Alias Grace
Alias Grace: A Novel | Margaret Atwood
In Alias Grace, bestselling author Margaret Atwood has written her most captivating, disturbing, and ultimately satisfying work since The Handmaid's Tale. She takes us back in time and into the life of one of the most enigmatic and notorious women of the nineteenth century.Grace Marks has been convicted for her involvement in the vicious murders of her employer, Thomas Kinnear, and Nancy Montgomery, his housekeeper and mistress. Some believe Grace is innocent; others think her evil or insane. Now serving a life sentence, Grace claims to have no memory of the murders.Dr. Simon Jordan, an up-and-coming expert in the burgeoning field of mental illness, is engaged by a group of reformers and spiritualists who seek a pardon for Grace. He listens to her story while bringing her closer and closer to the day she cannot remember. What will he find in attempting to unlock her memories? Is Grace a female fiend? A bloodthirsty femme fatale? Or is she the victim of circumstances? From the Trade Paperback edition.

This narrator is terrible. Totally monotone and boring. The only reason I‘m continuing with listening is I want to make progress on the book and also work on a crochet project. 😫

It took me a little bit to really get hooked, but that came eventually. Atwood's portrayal of Grace is sympathetic, yet leaves the reader unsure about her guilt or innocence. For me, the most interesting character was Dr. Simon Jordan. His interest in Grace became slightly more than academic, and he was not always the upstanding gentleman; but he shady sude just made him more interesting. #audiobook #audible

I‘ve been fighting a cold for a week now, today I lost the battle. I just was at the doctor‘s and am staying home from work for three days- which is exactly what I needed! Next week will be super busy, so it is good that I can recharge my batteries before that. And I‘m sure with three days of sleeping, tea and books I will be fit again on friday💪🏼💪🏼

Current #audiobook. Not really digging the narrator, but the story is pretty good.

Scochrane26 I‘ve read this book about 3 times over the years. I also loved the miniseries. 3w
Kimberlone The narrator of this audiobook is the actress who plays the main character in the Netflix miniseries adaptation 3w
cherinium @Kimberlone I did not realize that. I obviously can't speak to her performance in the miniseries, but I'm finding her narration to be rather "flat." Also, she has a lisp that I find very distracting. When I am finished listening, I'll have to check out the show. 3w
cherinium @Scochrane26 This is my first exposure to the book. I'll check out the miniseries when I am finished. 3w
Scochrane26 @cherinium Hope you end up liking the book. I love Handmaid‘s tale, but this is my favorite Atwood. 3w

2010 was a great reading year for me, discovering some of my favourites. It was a year of Atwood, including my first read of Alias Grace. And some top notch non-fiction titles!

The right is me in 2010 at my oldest friend's wedding. It was the first time I bought myself a beautiful, expensive dress as a treat for such a special event. I wore it the once and then my dear pup shredded it 😣

Perhaps the best Atwood book - at least for my Victorian-loving, luscious-writing-slave, history-adoring self. As claustrophobic as The Handmaid's Tale, and as piercingly intense too - spearing you like focused sunlight.

I previously rated this book as so-so, because I found it a little hard to get through. It‘s been a while since I read it though, and the part where Grace muses, “that is the same with all quilts, you can see them two different ways by looking at the dark pieces, or else the light,” STUCK WITH ME. This was a really interesting book. It was based around a true story from the Toronto area in the 19th century. A woman was charged with murder, but escaped the noose. Years into her sentence a psychiatrist spoke with her in an effort to determine her sanity.

It always feels good when I finish a book that has been waiting on my TBR, in this case, 11 months. I bought Alias Grace last September in Copenhagen, so this book has already made quite a journey.
Alias Grace is my 2nd Atwood book. I thought Handmaids Tale doesn‘t really deserve all the hype it receives due to current political events. AG is much better written, with a better story.

Mehso-so

Ultimately between pan and so-so for me. The writing was clever and I enjoyed the true crime aspect but I felt like parts of it were long and tedious. I wanted to keep reading Grace‘s story but then it would veer off into Dr. Jordan‘s story (which was weird) and less enjoyable. I enjoyed The Handmaid‘s Tale so i will check out more of her work but this was, overall, just meh for me.

A very atmospheric novel that revolves around the murder and some deeper themes, like gender, class, mental health ... I liked how everything in this novel is up for interpretation, and how the author left the empty space between two different narrators (and dynamic structure) for the reader to decide/ponder for himself about guilt and innocence. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

I‘m supposed to be packing to fly to New Orleans tomorrow. Notice the empty suitcase. 🤣 Instead I cuddled with Hank the Book Sniffer and finished the last half of this book I couldn‘t put down.

I thought this was a really good fictionalization of an 1840‘s “true crime” story. The author‘s afterward made all the difference in my opinion of this book for me. She clearly delineated what is and is not known and what was straight up conjecture.

“Grace Marks (c. July 1828 – after c. 1873) was an Irish-Canadian maid who was involved in the 1843 murder of her Richmond Hill, Ontario, employer Thomas Kinnear and his housekeeper, Nancy Montgomery. Her conviction for the murder of Kinnear was controversial, and sparked much debate about whether Marks was actually instrumental in the murder, or merely an unwitting accessory.”

Birdsong28 @Ms_T It's ok. I am, as I have heard lots about this one and it is a good price as it should be nearly £30!!! I will see how the narrator is ok as I always check, they make or break a story. 😘📚📖 9mo

Pickpick

I decided to give this book a go after binging on the Netflix series. It took me ages to read it, but I genuinely thought Atwood's writing was beautiful and insightful. There were times I just didn't feel as if the story was moving along...the quilt/patchwork motif is certainly intriguing.

Tamra I loved it too and long overdue for a reread. 10mo
amok I read this one a decade (or even two?) ago. Loved it!!! One of the few books I've ever read twice. 7mo

This Marie Kondo method is working in my favor! I dropped off bags of clothing only to realize that I bet people are dumping books. So I walk into the Goodwill and found 3 books in great shape for $.99 and I grabbed them. 😂

Riveted_Reader_Melissa Great exchange to me! 🎉 11mo
