Sacre Bleu
Sacre Bleu: A Comedy d'Art | Christopher Moore
It is the color of the Virgin Mary's cloak, a dazzling pigment desired by artists, an exquisite hue infused with danger, adventure, and perhaps even the supernatural. It is . . . Sacr BleuIn July 1890, Vincent van Gogh went into a cornfield and shot himself. Or did he? Why would an artist at the height of his creative powers attempt to take his own life . . . and then walk a mile to a doctor's house for help? Who was the crooked little "color man" Vincent had claimed was stalking him across France? And why had the painter recently become deathly afraid of a certain shade of blue? These are just a few of the questions confronting Vincent's friendsbaker-turned-painter Lucien Lessard and bon vivant Henri Toulouse-Lautrecwho vow to discover the truth about van Gogh's untimely death. Their quest will lead them on a surreal odyssey and brothel-crawl deep into the art world of late nineteenth-century Paris.Oh l l, quelle surprise, and zut alors! A delectable confection of intrigue, passion, and art historywith cancan girls, baguettes, and fine French cognac thrown in for good measureSacr Bleu is another masterpiece of wit and wonder from the one, the only, Christopher Moore.

Mehso-so

The subject is fascinating: end of 19th century painters in Paris, genius talent, their art and debaucheries: Renoir, Manet, Monet, Van Hogh, Gaugain, Pisarro all show up, with the lead role of Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, painter, drunkard and whoremonger extraordinaire. We have the usual fantasy elements, and plenty of crude humor and sex expected from Moore. I found the humor a bit tired though, and the muse just too unrealistic. ⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2 ⬇️

Gezemice Moore is one of my favorite authors and this really is between a so-so and a pick. I rounded down because, well, really, Poopstick is just not a funny name. Getting lazy in his old age, me thinks. 4y

A patron recommended this to me, so I picked it up; I wasn‘t entirely sure if I‘d enjoy it - I‘m not too much of an art history buff - but I‘m about halfway through, and I‘m actually having a blast. (The names of the artists are at least familiar ones, and don‘t require much foreknowledge!) #sacrebleu #christophermoore #arthistory #famousartists

“This is a story about the color blue. Blue is the sky, the sea, a god‘s eye, a devil‘s tail, a birth, a strangulation, a virgin‘s cloak, a monkey‘s ass. It‘s a butterfly, a bird, a spicy joke, the saddest song, the brightest day. Blue is sly, slick, it slides into the room sideways, a slippery trickster.”

For me this book is an “almost.” It follows fictionalized versions of the well-known impressionist painters and their interactions with a mysterious colorman who sells paints. It is funny in places and the story is good overall, but it felt a bit forced to me, as though it was trying too hard.

What an interesting story! I wasn‘t sure what I was getting into at first, but the author‘s imagination took me on a wild ride with some of my favorite Impressionists. 2) We might go out to eat or something. Not really sure yet.

A friend gave this to me a few years ago. “I can‘t get into this, maybe you‘ll like it.” So I tried it and felt the same way. But last weekend, I started the audiobook to give it one last try. Voila! It was funny, full of art history, with a big scoop of mystery on top. Must suspend some disbelief, but that should be expected with Moore. ♥️♥️🇫🇷 🎨👨🏼‍🎨

While definitely a novel with Moore's vibe, this was a departure from his others that I've read. And that's not good or bad, one way of the other. Moore takes on historical fiction: Paris in the 1890s as fellow artists and friends seek answers for Van Gogh's death (and the mystery surrounding it). Moore weaves fact with fiction with his usual flair. I'm glad I finally dove into this. ⭐️⭐️⭐️👍🏼
