Margo's Got Money Troubles
Margo's Got Money Troubles: A Novel | Rufi Thorpe
An audacious, wildly funny, completely unpredictable novel by a writer so singular that its hard to compare her to anyone else . . . absolutely brilliant. Kevin Wilson A bold, laugh-out-loud funny, and heartwarming story about one young womans attempt to navigate adulthood, new motherhood, and her meager bank account in our increasingly online worldfrom the PEN/Faulkner finalist and critically acclaimed author of The Knockout Queen. As the child of a Hooters waitress and an ex-pro wrestler, Margo Millet's always known shed have to make it on her own. So she enrolls at her local junior college, even though she cant imagine how shell ever make a living. Shes still figuring things out and never planned to have an affair with her English professorand while the affair is brief, it isnt brief enough to keep her from getting pregnant. Despite everyones advice, she decides to keep the baby, mostly out of naivet and a yearning for something bigger. Now, at twenty, Margo is alone with an infant, unemployed, and on the verge of eviction. She needs a cash infusionfast. When her estranged father, Jinx, shows up on her doorstep and asks to move in with her, she agrees in exchange for help with childcare. Then Margo begins to form a plan: shell start an OnlyFans as an experiment, and soon finds herself adapting some of Jinxs advice from the world of wrestling. Like how to craft a compelling character and make your audience fall in love with you. Before she knows it, shes turned it into a runaway success. Could this be the answer to all of Margos problems, or does internet fame come with too high a price? Blisteringly funny and filled with sharp insight, Margos Got Money Troubles is a tender tale starring an endearing young heroine whos struggling to wrest money and power from a world that has little interest in giving it to her. Its a playful and honest examination of the art of storytelling and controlling your own narrative, and an empowering portrait of coming into your own, both online and off.

Didn‘t expect something with such a bright cover and punchy title to venture into nuanced, shades-of-grey topics like opioid addiction treatments, sex worker advocacy, etc.

But it navigates Margo‘s money troubles (plus legal troubles, family troubles, and more) with humor and empathy and large helpings of food for thought.

#OffMyShelf for published in the last 2 years prompt

I struggle to understand the hype. Maybe it‘s that I can't relate to Margo since she is 19yo single mom, college dropout. But the main issues are:
(1) I was bored. I skimmed a good portion & never lost the story because it never went anywhere. The synopsis is the *entire* story.
(2) with the title, I expected a more realistic book. But here, all the plot lines wrapped up too neatly positive.

wanderinglynn @tpixie I also couldn‘t relate, but moreover there were too many other issues with it. 6d

“You are about to begin reading a new book, and to be honest you are a little tense.”

#firstlinefriday

I‘m almost halfway. I have mixed feelings so far as I have some concerns with the messaging and the switching between 1st POV and 3rd (sometimes on the same page) feels gimmicky. So I‘ll probably rate it as meh, and I think it‘s been overhyped.

tpixie My older sister could not relate and so did not finish it… I‘ll be interested to see what you think of it 1w

23-4 Dec 24 (audiobook)
Decided I needed some relief from Sherlock whilst I was out doing Christmas lunch errands (hell on Christmas Eve) and whilst I did really enjoy this, it wasn‘t light. Yes it was sometimes funny but also sad just how naive Margot was (about sex abuse, having a baby, drug addiction, money) and how few avenues there were for support. Highlighted generation and wealth gaps for me and did provoke more thought than expected.

I think this book is more sad than funny but I liked that it challenged so many societal norms and drew attention to their contradictions & hypocrisies. It took me a while warm up to the story but, ultimately, I enjoyed it even if I could have done without the self-conscious literary theory aspects. My first book from @TheKidUpstairs #AuldLangSpine list. I'm looking forward to reading more of them. Picture is a bird friend on Raymond Island.

I think the best way to sum up my impression is to say I admire the themes and morals the author was trying to convey, but I don't love how she conveyed them.

CarolynM I think I liked it more than you did, but I also think we've got similar reservations about it. 1w
angieinwonderland @CarolynM what points did you really like? Maybe it was the hype for me? 1w
CarolynM I thought she did a good job of illustrating the hypocrisy around women and sex (amongst other things), the obstacles in the way of the under privileged in their attempts to improve their lot, and how far short of following Christ‘s example so many church goers are. The story itself didn‘t do a lot for me, and I thought Margo was a bit too good to be true. 7d

I was not excited for this one as, quite frankly, I didn‘t expect to like it at all, but turns out I liked it a lot! I‘m glad the #TOB25 put it on their list and in the tourney to get me to read it. It‘s funny but has heart and shows the reality of the lack of options and support for young single moms.

ChaoticMissAdventures This one was such a runaway winner this year! So many people (me too) loved it. It was really unique. 3w
JamieArc Did you listen to the audiobook? I think the narration made it that much better for me. 3w
Hooked_on_books @JamieArc I did! And honestly, when I heard it was being narrated by the same person playing Margo in the adaptation, I was leery of stunt casting, but she was great. She really brought Margo and the other characters to life and kept me invested. 3w

If Rufi Thorpe was trying to get me to fall in love with her a little bit, she‘s succeeded. I‘m hungry for more of her writing! It felt casual yet crafted. The characters are complicated and dimensional. The meta nature of the text added a sense of self-conscious play. I hope Arby‘s has given Thorpe a stake in their company because I can pretty much guarantee that readers everywhere are now craving at least one item from their menu. 👇🏻

monalyisha 1/1: For me, it‘s their seasoned curly fries with cheese sauce. @Christine, if you aren‘t put off by some blunt sexual content, this can (and should!) be added to my #AuldLangSpine list. I listened to the audiobook, which is flawlessly narrated by Elle Fanning. 🌀🍟👻 (edited) 3w
JamieArc Glad you liked this (and listened to the audio!). It was one of my top as well. 3w
Billypar Great review! Maybe it will convince me to give Arby's another shot? (my first and only time was probably around age 10 or so). @JamieArc I am in line for my library's audio copy, which won't come until after January, but it sounds worth the wait! 3w
Christine OMG I loved this one (though I'm not sure I ever posted on Litsy about it)!!! I'm just like you, hungry for more Rufi Thorpe, this was my first of hers! This was my Friday and Saturday. Dandelion, the cat I cat-sit, sitting in my lap as I read this unique and delightful story. I‘m delighted that it‘s on the #TOBlonglist. A unique story that includes wrestling, OnlyFans, and a young (and lonely) single mother. A character you root for and an excellent supporting cast. Now I want to find some of her other books.

DebinHawaii This is on my TBR & after reading your review, I want to push it up! 2mo
ChaoticMissAdventures So I am new to the idea of TOB (so many people on Litsy mention it) it looks like all the books published last year (2023)? I have read the webside but I am still a bit confused, how do you play, or do you just read the longlist after it is announced? 2mo

Suet624 @ChaoticMissAdventures I'm putting the link here to show you how they describe the event. https://www.tournamentofbooks.com/about The books have been published throughout the year. Following the longlist, they break it down to 16 books and just like a basketball tournament they then break the 16 into brackets and the books compete against each other. Various judges pick the winners of each bracket until the end when all the judges vote. (cont) (edited) 2mo

Suet624 @ChaoticMissAdventures I've followed the TOB for years and read some great books and some duds from the list and the judging can eventually feel pretty random but the event is always met with a great deal of excitement. The audio narration is great for this one. I wasn‘t sure what to expect when I started but I really liked it. Margo gets pregnant while in college. After struggling to find a job, try to afford/find daycare she decides to start an OnlyFans page. There were some bigger societal issues to make you think about. Like how hard it is to make money, how expensive & hard to find childcare is…women are in this constant push & pull of what society finds

ncsufoxes acceptable or not, especially when you become a mother. 2mo

Unintended pregnancy, Only Fans, professional wrestling — based on the description I would‘ve expected to hate this, but I really enjoyed it. Something about Margo is so likable — you just root for her to succeed. The book also covers some serious topics that I‘ll keep thinking about. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I love it when a book lives up to its hype!

I did a lot of driving over the last few days, so I decided to listen to MGMT and give myself a break from my current TBR. Although I don't have children and have never been pregnant, I found it very easy to empathize with Margo and to root for her success as a mother and a young woman trying to regain her footing. I loved the balance of the serious and silly. It totally worked for me!

This was an interesting look at content production as well as a coming of age story. At times it was hard to remember that Margo is only 20 during the story. It also has this weird meta thread about authors, POV and messaging. But for the most part the characters were fun and humor was mixed with the dark.

squirrelbrain Great! I‘m taking this (print version) to Gladstone‘s with me and I‘m really looking forward to it. 4mo
youneverarrived @sarahbarnes this would be great for a commute. It‘s narrated perfectly 🩷 4mo

Isn‘t this such a great cover? Margo isn‘t of legal age to drink, yet she‘s having a baby, trying to figure out her life and dealing with her not-too-interested mother and her ex-wrestler father who may or may not be a drug addict. It‘s a lot and I liked her voice as she tries to navigate her life from a very young perspective.

This is for September‘s book club. Because the hold list at the library is very long, I decided to purchase (from my fave indie @ WatermarkBooksandCafe) and share with my mother (😳) and her bestie. Mom got it first, said, “I guess I‘m a bit of a prude, but the writing is good.” oooookay. Um YEAH, even when a grownass adult, it‘s uncomfortable to know how your mother might react!! I ended up enjoying this very much and hope club discussion ⬇️

BkClubCare Will be lively. I want to discuss the concept pictured here: how a woman is either a victim/innocent or slut/knowledged. CONTROL 🤯 5mo

I was not sure what to expect with this book, but I definitely did not expect this plot. It was very modern-day: TikTok and Only Fans. It opened my eyes to a world of social media that I don't really pay attention to. Also, I highly enjoyed how it was set in the North OC of California, the cities you hardly read about in books. I knew the majority of the places that were mentioned. 4 ⭐️

My journey started in March when someone excitedly mentioned this June pub. I consider myself more than reasonably aware of books and authors but “Rufi Thorpe” was not in my book-bank. So I got the first book of hers available and that was *Dear Fang, With Love* - I am now on board to read more. 😊 THEN, my favorite book club bud pulled out the Jimmy Fallon Summer Book List and this was on it. Keep reading ⬇️

BkClubCare I tried to be neutral and not influence the vote of books to read but, yeah, I said I had this on my tbr. So now, this is Sept‘s book. I bought it today since the library holds will make it impossible to get before the second Tuesday in September 😏 and dropped it off at Mom‘s - she is the fastest reader. 5mo
marleed I loved this book. It proves how fiction opens my soul to humanity. 5mo
BkClubCare @marleed 💕 I am looking forward to it; curious what my club will think - my tastes are rarely in line. 5mo

I wanted to quit this book so many time... Couldn't understand why was is written? There were a few original thoughts about literature and writing, about maternity, about Church and St. Mary, but on the whole - it was boring and nonsensical, repetitive and not funny. This just wasn't for me...

Prairiegirl_reading I‘ve seen so many positive reviews but I‘m leary of this one. I appreciate this review. Sorry it didn‘t work for you. 5mo

AshleyHoss820 Yeah, I keep seeing this one pop up on my GR recommendations and I‘m not even tempted. Glad to know I‘m not off the mark. 2mo
