The Wordy Shipmates
The Wordy Shipmates | Sarah Vowell
From the author of Lafayette in the Somewhat United States,The Wordy Shipmates is New York Timesbestselling author Sarah Vowell's exploration of the Puritans and their journey to America to become the people of John Winthrop's "city upon a hill," a shining example, a "city that cannot be hid." To this day, America views itself as a Puritan nation, but Vowell investigates what that means? and what it should mean. What was this great political enterprise all about? Who were these people who are considered the philosophical, spiritual, and moral ancestors of our nation? What Vowell discovers is something far different from what their uptight shoe-buckles-and- corn reputation might suggest. The people she finds are highly literate, deeply principled, and surprisingly feisty. Their story is filled with pamphlet feuds, witty courtroom dramas, and bloody vengeance. Along the way she asks: *Was Massachusetts Bay Colony governor John Winthrop a communitarian, a Christlike Christian, or conformity?s tyrannical enforcer? Answer: Yes! *Was Rhode Island?s architect, Roger Williams, America?s founding freak or the father of the First Amendment? Same difference. *What does it take to get that jezebel Anne Hutchinson to shut up? A hatchet. *What was the Puritans? pet name for the Pope? The Great Whore of Babylon. Sarah Vowell?s special brand of armchair history makes the bizarre and esoteric fascinatingly relevant and fun. She takes us from the modern-day reenactment of an Indian massacre to the Mohegan Sun casino, from old-timey Puritan poetry, where ?righteousness? is rhymed with ?wilderness,? to a Mayflower-themed waterslide. Throughout, The Wordy Shipmates is rich in historical fact, humorous insight, and social commentary by one of America?s most celebrated voices. Thou shalt enjoy it.

Read this if you‘re desperately curious about the first settlers of the Massachusetts Bay Colony.

Or if you‘re like me & you really appreciate Vowell‘s unique voice & witty historical observations. I do think I like her books in audio format better, where it feels like I‘m sitting down with a friend infodumping their newest fixation. I wish more time was spent on her last section about Anne Hutchinson, but I still blazed through this. 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑

Two for One:

Laserwriter II: A very New York story; a New York of a certain time and place. Good story but I am very much not the New Yorker from that time or place.

Wordy Shipmates: Humorous recounting of the words spilled by the early colonists. Tries too hard to laugh out loud funny. Falls a bit flat.

I still have a soft spot for Vowell‘s roaming travel history books, while this one was not my favorite, it was still both informative & entertaining which is her genius. Less the Puritans of Plymouth (of Thanksgiving pageant fame), and more those later arrivals of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, and all the minor disagreements of faith that led to major schisms as group after group broke off (or were exiled) to later found their own colonies in ⤵️

Riveted_Reader_Melissa ↪️ Connecticut, and Rhode Island. History can be a soap opera if told right, and between Indian friendships and wars, and divisions of biblical interpretation, this has all the politics of whose in and out, depending on the day.

** side note, when her nephew Owen grows up and stops inputting tangents in these, I‘ll so miss his contributions.

Interesting.

Made me think of your comment the other day @GingerAntics

GingerAntics I don‘t agree with the bit about not being reasonable because they were born before the age of reason. That‘s ridiculous. I also disagree that the people we currently label as Puritanical do reasonable things. They do a boat load of very unreasonable things in the name of their religion. We won‘t prepare kids for their first periods or first erections because religion. 4y
GingerAntics We won‘t teach children about science because religion. We won‘t treat children like human beings because religion. The vocal ones are, sadly, highly unreasonable. “These are my beliefs, so everyone better act this way” is far from reasonable and antithetical to the founding fathers (the real ones, not the fake versions they worship) and the constitution. 4y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @GingerAntics I think her point is that historical Puritans, as they first came over to this country were different then the current hard-line Christian religious groups we have now. Evangelicals are pretty set in their ways, for some branches, in sone areas, but they are not Puritans...however the term Puritanical has become a catch-all to describe all of that, which today may be be much more strict than actual historical Puritans were. 4y
See All 15 Comments
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @GingerAntics so like Kleenex has became something we call all tissues (no matter the real brand), the Puritan descriptor is used for groups that are not actually Puritans. So there are noun Puritans and their beliefs, and our current usage of Puritan as a description for backward/strict, and that it might be historically a misnomer. 4y
GingerAntics True, none of them are putting people to death for premarital sex, kissing in public, or extra marital affairs. Far too many of them would be dead that way. I think the meaning has changed. I‘m hoping she‘s addressing that. People who don‘t know these people aren‘t just like the puritans are proof that the religious regime‘s education plan isn‘t working. All of the things labelled puritanical are descendants of the Puritans, though. 4y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @GingerAntics I don‘t think I‘m explaining this well, but I think she‘s saying actual Puritans were more questioning and open-minded than the groups we would now label as having puritan beliefs. That today‘s are more close minded and unbending than the group the term was named after. 4y
GingerAntics The Kleenex thing has always intrigued me. That is some good marketing right there. If you think about it, the Kleenex branding people did an AMAZING job at making people think “Kleenex” when they see tissues. Those guys deserve a posthumous bonus. 4y
GingerAntics I get that, but I think it‘s still missing how the word is actually being used today. The Puritan movement no longer exists. Calling something Puritanical now isn‘t saying that the person or practice in question is literally a Puritan, but that it‘s a belief that exists because of the ground work built by the Puritan settlers. Countries that expelled or didn‘t allow in Puritan groups don‘t hold beliefs like modern evangelicals do today. 4y
GingerAntics Countries the did, do. 4y
GingerAntics That interpretation of the word is supported by the dictionary. The first definition is “very strict moral or religious matters, often excessively so.” Only the second definition mentions the actual group of people. It sounds like the author is conflating the two definitions. 4y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @GingerAntics http://www.rinkworks.com/words/eponyms.shtml more on the Kleenex thing. I seem to remember learning or reading somewhere that the marketing was too good, when every tissue is now a Kleenex, people won‘t specifically buy your named brand (Kleenex) when they want to buy some Kleenexes (tissues), when it become the name for all of them it defeats brand loyalty. 🤷‍♀️ 4y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @GingerAntics and Puritans the group (1 specific religious group) came first, just like Kleenex (1 specific tissue brand) came first. Later Puritan became any strict religious idea (not necessarily Puritans) and Kleenex any tissue brand (not necessarily Kleenex brand). So the book is about the first Puritians (the original group that came to the new world), and how their image changed from first starving and learning to farm from natives, to... 4y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa ... Salem witch trials decades later, and how that later subset led to the name meaning the secondary descriptive name we use today for puritanical views and groups. I‘m finding that history interesting, and the history of how we co-opt their name in modern parlance, which is an interesting history of the English language too. (edited) 4y
GingerAntics That‘s a really valid point on the kleenexes. We buy kleenexes all the time, but we usually buy great value. 😂 4y
GingerAntics Okay, that‘s clearer on her aim. 4y

I loved Assassination Vacation & thought I‘d try one of Vowell‘s other books. I almost didn‘t finish but read that the part about Anne Hutchinson was interesting, so I stuck it out. I ended up not being that interested in the Puritans, although Anne was the bright spot. I didn‘t like the audio format—different actors with Vowell narrating most of it. Why have all the big-name actors if they‘re only going to read a few lines?

ljuliel I‘ve heard that mu,it- narrator audiobooks cost a lot of money to make since everyone gets a paycheck. They probably agreed to only read a few lines for a set fee . I thought Assassination Vacation was her best so far. I like them all, but that subject was more interesting to me. 5y

Not sure I ever understood what the central premise of this was supposed to be so I found some parts to drag and other parts seemed cut short. I would have liked to know more about how Vowell experiences this history and not necessarily a (humorous) retelling of the history.

Sarah Vowell has a unique way of presenting history and I enjoyed her look at the Puritans and the Massachusetts Bay Colony although it was pretty dry at times. I did really appreciate some insights into local New England history especially regarding the Pequot War which took place in Mystic, CT. I also learned about Anne Hutchinson who I knew nothing about and found that the Hutchinson Parkway was named after her. V for #litsyatoz2019

I listened to the audiobook and I‘m so glad I did. The voice acting is really fun, and when it‘s being read to me I am not as bothered by the author injecting random tangents and her own opinions into the book. I learned a lot, including that the puritans were fantastic readers and loved writing and education. I really enjoyed this audio book and highly recommend it to anyone with the slightest bit of interest in American or British history 3/5 🌟

This was a slow read for me, not because it was dull, but because I had to slow down to absorb all the information that was coming at me. (Except the middle part about the Pequot Wars - I really did find that boring.) I think the author did a good job bringing the Puritans to life, and exploring the roots of modern American attitudes in Puritan beliefs. I especially found the part on Anne Hutchinson interesting.

Nute I have every intention on reading her books, but I always get about halfway through and then put them aside for another book. Her writing is good and she gives a lot of information in a small-sized book (usually about 200 pages), but I'm unable to finish them. 7y
azulaco @Nute I sympathize. I had to push my way through the middle part. It was a slog for awhile. I might not have pushed so hard if I hadn‘t had some friends I was reading it with. 7y

I thoroughly enjoyed this history of how the Puritan settling of Massachusetts has influenced American values and politics up to the present day. Vowell's takes on history are always informative and entertaining, and this one is no exception. Meh...I expected more. The snark doesn't sit well in a supposed historical text. (I read that the Library of Congress lists this as fiction ?) There seems to be no organization to it. And I have no idea what the thesis was.
The Audible version was odd. She had a host of actors signed on, but they read just a line or two here & there. It doesn't come off well.

On the upside, I finally know what "The Hutch" is & who it's named for.

Immersive, well researched. It's a great dive into life with the Puritans of Plymouth colony. Only gripe is that it takes the Puritan's view of English politics of the time instead of a more objective view.

Sweettartlaura That's actually one of the more interesting points for me. I get that things didn't go as well as they could have😜. But I think it's worth remembering that by and large, especially in the New England colonies, the people coming were really trying to create something meaningful. That gets buried by the fact that, you know, there were already people living here, doing their own thing 😉 8y
