So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish (Bound for Schools & Libraries)
So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish (Bound for Schools & Libraries) | Douglas Adams
Back on Earth with nothing more to show for his long, strange trip through time and space than a ratty towel and a plastic shopping bag, Arthur Dent is ready to believe that the past eight years were all just a figment of his stressed-out imagination. But a gift-wrapped fishbowl with a cryptic inscription, the mysterious disappearance of Earth's dolphins, and the discovery of his battered copy of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy all conspire to give Arthur the sneaking suspicion that something otherworldly is indeed going on. . . .God only knows what it all means. And fortunately, He left behind a Final Message of explanation. But since it's light-years away from Earth, on a star surrounded by souvenir booths, finding out what it is will mean hitching a ride to the far reaches of space aboard a UFO with a giant robot. But what else is new?

This was my least favourite of the series so far.It was the first that the author wrote as a novel and more or less he lazed his way through it until his editor locked him in a room and forced him to finish it. It shows xD He had the set up of the story, the questions he was going to ask and answer, where the story was going to finish, but the story goes wherever it wants to go and Douglas Adams seems to have no control over it. ⬇️

nanuska_153 Still made me laugh at loud, but it's definitely the weakest of the series. 12mo

#Two4Tuesday @TheSpineView

1. Driving back to PA to have dinner with my parents and see some of my extended family.

2. Maybe it's recency bias, but French Exit in a way - the odd, cobbled-together group of friends and family gathering for one final party, reveling in each other's company even as they've descended into material ruin. There's a strain of gratitude beneath all the barbs.

#wondrouswednesday @Eggs

1. Almost too many to pick just one, but since I'm looking at Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy right now I'll just say Zaphod Beeblebrox.

2. Keeping with the Hitchhiker's theme, I suppose 'So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish' is pretty unusual 🐬

Tagging anyone who's interested! ✋️

There are some fantastic stand-alone scenes here, but as a cohesive novel, So Long… is the weakest in the Hitchhiker‘s Guide series yet. Two of the most endearing things (for me) about the Guide is how outrageous it is and how Adams takes the absurdity of everyday life and spins some truly deep wisdom out of it. Both these elements are lacking here.

The whole thing rushes to a conclusion that doesn‘t quite work and frankly left me a bit puzzled.

BC_Dittemore I listened to this on Audible and even Martin Freeman, who normally does a fine job, feels like maybe he‘s not feeling this one as much either. 2y
BC_Dittemore Furthermore. I would like to add that I LOVE the Hitchhiker‘s Guide books, and this one is not without its redeeming qualities. If you‘re sitting on the fence about reading it, don‘t let my review deter you; it is still very much worth the time. 2y

So today was my last day in the office. I closed my farewell message to my coworkers with the title of this book! 😜

Meanwhile on Wednesday during the ceremony I received an award from the organization, in the form of this globe thingy. It‘s the size of a bocce ball and just about as heavy.

Wow! After the disastrous third book of the series, I didn't have much hope for this, but Adams fooled me again. So different from the others, no Zaphod, no Trillian, no Marvin (until the end) and little of Ford, which is good since I've come to dislike him very much. This is all about Arthur, on Earth, an Earth where the Vogon destruction is seen as a case of mass hallucinations. The tone is quiet and intimate, just Arthur and ⬇️⬇️⬇️

RamsFan1963 his girlfriend Fenchurch. It's more a romance than a comic sci-fi story. I think it's my second favorite of the series, after the first one of course. 4 🌟🌟🌟🌟 1/2. 5th book for #SuperSeptember readathon @Andrew65 @EadieB 3y

2. Easy to switch between books.

Happy Towel Day!

“The reason I call myself by my childhood name is to remind myself that a scientist must also be absolutely like a child. If he sees a thing, he must say that he sees it, whether it was what he thought he was going to see or not. See first, think later, then test. But always see first. Otherwise you will only see what you were expecting.”

This is my favorite of all the “Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy“ books.
I know it kind of defies the whole travel the Galaxy and see the universe idea, but I love that Arthur is content and happy; that he found a like-minded being that likes him back. Call me a Romantic.

Honestly if you have not read these books; just go pick them up!
You'll laugh so hard... and if you don't what's wrong with you? 😬

TNG 2.19, #Manhunt, or “the one with the fish“, is one of the weaker season 2 episodes, but it marks the 2nd appearance of the fabulous and glorious Lwaxana Troi, Daughter of the Fifth House, Holder of the Sacred Chalice of Rixx, Heir to the Holy Rings of Betazed, played by the forever missed Majel Barrett.

Also, the one with the fish, so thank the world for all the fish!

I needed a book to distract me and this did the job. It was great on audiobook and the story was the same blend of absurd and poignant that I remember! I‘m calling this a classic of genre fiction for #readharder2018 unless I actually get to Dune this year...

Less frentic, easier to digest, more thoughtful than the previous installment, with a cute, quirky romance, and much less galaxy hopping. The humor is more subtle, the jokes have breathing room. A welcome change of pace.⭐⭐⭐⭐/5

I loved all four books of this "trilogy." So my question to all of you: Do I want to read Eoin Colfer's addition to the series?

bmsddk This is my favourite book of the 'trilogy'!! The toothpick scene is literature at its finest 😁 I didn't enjoy the fifth book much, but I'm glad to have read it once to satisfy the curiosity (as long as I pretend it is non-canon). 8y

Just a small gathering. 😜 It seems a large chunk of my collection is either blue or black. One of these days I think I'll arrange all my books by color just to see how it looks. I probably won't be able to leave it that way long though, because my brain wants them grouped by author and genre. #bookishproblems #nicestack 😸 (mostly read, 4 from TBR shelves)

DebinHawaii Great stacks! I love the color shelving idea but it would bug me too I think to break up my authors and sets. 💙📘 8y
JenniferShepard A few years ago I arranged my books by color, and it was quite a thing to behold. Needless to say, I couldn't find anything, and it destroyed the sense of order I had created in my personal library. 8y
