Chaplin invites you to his Ted Talk about one of the fantasy genre's most underrated authors, Tad Williams! 😹 He's so fantastic and I can never understand why more people aren't reading his works! The Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn series - the first book is pictured here - is particularly excellent! Especially if you love old school fantasy epics! πŸ’•πŸ“š #catsoflitsy #chaplin

My mini chard tart experiment was a success! Hello, leafy greens for breakfast.

I‘m gonna push on through the last 80 pages of THE DRAGONBONE CHAIR today. While I‘ve enjoyed some parts, this reread has been way more of a slog than a delight. I‘ll give STONE OF FAREWELL 50-100 pages, but if it hits me the same way as TDC did I‘ll be bailing.

I‘ll also keep thinking lots of tl;dr thoughts about how Teenage Me and Adult Me‘s tastes differ.

Larkken There are a number of books that I adored as a teenager that I‘m afraid to reread and ruin the memory for just this reason 😭 3y
mandarchy What is a chard tart? I love chard! Is that chicken on top? I'm off to Google this... 3y
xicanti @Larkken it‘s weirdβ€”for the most part, I‘ve found I can still reread the stuff I read multiple times when I was young, but the books I only read once are way less likely to resonate with Adult Me. I‘m pretty sure this book is objectively better than some of the other teenage reads I still like, but it still failed to click with me. Sadness. 3y
xicanti @mandarchy it‘s actually a sweet chard tart! I can‘t find the link to the recipe, but it combines wilted and blanched chard with poached raisins, almonds, cinnamon, sugar, and an egg in a cookie-like crust, with apple on top. I usually make a full size, lidded version, but decided to try mini open faced tarts this time. 3y
mandarchy @xicanti is okay, I would prefer a savory version. There are so many foods I can't eat, apples and fructose being some of them. It looks delicious though. πŸ˜‹ 3y

My uncle sent over some homemade focaccia and I was honourbound to eat it while I finished another chunk of THE DRAGONBONE CHAIR. I‘m a little more caught up in the epic sweep now I‘m closer to the end, but I‘m still gonna need a break before I can finish the last hundred-odd pages.

Texreader Yum!! 3y

Lunch with THE DRAGONBONE CHAIR. I keep slipping in and out of this one, y‘all. I like it well enough, but I LOVELOVELOVED it when I was fourteen and I can‘t seem to recapture that, even as a nostalgia thing.

Angeles That has happened to me with a few of my childhood/teenage favorites. It makes clear how much you change even though you feel you are the same 3y
humouress πŸ˜• I loved it too. But I remember it as an epic door stopper and have been reluctant to re-read it - although I‘m planning to, soon, before I read the new series. 3y
xicanti @Angeles in this case, I think being the same age as the protagonist helped me forge a fast connection with him, which carried me through some of the slower patches. Now I‘m way older and way less patient with the setup scenes you get in so many epic fantasies. 3y
xicanti @humouress it‘s verrrrry long, and it feels it. I‘ve found some chapters really engaging, but a lot of them feel like setup for the wider conflict to come. I‘m not as patient with that sort of thing now as I was when I was new to epic fantasy. 3y
Angeles Interesting. I had not thought about that 3y

Three are soooo so many books I haven't yet read...and here I am re-reading this again. 😝

I can't help myself. It's comfort. It's home. It's...safe. πŸ₯°

In my defense I'm listening to the audio this go-around, which I have never done before soooo... πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

Anyone else re-read for comfort? What's your go to?

LazyOwl Yes, definitely. I'm doing a reread of the Abhorsen books. I also like to reread the Belgariad and the Deathgate Cycle (first book is tagged) books and a few others as well. 3y
GrilledCheeseSamurai @LazyOwl πŸ‘πŸ‘ Nice. I should totally add Deathgate on my 'to re-read' list I have fond but distant memories of it. I'm listening to Dragonbone Chair as audio but physically I'm re-reading Black Sun Rising which is the 1st book of the Coldfire trilogy (tagged). 2020 & 2021 have been all about re-reads for me! I should re-visit Eddings too! It's been ages! 3y
Orchid_1000bookmarks I‘m re reading The Signature of All Things by Elizabeth Gilbertβ€”β€” this is a comfort for me because I didn‘t really like a few bookmarks I read previously and reading a very well written book is so much comfort for me. 3y
Soubhiville I reread sometimes. I‘m a fantasy series rereader mostly. The Harry Potter books, The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings, and Jacqueline Carey‘s Kushiel series. I‘m not sure it‘s for comfort consciously, I just like returning to my favorite stories. (I get this from my dad who was always reading LOTR. Literally always.) (edited) 3y
intothehallofbooks I love rereading. My favorite comfort reread is Daughter of the Forest by Juliet Marillier. I‘ve read it a zillion times and find new things about it every time. It‘s SO GOOD and reading it feels like a soft, warm blanket to me. Also, The Hobbit because it‘s pretty much perfect. 3y

I‘m gonna post a book (or series) from my TBR every day until I‘ve shared the lot. No descriptions. No explanations. Just a whole bunch of books I haven‘t read yet.

This is Day 46.

(Okay, let‘s ditch the no-explanations thing here. These are the only rereads on La TBR. I fell hard for them 23 years ago, took ages to source my own copies from thrift stores &similar, and never actually reread β€˜em once I got β€˜em. πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ)

3. It‘s sort of cheating, but I can‘t believe I haven‘t reread THE DRAGONBONE CHAIR yet. I‘ve had it sitting here for like 15 years.

After lugging this around from move to move for the last ten years I finally have sat down and read it! It took me some time to get into it, I thought it began a little slow and I didn‘t immediately like the main character. I quickly changed my mind, and this had almost everything I love about a classic fantasy novel. Looking forward to finishing the series!

Who recommends this and why? I‘ve heard good things about it but I‘m not sure if I want to read it.

RamsFan1963 I have the whole trilogy, but all 4 books (the last one is in two parts) are such chunksters, I haven't gotten up the will to plunge in. I've only heard good things about them, maybe they will be my next big series read. 4y
Branwen I recommend it highly! πŸ˜€πŸ“šπŸ’• It's old school epic fantasy, and even though it's super long, reading it felt very comforting to me. Tad Williams' writing is really good too! I hope that helps! 4y
MrT I‘m up to book 3. It‘s taken me 28 years to get round to reading them (been on my TBR and shelves that long) and now I‘m reading one part a year. I‘ll make book 3 one of my autumn/winter reads, I‘ve also read his Otherland and Shadowmarch series. Great epic fantasy writer. 4y
EddieF Have also read them but, without wanting to spoil it, I find the atmosphere building up to the climax excellent, but the actual events right at the end of the book left me a tad (pun unintended!) disappointed, felt it could have been more. 3y

#7Days7Books Day 2.

'Books that left an impression on me.'

This will be no surprise to you guys by now. I'm a massive Tad Williams fan and the best way to describe it is, how people feel about LOTR's is how I feel about the Memory Sorrow and Thorn series.

The world of Osten Ard has been part of my imagination for almost as long as I can remember & remains to this day as one of my favorite places to visit. πŸ’™

Kenyazero This one's been on my TBR for a while. It might even be so high up the list that I own it. Might need to move to the picking it upstage! πŸ€” 4y
dragondrool I've only read the first one so far. It's been so long ago I might have to reread it before delving back into the second book, which I started right after I finished Dragonbone, but only got about a quarter of the way through. I also need to finish Otherland. I also loved War of the Flowers, though I didn't expect to. Tad Williams rocks.
4y
susurran I feel the same way about Osten Ard, I've been visiting there since I was 18 (I'm 51 now) and it feels as much a part of my imaginative life as the Hundred Acre Wood or Oz; just a completely realized world, and Tad is such a truly wonderful person. Can't wait for the final volume of the new trilogy. 3y

#NYBirthdayGiveaway @LazyOwl

Another one of my favorite Fantasy books/series is Tad Williams Memory Sorrow and Thorn trilogy. Prolly even my number 1.

You know how people go bananas over LOTR's (myself included)? Well, this series is my LOTR's.

What I mean to say is - I'm obsessed with it. It's usually my go to for 'best of lists' and I love, love it!

And the best thing is, Tad just started a 2nd trilogy last year continuing the story. ❀️😍❀️

TricksyTails Another series I need to start! Adding to the TBR! 6y

GrilledCheeseSamurai @TricksyTails That's a tough call. Both are great and both are...I dont mean this in a bad way...but both are kind of slow burns. Meaning that between some great action there is LOTS of character development. Some people stumble with that. Personally? Well...this one is my all time fav for fantasy...so yeah. Either way you go - great reading! πŸ‘Œ 6y
TricksyTails Hahaha did that answer my question? I'm not sure...πŸ˜‚ 6y
GrilledCheeseSamurai @TricksyTails Tad is VERY wordy. In all his books. But so is Hobb's. Tad Williams and Neil Gaiman are pretty much tied as my personal favorite authors. Robin Hobb's is great and I LOVE her books, but she is a little further down the list of favs. πŸ˜‰ 6y
GrilledCheeseSamurai @Cinfhen thank you. πŸ€—πŸ€—πŸ€— 6y
TricksyTails Got it! πŸ‘ Thanks! Maybe an easier question, this series first or Otherland? 6y
GrilledCheeseSamurai @TricksyTails Well...Otherland is more modern/scifi and MS&T is straight up fantasy. Both are excellent. So whichever you prefer. MS&T is shorter then Otherland too. Not counting this new trilogy that he's started. I'm kinda shitting the bed on giving you proper answers aren't I? πŸ˜‚ 6y
TricksyTails πŸ˜‚ It'll be my last tough question of the night. Thank you for your input! πŸ€— 6y
GrilledCheeseSamurai @TricksyTails I'm apt to say Otherland but only because of the #OtherlandBuddyRead that a few of us are just starting so you'd have peeps to talk about it with. πŸ‘ 6y
