Lovesick Blossoms | Julia Watts
12 posts | 10 read | 8 to read
In a small Kentucky college town in 1953, two married women desperately fall in love with each other, until a moment of indiscretion threatens to destroy both their lives. In her new adult novel, award-winning author Julia Watts creates a compelling, emotional queer tale of power and passion. Colleagues and neighbors of Samuel and Boots are more than willing to accept their married status, even though Samuel "dresses like a boy" and the pair's relationship is one of convenience that will never be consummated. But when Samuel meets a new professor's wife, Frances, at a faculty party, she soon falls in love, and learns the difficulty of discretion in a small town--with tragic consequences. LAMBDA award-winning author Julia Watts (Needlework, Quiver) returns to adult fiction in this heartbreaking, yet hopeful novel. Highly recommended for fans of Lauren Groff, Rosie Walsh, and Alexandria Bellefleur.

⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 Story of forbidden love between two women married to men who are faculty in the same department in a college in the South in 1953. Months liked and rooted for the characters but found the carelessness/cluelessness of one exasperating. Mostly left so thankful to not have been born 60 years earlier, because the treatment of women generally and gay women in particular was garbage. #LitsyToB24

#LitsyTOB24

While elements of the plot felt maybe a little by the numbers, I really liked the two main characters and was particularly invested in their fates. Two women fall in love in a small Kentucky college town in the 1950s. Unless one was Gertrude Stein or Rock Hudson, you can imagine at the obstacles faced by homosexuals in this era.

This forbidden sapphic love story is full of longing and obstacles. Set in a college town in the south, readers get to know two women whose husbands are colleagues at the University. I read this directly following “Same Bed” which was confusing and not my style at all, so I found the straightforward narrative such a relief. Also, the setting was well done and I could feel the repressive 1950s vibe throughout. And I‘ve finished the #LitsyTob24 🙌

cariashley Wow well done! 3mo
Hooked_on_books I just finished this one the other day and loved it. I think it‘s a beautiful story. 3mo
BarbaraBB Wow, that‘s awesome, finishing them all! I have two more to go: Julia and Happiness Falls. I am glad you enjoyed your ultimate one! 3mo
squirrelbrain Glad you liked it! And well done on finishing. I‘m just slogging my way through Same Bed, which is my last one. 3mo

I‘m seeing a lot of tepid reviews for this one but am happy to report it really worked for me. It‘s a simple story, but in its simplicity lies its sweetness and heart. And so much of what the two women of the story faced is true of the 1950s era. I just loved it. #LitsyTOB

#LitsyTOB. In 1953 two gay adults marry for convenience which works well until Samuel falls in love with Frances, a married woman whose husband works at the same small town college as Boots. This was a short enjoyable listen. 3.5 🌟

Megabooks Great review! 3mo
Hooked_on_books This is one of the ones I still have to go. I‘m unsure of what to expect after some tepid reviews, but yours gives me hope! 3mo

#LitsyToB24 Set in the repressive 50s, when women had little rights, homosexuality was mainly a sin and segregation was the way of life in Kentucky, two women fall in love. Their illicit romance is the subject of the book and although I enjoyed reading it, the book felt a bit YA to me and I think the author made the story a bit too convenient at times. ⬇️⬇️

BarbaraBB I mean Francis is a mother of three small children (which was necessary for the story) but her kids were never there. That baby napped all day while she was with Samuel. Her other kids were out playing by themselves for hours and hours. Come on! And that AJ, wtf? Coming to the house just to assault Samuel and be thrown out my Mamma Liz with her hun? I need more nuance and depth in my characters! 3mo

TheBookHippie A baby who naps… never had one of those 😝😅. 3mo
BarbaraBB @TheBookHippie Me neither. Nor had I one who never cried 😂 3mo
Hooked_on_books This is one of two I have left to read from our list. (The other is Julia, and I have to read 1984 first.) I‘m interested to see my response to it, but between yours and @Megabooks ‘ review, my expectations are tempered. 3mo
Megabooks @Hooked_on_books yes, once you‘ve read it, take a look at Barbara‘s spoilers because I had many of the same problems. There were so many interesting directions to take and side characters to develop, and I just felt it was a bit of failure of imagination. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Great idea but very underdeveloped!! 3mo
BarbaraBB @Megabooks Yes! Boots for example could have been very interesting and Samuel too. Instead they were rather one-dimensional. 3mo
Jas16 Totally agree about the lack of depth. 3mo
Librarybelle At least it covered a few prompts! 3mo
youneverarrived Always puts me off a bit when things are made too convenient. 3mo
sarahbarnes Agree with @Hooked_on_books - I still have this one to read and not really excited about it at this point. It‘s too bad it wasn‘t executed well because the premise sounded interesting. 3mo
squirrelbrain Sorry it didn‘t work for you. 😬 3mo
BarbaraBB @sarahbarnes @Hooked_on_books It still is an engaging read so you‘ll probably have a good time with it. 3mo

Another easy read for the plane ride home and another light pick. Samuel is married to Boots, a professor several years her elder. They love each other but aren‘t in love as they are both gay and using their marriage for protection from 1950s persecution. When Samuel meets and falls in love with the wife of Boots‘s colleague their fragile peace is threatened. This was an affecting story but still left me feeling not fully satisfied. #Litsytob24

Megabooks Yes, there was something I found unsatisfying about the character arcs. 3mo

#WeeklyForecast 03/24

I am reading and enjoying both The Pachinko Parlour and Crossroads (I have finally picked it up @squirrelbrain , what a wonderful dysfunctional family 😀). Next will be be the tagged one, for #LitsyToB24. Looking forward to it!

TrishB I‘ve had Crossroads on the pile for a while now! 3mo
Megabooks Loved Pachinko, obviously 😁, but I also loved Crossroads! Can‘t wait for the sequel! 3mo
BarbaraBB @Megabooks I am LOVING Pachinko 💕 3mo

BarbaraBB @squirrelbrain Thanks for the heads up 💕 3mo
Deblovestoread Look forward to your review on the Franzen. I hated The Corrections and haven‘t read him since then. Maybe time to try again. 😀 3mo

I really wanted to love this but didn‘t. 😢 It‘s queer love set in repressive 1950s Kentucky, but the audio narration was not enjoyable and the story just got thin and repetitive. It needed a good side plot with Boots or something. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I‘d read more by Watts though!

Samuel is a lesbian woman in a sham marriage with a gay professor. Things get dangerous when she falls for another professor‘s wife, but what will they lose if they get caught?

squirrelbrain For some reason I thought you‘d already read this and loved it…. 🤔 4mo
BarbaraBB I thought so too @squirrelbrain ! I will temper my expectations now! 4mo

sarahbarnes Sorry to hear you didn‘t love this - I‘m curious about it for sure. 4mo
Hooked_on_books Oh, that‘s too bad. I‘ll be interested to see what I think. I ended up with a print version so I‘m hoping it comes across better than the audio. Not much to do about a thin plot, though. 4mo
Megabooks @Hooked_on_books @sarahbarnes @BarbaraBB @squirrelbrain yeah, I may be getting a bit harsh on this, but I would‘ve liked a bit more. There were many interesting side characters that I just felt were underutilized. I guess it just didn‘t live up to the potential. Very interested to read what more folks think!! 4mo
Addison_Reads Sorry it fell short for you. I was a big fan of this one, but I also read it right after a couple of real duds on the ToB list and was delighted to finally enjoy one. 4mo

#tob24

Definitely one of my favorites from the long list! 💚

This Sapphic historical fiction swept me up in the story and had me enthralled. Julia Watts paints a vivid picture of life in 1950s Kentucky. Usually, romance isn't my thing, but that is just a small part of this sweeping tale of friendship, acceptance, and learning to be oneself.

Megabooks I think this is up next for me! 5mo

Another #ToB book that I really liked (although not as much as Idlewild and Vintage Contemporaries)

Samuel has changed her name and wears men‘s clothes, but no-one questions her identity as she‘s married to Boots, a flamboyantly dressed Professor who still lives with his Mama. But once Samuel meets and falls in love with Frances, another Professor‘s wife their carefully-built world threatens to fall apart around them.

Addison_Reads I just got this one from the library. Now I'm excited to start it. 5mo
squirrelbrain My only quibble would be the inclusion of race (in the Deep South) as a theme too - there wasn‘t really ‘enough‘ of this so it felt like an add-on. The author should have made more of this, or left it out entirely. 5mo
BarbaraBB It does sound good! 5mo

First purposeful purchase from the #toblonglist. 🥂 Of course I had to get the one set in Kentucky! Nice end to a crappy day of dental work. 😁

jlhammar There are a few on the longlist that weren‘t even on my radar. This is one of them. Look forward to your thoughts! 5mo
sarahbarnes Just looked this one up on Litsy after seeing it on the list! 5mo
