stories in this collection), he blew his top. Especially since his character Esme was a 7-year-old girl! From then on, rumor has it that J.D. added a mandatory clause in every publishing contract: nothing but a text title and his name could be on the cover-front or back-of any of his books. And absolutely no images. Who knew!

These are 9 stories with assortment of characters who are desperate, lonely, ignorant and heartbreaking. The stories are mostly episodes of happenings in a day, save for one which is a story within a story but all deal with human relationships, death, effects of war. They‘re heavily dialogued and endings are abrupt. Each story is powerful & worth reading but my favourites-A Perfect Day For Bananafish, For Esme, Pretty Mouth & Green Eyes and Teddy.

I think Salinger is one of those writers that if you read his work without knowing it was written by him you could guess it was his writing - very distinctive. The dialogue in this is real and so well written with interruptions and repetitions, and all the characters really come to life in just a few pages. Every story is good. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Good night from my elves (and reindeer) to you!!

Felicia is reading Nine Stories. Finley is reading Murder on the Orient Express. Spike is reading The Woman Who Rides Like a Man.
Literal and literary elf on a shelf. Is it a thing? It should be a thing. 😂 📚 🎄

Hitting another slump 🙈 I don't know what is going on at the moment but I do have some reviews to post! In the mean time I'm going to try some short stories from an author I love to try and ignite the spark again!

Rachbb3 That's exactly what I did to get out of my slump and it worked. 7y
