Eat A Peach: A Memoir | David Chang
73 posts | 53 read | 42 to read
David Chang writes about a chefs life in a way that feels completely fresh. The recipes, including those from the ginger-scallion noodles and roasted pork belly served at Noodle Bar, are almost perks; this would be a great read even without them. The New York Times Ever since I slurped my first Momofuku ramen bowl, I knew David Chang was a special chef. Now, with this soulful memoir, David has added another feather to his cap: brilliant writer. David is a personal hero - funny, wise, humble, and self-aware. With Eat a Peach, he puts words to so many of the things we all feel, sharing generously of his own journey so we can all benefit in the process. Chrissy Teigen, New York Times bestselling author of Cravings In 2004, Momofuku Noodle Bar opened in a tiny, stark space in Manhattans East Village. Its young chef-owner, David Chang, worked the line, serving ramen and pork buns to a mix of fellow restaurant cooks and confused diners whose idea of ramen was instant noodles in Styrofoam cups. It would have been impossible to know it at the timeand certainly Chang would have bet against himselfbut he, who had failed at almost every endeavour in his life, was about to become one of the most influential chefs of his generation, driven by the question, What if the underground could become the mainstream? Chang grew up the youngest son of a deeply religious Korean American family in Virginia. Graduating college aimless and depressed, he fled the States for Japan, hoping to find some sense of belonging. While teaching English in a backwater town, he experienced the highs of his first full-blown manic episode, and began to think that the cooking and sharing of food could give him both purpose and agency in his life. Full of grace, candour, grit, and humour, Eat a Peach chronicles Changs switchback path. He lays bare his mistakes and wonders about his extraordinary luck as he recounts the improbable series of events that led him to the top of his profession. He wrestles with his lifelong feelings of otherness and inadequacy, explores the mental illness that almost killed him, and finds hope in the shared value of deliciousness. Along the way, Chang gives us a penetrating look at restaurant life, in which he balances his deep love for the kitchen with unflinching honesty about the industrys history of brutishness and its uncertain future. Eat a Peach is an intimate account of the making of a chef, the story of the modern restaurant world that he helped shape, and how he discovered that success can be much harder to understand than failure.

I don‘t know why I liked this so much, but I did! The restaurant industry is messed up and DC touches on so much of it. Hopefully things are slowly but surely changing. Great read! (39)

I had previously seen chef David Chang of Momofuku fame on one of the shows he did, where he seemed affable and easy-going. It was a real shock to read this memoir and get a glimpse of a complicated, driven individual who has struggled to understand the depression and rage that have driven him throughout his career, sometimes at great cost. He seems genuinely baffled by his own success and the strokes of good fortune that saved him at key moments.

5feet.of.fury I bought this one for my boyfriend because we always watch cooking shows and stuff and he‘s a big fan. I don‘t think either of us ever read it, I should try to figure out what he did with it 2y

Hard not to draw parallels between books by Korean American iconoclastic chefs, having just read Buttermilk Graffiti, but David Chang's is much more straightforwardly a memoir.
For all that it starts out with moments from his childhood and follows a rough chronology, there's something breathless and frenetic in the structure that makes sense when you realize exactly how passionate, how historically-fed-by-choas this personality is. 1/?

Robotswithpersonality I am flabbergasted by some of the nitty-gritty and serendipitous details, and impressed by the level of vulnerability and accountability present, particularly in the chapters 'Thirty-Five' and 'Blind Spot'. 2/? 2y
Robotswithpersonality It's clear that Chang is in the ongoing process of not simply managing his mental health and dealing with internalized racism, but also the external forces of societal stigma surrounding discussions of mental health and related treatment/medication, and the racism he has experienced at different stages in his life. Not to mention whatever toxic masculinity/cultural baggage he may have picked up from his father/male mentors of earlier generations. 2y
Robotswithpersonality Some may argue the bar is still too low, but I find it incredibly encouraging to see a man be so open about acknowledging faults, striving for growth and owning the ongoing process of improvement rather than proclamation of perfection. 4/? 2y
See All 6 Comments
Robotswithpersonality I am honestly repelled by the traditional, abusive, restaurant hierarchy as related in his early education, and can only hope that his more open, communicative, tolerant, team-focused approach is inspiration for industry-wide overhaul. 5/? 2y
Robotswithpersonality Without sharing the kind of single-minded, frankly unhealthy, drive that started Momofuku's empire, it's hard for me to relate to Chang's journey and choices, but I'm relieved to see him end the book seemingly in a much better place than it started, a more balanced life for himself, a better example set and better conditions for his employees.
Hurray for therapy! 6/7

Robotswithpersonality ⚠️ Alcohol and drug abuse, drug overdose, suicidal ideation, mental health discussions (depression, bipolar disorder, manic episodes, emotional dysregulation), internalized mental health stigma, racism, internalized racism, misogyny 7/7 2y

March 30, 2023 Im basically done with this book. I would give this book a 4/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️. The writing is pretty good. There are some slow points in the book but the storytellling aspect is good. Give this a read if you enjoy memoirs.

March 30, 2023 On page 200 out of 263. I have been loving how David Chang writes. He probably will be a new author that I read more of in the future. But so far, his writing has been a rollercoaster ride for me. He has been through ups and downs his whole life. Despite that, he tries to do the best he can as a chef. Something humorous is that he named his fast food restaurant Fuku; a riff on Momofuku for everyone who took him for granted

March 29, 2023 I probably read the most depressing chapter of the book. The chapter is titled Thirty Five. During this time, David Chang was working in a restaurant called Seiōbo. This was a time that he dreaded and wished he could have experienced differently. Many people close to him (mom, dad, friend, and another friend) had been ill or died. Mom had a tumor in her brain, dad had liver cancer, and his two friends died due to separate issues.

March 29, 2023 Part Two: DOWN AND BACK AGAIN Wow Listers... before I read the second half, I feel like it will be going deeper into the manic episodes and emotions that David Chang felt but did not talk about in Part One. Part One mainly covered his experiences and travels around world with cooking. It also talked about how he was influenced by the chefs he met.

March 28, 2023 I am on page 116 of the book. On page 115, David Chang shares a life lesson: "If you hold on too tightly to what you have, it'll only hurt more once it's gone, and from an early age, I've had an overwhelming fear that it can all be taken away." This can happen to anyone in any field they pursue; especially if it is a job that you like a lot!

March 26, 2023 Before my Spring Break begins, I will give a update on the book. I am on page 60 out of 286. It has been very interesting because 1) I love food and I love reading memoirs with food in them AND 2) I feel like this man, David Chang, had a hard life as a Korean American growing up with a brother and parents who did not really take care of him well when he was younger. He was not that close with his mom but he was close with his dad

#12BooksOf2022

When I went to make my July pick, I realized I didn‘t finish a single book that month. I was off excavating so not totally—but definitely a little—surprising work kept me busy. So, here are 3 favorite covers instead. The tagged book is a fascinating memoir with a cover that says a lot. I liked the UK cover of Lessons in Chemistry so much I had to have it & Fire Keeper‘s Daughter is just very cool.

Finished this a few days ago, and I did enjoy it overall. The focus is much more on his mental health, and less on food, than I was expecting. Which isn't a criticism.

Time to catch up on his Netflix shows.

I‘ve read everything by David Chang and watched all of his shows. But until I moved to Vegas I really didn‘t have a chance to enjoy one of his restaurants. Until today. My husband promised me that once things calmed down and we recovered from the move it would be the treat of all treats. And tonight I cashed in that chit and we went to Majordomo. I couldn‘t eat another bite if I tried.

The rage displayed by David Chang towards his employees in this book made me so uncomfortable. I would have bailed, but this is the book I picked for a work book club. Giving a so-so because I do look forward to talking about it with my co-workers. Also the food sound delicious.

This is going to be a long one. Bear with me.

I decided to read this book *purely* based on the cover art & clever title. I knew it was a memoir about a chef. I had no idea who David Chang was. I didn‘t know his name was, as he admits (shamefacedly), “synonymous with rage.” And because I lacked foreknowledge about his notoriety or his career in general, I also didn‘t much care about the intricacies of how his various restaurants rose to fame.👇🏻

monalyisha 1/10: Here‘s my “takeaway” (ha; it‘s a food pun!): Chang is at his best & most passionate when he‘s exposing the racist underbelly of the culinary experience in America. One small example of the sort of details he brings to light is when he points out that handmade Italian “pasta” dishes can be priced high, while “noodles” — no matter the skill, time, or ingredients put into making them — are expected to be priced low. (edited) 4y
monalyisha 2/10: I said earlier that I didn‘t much care about how his restaurants made their way in the world; the exception to this is the chapter on Fuku, & how he treated his vision like concept art rather than a restaurant (the vision being to highlight the racist stereotypes against Asians; the wrappers on his chicken sandwiches read “Dericious” & there were Asian “villains” & fools from pop culture decorating the walls. Sadly, nobody noticed or cared). (edited) 4y
monalyisha 3/10: David Chang is a smart man. And he‘s transparent. But he‘s *not* an easy personality. At one point, he reflects, “Nobody wants to eat dinner with a dick.” Well. Here‘s how I really feel: nobody wants to read almost 300 pages narrated by a dick, either. (edited) 4y
See All 15 Comments
monalyisha 4/10: Fortunately, therapy and an executive coach he hired at age 35 (whose forte he describes as “help[ing] assholes realize they‘re assholes”) have helped considerably in making him act — or at least *think* (if he can‘t quite control his actions yet) — like less of a dick. (edited) 4y
monalyisha 5/10: They seem to have helped him to begin to deal with his rage issues, emotional dysregulation (which “usually accompanies another condition like PTSD or borderline personality disorder” & manifests as something akin to “a state of temporary psychosis”), poor mental health, & all around bad habits & practices. This gradual evolution makes the last chunk of the book a little more palatable. (edited) 4y
monalyisha 6/10: Still, Chang writes “the only mistake is not to learn from your errors,” which isn‘t exactly true. The past errors still exist.

And the fact is, Chang, as a person, isn‘t “done” yet. Really, who is? But it feels sharper with him.
(edited) 4y
monalyisha 7/10: He reminds me of that scene from Buffy when she describes herself as being cookie dough; she‘s not quite cookies yet. Or the one from Casper, when the Lazarus Machine is interrupted & he‘s left existing in some ambiguous state between ghost & human; he‘s depicted as a wiggly egg with a runny yolk & one eye sliding down his face. He asks, “Am I alive?” (edited) 4y
monalyisha 8/10: Chang is honest about how he asks himself almost the same, exact question — especially when he‘s in the throes of a depressive episode. But he isn‘t as friendly as Casper. And he‘s not a feminist icon like Buffy. He‘s just a chef, not a “God [of food or otherwise].” Still (if he can be believed...and I‘m not about to research him further to know, so I‘ll take his word for now), he‘s trying. And that does count for something. (edited) 4y
monalyisha 9/10: Reading this back to myself, I realize that this review feels a bit cruel. I‘m comforted to know that David Chang won‘t ever see it (as much as I personally love Litsy, I don‘t think it‘s quite achieved that level of influence or visibility). But as a reader, I want you to know: if you aren‘t a true gourmand or if you lack experience working in the restaurant industry, this may not be the book for you. It wasn‘t exactly the book for me. (edited) 4y
monalyisha 10/10: HOWEVER — the epilogue has a fucking *perfect* ending. It‘s exactly the juicy, shining moment that the title led me to expect. And moments are important. (edited) 4y
Crazeedi Wow what a great review, and fyi the title has me remembering my youth because one of the albums we listened to was "Eat a Peach" by Allman brothers!! 4y
monalyisha @Crazeedi Yes! 💯 (The name of his restaurant, Momofuku, means “lucky peach.”) And thank you for the compliment! 😊 (edited) 4y

This footnote tells me that I am not the intended audience for this book. 😅

Do I *know* who Nathan Fillion is?! He presumes the answer (from his readers) is “no.” Listen: as a rabid Buffy fan, OF-FUCKING-COURSE I know who Nathan Fillion is. 😂

Now...did I know who David Chang was before the cover & title of his memoir lured me in? Hard no.

julesG Same as you. Just googled Chang. But have no problem coming up with roles NF played. 😁😁 4y
Palimpsest I wish that Firefly had been on longer than one season. 4y
monalyisha @Palimpsest I know a lot of friends who share your deep sense of tragedy! For me, Nathan Fillion is Caleb/“The Preacher.” The space-western vibe of Firefly didn‘t do as much for me as the Bildungsroman-monsters dynamic of Buffy. But I know Firefly is much beloved! And it would be wrong to say that I didn‘t enjoy it. 4y

Lindy I hadn‘t heard of Nathan Fillion. I didn‘t bother looking him up when I read Chang‘s memoir. Am I the intended reader? Maybe, because I felt more empathy for Chang after reading his life story. Not a lot of empathy, but some. 4y
TheKidUpstairs 🤣🤣🤣 I'm with you. Do I know who Nathan Fillion is?! I'm almost insulted by the question! 4y
TheKidUpstairs @paulfrankspencer I rewatch it every couple of years. Buffy too. 4y
Scochrane26 Nathan Fillion was also on Castle for years, so many non-geeks know who he is, too. I say geeks because I‘m one. I think what the author is assuming is that people don‘t have a wide array of interests, but we all know that a lot of people do. 4y
rubyslippersreads I certainly know who Nathan Fillion is, but have never heard of David Chang before this post. 4y
The_Penniless_Author I'm the reverse- I knew who David Chang is, but not Nathan Fillion, beyond a name I might have heard mentioned once or twice. 4y
ShelleyBooksie Team Nathan! 4y
monalyisha @Lindy The verdict is still out for me but I‘m operating from a place of total ignorance re: his life, demeanor, etc. All I have is his story. My empathy was high toward the beginning but I‘m just now learning about his rage. I thought the parts about what dining was like in the 90‘s vs. now (& the way “ethnic food” featured into the bias against affordable, quality dining) was super interesting. Learning about his various restaurants? Less so. 4y
monalyisha @TheKidUpstairs YES. @Scochrane26 True! Although, it was meant to be a little tongue-in-cheek so I won‘t hold it against him too much. 😉 4y
RamsFan1963 As a Buffy/Firefly/Castle fan, of course I know Nathan Fillion's work well, much better than this chef guy. 4y

It‘s not just about the restaurant industry and not just for foodies. It‘s about Chang‘s struggle with mental health and his very earnest desire to identify and overcome his shortcomings. I took a detour from the audiobook to watch Ugly Delicious ( season2) and a few episodes of Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner. Good decision😉Through the Netflix series I was able to get a fuller picture of David Chang. David is definitely a larger than life presence. He‘s gregarious, quick witted, amiable but also manic and short tempered. And in raw honesty, David shares his dark side alongside his openness and eagerness to please and create. 👇🏼

Cinfhen I loved this audiobook read by David. He details his successes and failures, taking responsibility for all that has evolved over his first days of opening Momofuku, Noodle Bar. His final chapter offers good solid advice for anyone looking to start a business and the need for education. #Pop21 #SetInARestaurant #Booked21 #ColorInTitle #NonFictionChallege21 #WrittenByPersonOfColor 4y

I see so many others who have been in the profession for years and refuse to change their lessons, strategies, etc. I'll do my best to always accept critical feedback and be self-reflective. I don't want to be complacent.

The bookmark was an unplanned but ironic addition to our waiting room book supply. 😂 Anyone else hate going for an oil change? I'm always worried they're going to yell at me for something. 😢

MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm Has your mechanic actually yelled at you? 😱 I‘d maybe look for a new mechanic. 😅 I do understand the stress of not wanting them to find anything else wrong though. 4y
Rachel.Rencher @MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm Not the one I go to now, but yes I've been harshly spoken to by them before. One even popped my tire then blamed me for it. This one is good, but I still don't like it. 😂 4y
MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm Oh my! 😠 I‘ve had a few run ins with rude mechanics, but to be blamed for something like that? 😤 I hope your current one continues to be okay. It‘d be nice to have someone that one trusts work on the giant hunk of metal one drives at high speeds daily. 😅 4y

Mrs_B One of my all time favourite tweets might make you smile! “Going with a female friend to get her car MOT'd.
I love this. We do it every year. They ignore her entirely and talk to me, since I'm A Man. I know nothing about cars.
She, however, was for many years the Chief Mechanic of a Formula One racing team.

She will pick her moment.”

If you dare to eat a peach, you are willing to accept the outcome, knowing full well that you can always change your shirt. Much like the dichotomies of life, a peach is both sweet and sour, soft and hard, smooth and fuzzy. 🍑

Clare-Dragonfly I have heard the mermaids singing, each to each… 4y

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Memoir + Momofuku. Chang‘s narration is causal, smart, and at times, brash. It felt like watching an extended episode of Ugly Delicious. Among other profound points, he openly discusses mental health struggles, owning mistakes, and enduring cultural appropriation. I cried when he spoke of his friendship with Bourdain; the loss still so raw. The culinary world seems like another universe. Memoir builds empathy. It‘s why I love the genre.

Cinfhen So #Stacked !!!! Keep the reviews coming 🧡🧡🧡I have a feeling @KarenUK and @Megabooks might be interested too 4y
ValerieAndBooks I thought I had this stacked already, but it is now!! 4y

KarenUK Thanks for the tag @Cinfhen ! Definitely the kind of memoir I love.... And I 😍 that gorgeous cover 💕 #stacked 4y
britt_brooke @KarenUK I‘m in love with the cover! 🤩 4y
britt_brooke @Megabooks Glad to know it‘s just as good in print, too! I got the hardcover for my husband for Christmas, but decided to borrow the audio from the library myself. I think he‘s going to like it. He‘s reading Pappyland now ... and thinks the author inserted himself into the story so much just for page count. He might be on to something. 😂 4y
Megabooks Lololol! Truth!! I think he‘ll like David more. 4y
emilyhaldi Thanks for bringing this to my attention!! We (my husband especially) love Momofuku & all things David Chang!! Yet I didn‘t know he had a book... definitely need to buy this one 😁 4y
britt_brooke @emilyhaldi It‘s a great one! My husband and I recently started watching Ugly Delicious and love him! Maybe one day we‘ll get to one of his restaurants. 4y
Megabooks @Cinfhen thank you for thinking of me though! 😘 4y
BarbaraBB I went to a restaurant called Momofuku in Toronto last year.. I didn‘t realize that David Chang is a famous chef 🙈 4y
britt_brooke @BarbaraBB He‘s been well-known for a long time, but I didn‘t realize it until recently. 😂 4y
BarbaraBB Fortunately I‘m not the only one 😂 4y
Cinfhen I had a feeling you already read it @Megabooks I vaguely remember that now!!! I‘m so mad I didn‘t buy it awhile back / it was on sale for Prime Day 😡but hubby was being annoying about my book spending 🤬I‘m sure I‘ll be able to find a copy through my library or subscription services 4y
Cinfhen I know my customers @KarenUK @Megabooks and now im gonna use this book for #pop21 #AbookMyBestFriendWouldLike 💚💚💚😊😘 4y
Cinfhen Of course you‘re included in that prompt too, Britt 😘😘 4y
Megabooks @Cinfhen lol re: books. I understand. I have to meet the postal worker at the door to sneak in my packages! Enjoy Peach. It‘s a good book. 4y
Cinfhen Hahaha/ you‘re a grown woman hiding packages from your parents @Megabooks my parents always make comments about my spending too!!! It‘s SOOOOOOO ANNOYING 🙄some things never change 4y
Megabooks @Cinfhen right?!? Just so bizarre. Sometimes my mom says, but you can‘t read them all. I don‘t think she gets the point!! 😂😂 4y
emilyhaldi Loving this conversation 🤣🤣 @Megabooks @Cinfhen luckily I‘ve been leaning into library loans lately, so my husband can‘t complain about that 😉 4y
britt_brooke @emilyhaldi @Cinfhen @Megabooks So many kids‘ books come into this house, I think my husband has just given up and pretends not to notice. 😂🙈 I use the library for about half of my reads, so that‘s my justification. 😆 (edited) 4y
Cinfhen I REALLY REALLY REALLY miss my local Philly library @britt_brooke @emilyhaldi and hubby knows it BUT every so often he gets a little peeved when my book spending exceeds the monthly groceries 😁whatev. #DealWithIt 4y
britt_brooke @Cinfhen 😂😂 They really don‘t have a choice. 4y

Mehso-so

I appreciate the honest and raw truth the author shared about his growing pains, self struggles, and career crisis battling in the food industry. I appreciate his vulnerability of owning his identity and the journey of growing to be a better person thru some darkness. You won‘t know who David Chang really is and what his personal story is about, thru that always energetic and smiley “facade” in his Netflix food shows, until this book.

Apparently I'm into memoirs. I'm rarely disappointed after reading one, and I wasn't with this one either. I didn't know much about David Chang prior to reading this, but I plan to watch his Netflix show and look up his restaurants. There's much about his early career, things he's learned as a chef, and also about his struggles with mental illness. I listened to the #audiobook narrated by the author which was well done.

Clare-Dragonfly I‘m not interested in this book but I do appreciate the nod to Eliot in the title! 4y
Amor4Libros I love David Chang and the agree that the book was excellent! I‘m reading Kitchen Confidential by Bourdain now and loving it, also. 4y
