pickThis has sat on my shelf for YEARS. Why didn‘t I read it right away? It‘s a gorgeous novel.. the history of Achilles, but told from the POV of Patroclus - the one who loved him, and who Achilles loved back. It‘s the sweeping saga of Greek Myth, and just beautifully written.
pickI studied Ancient Greek in High School and I remember translating the Illiad and commenting how in love Achilles was with Patroclus, so this book is the nerd fanfic that I've been waiting for since my teenage years. I like that it's told from Patroclus point of view, it gives depth to his character, but also allows us to see Achilles from the point of view of the person who loved him most (forgive me Tethis).The different events of Achilles life⬇️
so-soPicked up as part of my effort to read all the books I own. A lovely vacation/sick read. I rarely read YA so the dialogue and romance scenes felt deliciously ridiculous.
pickI didn‘t actually know about Achilles story other than his heel, which wasn‘t mentioned. Would he really be killed by a spear in the heel?? I liked that the story was narrated by Patroclus rather than Achilles. It created more of what others saw: the hero. My favourite part was with Chiron and how he was immune to Thetis motherly wrath, which it seemed as though he was the only one. I cried at the end, the last sentence was perfection.
pickI'm such a greek mythology nerd and I studied the odyssey and the aenied in college - this was such a loving retelling of Achilles and Patroclus's story. I'm now going to go play Hades to see them together in the afterlife and feel better

When I was reading this book ,I I truly felt love in words , not a typical romantic but love in its purest form . Patroclus and Achilles are the main characters, but it‘s their deep connection, their emotions, that truly take center stage, making their love unforgettable.❤️❤️

pickThe tender love story between Achilles and Patroclus was inspiring and lovely. At times, I found myself thinking these things really happened, as if it was written as historical fiction. Did Thetis, Apollo, and Artemis really involve themselves in everyday lives? Then, my conscious mind returned to reality. I completely forgot that they were characters of Homer. That is powerful writing.
Ms. Miller, hurry and get better.

I have not been on Litsy in a few years. But, I am post spinal surgery so what should I do, but read and return to the community that I adored, adored me, and then I abandoned. I just found myself at a place where I couldn't read. I'm going to have to thank Fourth Wing and ACOTAR for the past few months.

pickGuys i don‘t know what to say … this story was s heartbreak. I loved to see more depth in Achilles‘ life. Known as a half god and as one of the best greek heros but never as the person he probably really was 🥹

The fact that this is Miller‘s first novel is absolutely incredible. She has this amazing talent of taking mythic characters and stories that many of us have grown up reading and studying, and turning them into, if not ordinary people, then at least relatable ones.
It‘s shocking that she can have somebody like Achilles or Odysseus as a character and they feel fresh and new when I‘m reading her work.
Definitely recommend.

so-soOk so I love mythology. Was this retelling needed? Now I have read the reviews and I‘m thinking we need to bring back mythology so that we don‘t have to reread stories in a way that are kind of ridiculous? Anyone else feel this way…I did like the story as a whole but the “added” aspects?!

The first half had me thinking this would be a 4.5 star read, unfortunately the second half was really boring and disappointing. The ending picked it up a lot and had me tearing up, but on the whole was quite slow and not what I expected
pickI chose Circe for Bookclub a couple of years ago, and am now glad to have read this, Miller‘s first novel.
Whilst a ‘pick‘ I did not love it. The characters felt a bit flat and I was not particularly emotionally invested. An interesting take the relationship between Patroclus & Achilles.
Finally getting into this. It‘s been on my radar since I joined Litsy many years ago, when it seemed that everyone on Litsy was reading it. I found this well-read copy in my Little Street Library. Bonus 🙌. #currentlyreading

bailedThis book is not worthy of the hype. I hated it. Hercules was supposed to be a hero, but he jokes of killing his wife. Achilles and Agamemnon had not safe word with civilians. Achilles lets the king kill a girl that I wanted Achilles to save. I abandoned this book when Patroclus joked about dogs fighting. I regret buying it.
pickThe hype is so well deserved. A gorgeous, unforgettable love story with excitement, warmth, and thoughtful character evolution. Can't wait to read it again.
