For this letter I‘ve chosen a book that doesn‘t get enough love but it is one of my favourite witchy books. The Sparrow sisters live in a big old house in a small New England town. All have earth magic & own the town nursery with Patience using her gift to make herbal remedies for people. But when she‘s accused of causing the death of a child, the women come together to save both her & their town.
Bk11 of July & Bk3 of #20in4 #readathon is done! Another reread, coz I‘m just in the mood for some magic & sweetness, my life has been such a schemozzle lately. A lovely book about 3 horticultural sisters in a small coastal town in Massachusetts, it‘s full of earth magic, a lot of gossip & family rivalry until a tragedy threatens both the sisters & the whole town. One of my fave comfort reads. #ReadItAgainSam #PennyPerPage #BookspinBingo
#FallFinds The Sparrow sisters all have #Floral names, and Patience Sparrow has an understanding about plants and flowers that some would say is magical.
@Eggs
It‘s been awhile since I‘ve started and finished a book in the same day (well, a 12-hour period). It reminded me of a Hallmark movie but with a bite, so maybe a Lifetime movie. It has a familiar plot, making it a nice palette cleanser and a good start to my Spooktober reading pile 🍁🍁🍁
Patience Sparrow has an understanding about plants and flowers that some would say borders on magic. Then something goes terribly wrong, and the town turns against her. It takes an outsider and an unlikely supporter to bring everyone in the town together again, and there is some redemption in the end.
I'm very tempted to color the garden on these pages!
Sunday morning #coffeeandabook. This one has been sitting on my shelf waiting to be read, so I'm looking forward to starting it.
Mo the Surviving Succulent looks on as I cast the third book on my #bookspinbonanza list onto the DNF pile. Sunday is apparently the day I bail on books now. I gave this one 85 pages to hook me, but it‘s got a weird instalove component to it that didn‘t really work and even at 85 pages I hadn‘t begun to feel any connection to any of the characters. A book striving for some measure of realism should feel more....real. On to book 4!
This might be my most disappointing book of 2019. I was looking forward to reading but I really really did not care for it. I think it was the execution. It reminded me of Where the Crawdads Sing, where it started out as one thing and then turned into a boring courtroom drama. If you liked Garden Spells you might like this. I also felt like it lacked subtlety. Like I was being hit over the head with messaging and plot.
Is Patience Sparrow a witch? This is ultimately up to you to decide in this book but I think.....
Yes. She is a witch, and this was a pretty good read.
A trio of sisters that are beloved by the town they live in endure a tragedy and an old fashioned witch hunt begins. 💜💙🖤
If you like subtler, nature based magic you may like this. If you like stereotypical romance stories, you'll probably extra like it. I enjoy the former, despise the latter and could not believe the blatent men vs women storyline that established the "witch hunt." This story could have been a lot more interesting.
Doing a bunch of #audiobaking #audiocooking but I'm finding this book a little...hard to believe right now. I get the whole magic vs science, old ways vs new, paganism vs christianity, women vs men, but it's all TOO clean cut, too obvious, I think? I believe someone could get charged with negligent manslaughter for the kinds of things she gives out (kinds of things I make) if it went poorly BUT playing out like this seems unrealistic.
Listening to this #audiobook while cleaning is probably a good idea at this moment in time to vent some frustration; a character is giving birth to her 3rd child with a birthing plan of being at home which is OK by region's awesome (?) OBGYN. BUT local (?) GP feels angered by this choice, thinks its too dangerous, & feels he can lecture her & a midwife/friend who've done this 2 times already. now, delivering he feels "heroic". Eff off. #sexism
Fun things came in the mail yesterday! So me beautiful #jb cards from @CoffeeNBooks and @SiriuslyWeasley I also got my sweet little toasted stay puffy funko and The tagged book! A very great mail day indeed!
I was pleasantly surprised how much I enjoyed this book. It‘s been a while since I was able to finish a book in less than a week. There was magic involved but it was more like subtle magic. Reading about the developing relationships towards the end made my heart happy. 🌟🌟🌟🌟
#NuYear #day7 #Magic There‘s real magic flowing through this book and sequel The Forbidden Garden. Not the flashy “yer a wizard harry” kind, these books run with earth magic, the kind of magic that makes flowers grow, that heal the sick & keep their community thriving. When that magic is blamed for a tragedy, the whole town starts to wither & die alongside the accused‘s faith in her abilities, until all the women in town rally to the sisters side.
#UncannyOctober #day15 #YourFictionalBestFriend I couldn't stop at just one, even narrowing it down to these four books was hard. The Owens sisters from Practical Magic, the Waverleys from Garden Spells, the Sparrow Sisters & I love Lysandra from TOG series. I have a huge soft spot for ballsy, sassy women who are strong, unique and totally unapologetic for who they are. Add in a touch of magic & they're my perfect fictional best friends.
#Riotgram #day11 #UnderratedRead This book is the first in a series of, so far, two books, about the three Sparrow sisters, Sorrel, Nettie & Patience. They have a magical reputation in the town of Granite Point where they run the local nursery. Patience is the town healer, dispensing her tinctures & herbs that can heal anything.Until a new doctor in town starts questioning her methods, then a tragedy occurs with it ending in a modern witch hunt.❤️
Today's soup is a vegan Curry Laksa from Appetite for Reduction--the book tagged below. It's red pepper, onion, tofu, bok choy, snow peas & rice noodles in a red curry broth with lime & cilantro. It hit the spot today, paired with a few more chapters of this book. 📚🍜Link to my #soupersundays blog post with the recipe 👇🏻
Not a healthy lunch but I had to run to the vet to get Max's 18lb bag of special food🙀India Market is right there & I needed to grab a few global pantry items. Of course the owner was putting out fresh samosas (no resisting that) & a bag of Twisties hopped in my basket (they make me think of the fab @Lizpixie )😘& they were out of my fave Kinder Bueno so I tried this one to console myself & hit the SBUX drive-thru on my way back...#toughweek😬😆
Thinking it may be avocado toast at home for a bit-at least until the regular staff is back from vacation or the newbies are trained. Every coffeeshop breakfast can't be "a teaching moment" in the art of drizzling spicy garlic aioli.?Globby toast, the state of the world, a boring online class & filling out a jury questionnaire that I know will result in being called has not made this my best Wednesday but I did get in a few pages of this book?
A slightly under-the-weather Sunday with asthma junk has had me napping most of the day but I did manage to make Nigella's Tomato Rice Soup (a cheat's recipe that uses good jarred sauce) 😆👍for #soupersundays & as I read the 2nd book first, I'm finally getting around to reading this book. Nods to @Lizpixie for reminding me with her #needsmorelove post yesterday.❤️Link to the soup recipe with my add-ins (artichoke hearts & basil) is👇🏻 #soup🍲❤️
#AndItsAugust #day12 #NeedsMoreLove These novels definitely need more love. If you love Practical Magic or Garden Spells, you really need to pick these up. They're sweet, magical, full of emotion & earth magic and gardening! I'd really love for them to be made into a movie, they'd be fantastic.
#BooksAcrossOceans #day4 #BooksWithSisters This novel is the first in a set of books about the Sparrow sisters,Sorrel,Nettie & Patience, who live in a seaside town of Granite Point. Patience is the town 'healer' using the flowers & herbs grown in the family nursery to make brews & tinctures that can heal almost anything. All three women have a touch of earth magic in them, but when Patience is accused of manslaughter, being magical can convict you.
#Riotgrams #day5 #SomethingMagical This book is so magical & special! I only recently came across this author, after seeing the 2nd book, The Forbidden Garden on @DebinHawaii post. It's such a beautiful story about three sisters who live in a small coastal town & have a kind of earth magic. It's very much in the same genre as Garden Spells & Practical Magic, but it's so well written it makes its own mark. Highly recommend.5⭐️
Wow. This story is so lovely & magical, it draws you in under its spell & makes you not want to leave it. If you loved Practical Magic or Garden Spells then you will LOVE this book too. The Sparrow sisters have a connection to their town of Granite Point & when the youngest sister, who makes homeopathic remedies, is accused of manslaughter, the whole town is affected. Such a beautiful story of healing, hope & just a dash of magic.Highly recommend.
What a beautiful garden map! I want to live in this book, it would smell so amazing with all the roses, Jasmine, wisteria and herbs.🌹🌸🌷🌻🌱
After a full week of fishing & relaxing on a houseboat plus last nights surprise 50th birthday party for the hubby, I'm spending my Sunday in bed reading. Had an awesome time doing everything, but after night fishing on the boat & sitting around a fire pit last night in the cold, I now have the flu & am talking like a chain smoking drag queen! Planning on lots of tea,Vicks vaporub & strepsils lozenges. And this magical realism novel. Happy Sunday!
Life is great when you have a wonderful holiday, then you come home to #BookMail on your doorstep! I love this cover for Strange The Dreamer by Laini Taylor (though it doesn't have the pretty blue edges like the fairyloot copies), the hardcover duology of Six Of Crows/Crooked Kingdom has the black/red edges which look fabulous & The Sparrow Sisters is the first in a story arc with The Forbidden Garden. #yayforbookdepository
This is my "Yay, I made it another week so I'm buying myself some books!" #bookhaul I've just started reading a paperback copy of Six Of Crows & love it so far,so I needed the 2nd book and figured why not buy the pretty version? The Sparrow Sisters is actually the first book about the Sparrow family before The Forbidden Garden, which I didn't know until after I bought it,and Strange The Dreamer is getting a lot of hype & this is a gorgeous copy.
Loved this book. Sweet story of sisterly love, family bonds and the power of grief and forgiveness.
I am always drawn to fiction set in seaside New England, and this book is great for fans of Alice Hoffman's Magic realism.
The descriptions are so beautiful in the book. I listened to the Audiobook and it was such so good. The narrator is perfect.
This has been on my TBR forever. Gonna do this on Audio instead. The reviews say if you like practical magic this is a must read.
