Battle Ground | Jim Butcher

Mehso-so

This is one long battle sequence, hence the name. I found it very boring to read and ended up skimming most of the book.

Originally, Peace Talks and Battle Ground were one book. I would have preferred that. Cut a few bits out and make the narrative tighter and it would have worked. On its own, Battle Ground is a slog.

⬇️

PuddleJumper Because of the grand scale of things, many character details and plots got lost. Thomas was hardly mentioned for example.

The Murphy thing was very stupid and unnecessary. Harry didn't need more reason to fight. It was cheap.

It's still a well written book but I've not been enjoying this series as much. The last few books were very hard to read and don't have the re-readability of the early books.

peanutnine Bummer. At least you can check it off your TBR! now
Ruthiella Late series bloat… it‘s a danger , regardless of the series or genre, I think. now
PuddleJumper @Ruthiella I think you're right now

Look at that! It's become discoloured! 🤣

I'm going to start reading this for #CozyChristmas as I don't want this on my #Roll100 list for the third year. I know I've been avoiding it and with the recent disappointment of He Who Drowned the World, I will keep avoiding it

@peanutnine

peanutnine Oh no! Sequels are tricky, I hope this one doesn't disappoint! 1h

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ for my December #Roll100 pick.

After the unexpected loss of their friend, five young adults make a pact to give one another “living funerals”. Over the course of 20ish years, the friends come together at various life stages to uphold their promise to one another.

This was moving, emotional, and struck a chord. Beautiful.

24 different crime stories to help you through Christmas time 😄 I enjoyed them all, except maybe one. The stories are set all across Germany, Austria and Switzerland, and of course I had to check the map each morning before reading one of the stories. Some authors even made to my reading list.

Scottish noir, and this one is definitely noir. Very grim but still the black humor is there front and center. I do enjoy the personal stories and admittedly inappropriate humor and byplay between the officers as they struggle to find answers and hold back their own horror.

#Roll100 @PuddleJumper Last Roll100 of the year!

I really tried, I had it 68% and I‘m DNFing. It is so boring and it feels like NOTHING has happened. I don‘t know if I‘ve read a fantasy that explains so much yet I still have no idea who is whom. Blah. #hailthebail

#roll100 off the TBR!

PuddleJumper It's off your list now! 2d
julesG It was a rather disappointing read. 2d

Absolutely beautiful book for my first December #roll100 definitely not one for feeling festive but a really interesting and important tale of nazi Germany. Fantastic character development and really interesting plot.

Cannot BELIEVE I am working on a reading journal for ***2025*** That's not a real date!!!! @PuddleJumper is responsible for most of my challenges this year, although @lauredhel is also doing some work 😂 This year: #ISpyBingo #100YearsofBooks (and finishing @Librarybelle 's #192025 ), #Pantone2025 #Roll100 #GottaCatchEmAll and #BookChain

Not pictured - #ReadtheUSA #WickedWords @AsYouWish #FourFoursin25 @lauredhel #FictionalTraveler @julieclair

BookishMadHatter I've started on my 2025 book journal too, but I'm scaling it back a little this year. I find I have to use a bunder because if I run out of space and need to split a section in a bound journal my poor brain has a meltdown and I end up having to start all over. 5d
TheAromaofBooks @BookishMadHatter - I feel that!! For the last couple of years I've used a quad-lined composition book. Because it's sewn, I can add lots of washi tape and other pieces of paper taped in and it just gets fatter without falling apart 😂 All my ongoing, year-long challenges are in the front. Then I skip to the second half of the notebook and create my monthly #BookSpinBingo lists as I go along, plus any short-term readathons or challenges. 5d

julieclair This looks great! 👍😃 5d
Gissy Amazing🤩👌 Well I can say I also started to organize my reading goals…🤔I chose which journal and reading Planner I‘m going to use😜it is a start😂😂😂 2d
TheAromaofBooks @Gissy - It's all about finding a system that works for you!!! I loooooove tracking things 😂 So I use a spreadsheet plus my notebook!!! I also get these really inexpensive book logs from Amazon that I love because it means every book I read ends up with a reference number. I started using them several years ago and I'm almost done with my 14th volume!! https://www.amazon.com/dp/1695365623 2d

Since I‘ve read (and cleared from my shelves) 94 books from my 2024 #Roll100 list, I‘ve decided to make two lists for 2025. I‘m going to have one list for audiobooks and a second list for physical & ebooks.
My goal will be to read 5 books each month at a minimum between the two lists.

PuddleJumper Whoop! That's amazing! Hope 2025 is as good 6d

I‘m participating for the first time in #roll100 next year. I‘ve decided that I want to use this challenge to tackle my Netgalley TBR. It‘s out of control. After my dog passed away on October 25, it only got worse because I added more books on to it. I haven‘t made my list yet but I still have time. I‘m hoping this will motivate me to read my Netgalley TBR because I haven‘t been in the mood to read any of the books on there.

PuddleJumper Reading can be a good distraction. Sorry for your loss 6d
