The Atlas Six by Olivie Blake is the runaway TikTok must-read fantasy novel of the year. If you loved Ninth House and A Deadly Education, you'll love this. The world's best young magicians accept the opportunity of a lifetime. Six are chosen. Only five will walk away. The Alexandrian Society is a secret society of magical academicians, the best in the world. Their members are caretakers of lost knowledge from the greatest civilizations of antiquity. And those who earn a place among their number will secure a life of wealth, power, and prestige beyond their wildest dreams. Each decade, the world's six most uniquely talented magicians are selected for initiation - and here are the chosen few . . . - Libby Rhodes and Nicols Ferrer de Varona: inseparable enemies, cosmologists who can control matter with their minds. - Reina Mori: a naturalist who can speak the language of life itself. - Parisa Kamali: a mind reader whose powers of seduction are unmatched. - Tristan Caine: the son of a crime kingpin who can see the secrets of the universe. - Callum Nova: an insanely rich pretty boy who could bring about the end of the world. He need only ask. When the candidates are recruited by the mysterious Atlas Blakely, they are told they must spend one year together to qualify for initiation. During this time, they will be permitted access to the Society's archives and judged on their contributions to arcane areas of knowledge. Five, they are told, will be initiated. One will be eliminated. If they can prove themselves to be the best, they will survive. Most of them.

I kept thinking of people to recommend this to while listening. It was good!!! Not tooooo much of a plot, until maybe the last hour? The little plot that does exist is great, but it felt mostly like world building and character development. Maybe bc of that, the ending was a bit heavy. Like, there was too much too quick. Maybe it‘s bc I had to tear thru this work fast- I started it too late and only had half of my 7 day borrow to make it work 🥵

Nalbuque Two other things! The narration was good- APART from the voice given to the plants. It actually made me a little mad…they did those plants dirty!!! 4w
Nalbuque And the other- tagging this as a quiltbang read was wayyy too generous. I‘d have understood it if it was the 90s or something. Maybe the second book will expand? 🤞🏽🤞🏽🤞🏽 4w
thereadingreference Agree with you fully that there was more character development than plot here. I liked The Atlas Paradox better because I thought that the story was able to go into interesting directions because of the effort put into developing the characters in TAS.... there's a little novella out there called Sacred Hospitality also if you haven't seen it. 4w

The Atlas Six is a novel written by Olivie Blake that follows the great Library of Alexandria and six gifted individuals that are given the opportunity to enter the hidden Alexandrian society. The readers are first introduced to the history of the library and how it forged its eradication so that the expansive knowledge of the library is kept to the most elite magical academicians among the ages.

matthew.ugsimar The readers first follow Libby Rhodes and Nicolás Ferrer de Varona, two rival teenagers gifted with remarkable proficiency in physical magic that attracts the interest of a mysterious dark-skinned man introducing himself as Atlas Blakely. A caretaker of the library, he offers the invitation to an inauguration totaling six talented candidates that must compete with each other to qualify for initiation. (edited) 3mo
matthew.ugsimar The rest of the candidates picked by Atlas Blakely include: Reina, a young adult naturalist working in a cafe in Tokyo that happens to possess high caliber abilities over plants; Callum Nova, a man of rich background that is accustomed to getting what wants with his top notch illusionary abilities; Parisa, a naturally curious adult mind reader; Tristan, a hard-working adult preparing to inherit the Wessex fortune but more importantly, has the ext- (edited) 3mo

matthew.ugsimar If you enjoy books with dark, modern-world magic or even books with abstract relationships, than this book is for you! 3mo
matthew.ugsimar A theme greatly seen within the start of the novel is power. The very concept of magic itself is connected to power with supernatural or unknown forces. The theme of power is prevalent in that the selection of the Alexandrian society requires the highest gifted individuals who must compete for a spot at the society.

This book was such a fun and chaotic romp! I definitely had a good time reading it and I‘m excited for the next two installments. However keep 3 things in mind when beginning this read. 1. It‘s a character driven book-to a fault! 2. All the characters are pretentious, and self involved (love-able assholes???)! 3. Don‘t take it too seriously and you‘ll have a ball reading it. 💖📚

I shouldn‘t like this book. The characters are all assholes only out to help themselves, but there is something so intriguing about the whole premise of magical people competing to see who will win the chance to protect a vast library.

Every ten years, the six most talented magic users are recruited by the Alexadrian Society for very secret academic work.

Interesting story, compelling characters and a surprise twist before the cliffhanger ending (I thought this was a stand alone 🤷‍♀️).

This is fantasy, mystery and magic. Six candidates are chosen by the secret society of Alexandrian. Recruited by the mysterious Atlas Blakely they have to prove they are the best, one will be eliminated. I had to read very carefully as to follow what was actually going on. But I enjoyed it and will read the next book.

Throwback to beginning of October when I started my reread of this book. I listened to the audiobook the first time and wanted to reread in the physical form before I started on the audiobook of the sequel (released at the end of last month). I really enjoyed my reread (even if I took longer than expected), and I made lots of annotations in my paperback copy!

After finishing, I started The Atlas Paradox on audio last night! Anyone else reading?

I did the first 75% of this book on audio and the final in paper. The audiobook narration is excellent and really gives a great impression of all 6 characters. I liked the characters: there was a really nice variety of them and everyone was somehow interesting.

I loved the atmosphere and that was the best aspect of this book. Dark and mysterious!

I disliked the writing style: it was unnecessary wordy and it was hard to get the idea behind sentences.

This didn't really have a plot. There was a group of people who had random discussions with each other but nothing really happened.

Tidied up my book cases today! Cleaned out my cart, so the top section could be used to hold books I‘ve received from Goodreads giveaways, which opened a lot of space on the main shelves. I wish my library were more aesthetic, but I don‘t have the space :/

Saknicole I love your shelves always. You could always make the fireplace area some book stacks. You just have more self control than me. Like I can think of way more places to add shelves in your house 😂 9mo
Kimberlone @Saknicole true but I‘ve maxed out that particular space and until we move someplace with more room to have a proper library I am trying not to expand further than this area. If I got rid of my DVDs I could use that shelf, but no matter how much shit Jake gives me I refuse! 9mo

100/150 From the other reviews on Litsy, I guess I'm one of the few that liked this. It's not perfect by any means, almost every character is unlikable, but the mystery of the Alexandrian Society made me want to read more. The series has potential, but this initial installment had some pacing struggles due to the intricate setup information needed. The magic system is fun & a bit more grown up than some of the other dark academia series out there. I could have used a bit more atmosphere & character clarification. Things do pick up & the story gets more depth & tension in the end. I feel like the initial struggle may be worth it for the payoff of the whole series.

I cannot put my finger on why I didn‘t enjoy this book. There were multiple moments while reading when I wanted to dnf the book. But then something would grab my attention and I would keep reading. It‘s strange, because normally I can pinpoint at least one reason why I dislike a book, but with this one I can‘t quite articulate it… I just didn‘t vibe with it…

Definitely not my usual thing but that‘s the joy of challenges! There‘s a secret magical library with a strange manipulative competition between the ‘Six‘. Too much world-building, magicy stuff for me, but I did enjoy following the chess-like moves and POVs of each of the six chosen to protect and learn at the library. I love a #DarkAcademia vibe, and the complexity of characters kept me engaged. No.2 of the #duology due in Oct. #pop22 #booked2022
