In 1932, a pregnant Margret Wittmer moved with her husband and young stepson to Floreana, a small island in the Galapagos. They believed that getting out of the city and going back to nature was the only way to cure their sickly child. This is her memoir of how the family managed to survive then thrive on this basically uninhabited (at the time) island. This is a story about strong people who had more courage and fortitude than I could ever have.

A pretty short and very enjoyable science book about the Galápagos Islands and everything on them (including the people). I think if you‘re going to the Galápagos (yes, I am doing that), this book is a must-read primer for understanding the formation of the islands, all the life on them and in the ocean around them, and exactly why they are so unusual.

This book was especially hard to read due to the fact that it was written during a timeframe I and everyone else in the world would like to forget. I get it that the author needed to capitalize or get over her writing slump, but I could not fly by as quickly as I've done through her other novels because there is still a lot of pain and misinformation about COVID.

Ugh, this is so frustrating. I love a good classic sci-fi story, especially when it‘s talking about catastrophic events happening on earth and to the environment. I just couldn‘t get on with the writing style I think. I can see where the author was taking us and what they were trying to say but I just couldn‘t connect with any of it. I‘ve been trudging through this book for so long and I just need to give up.

I loved rereading this. The audiobook was wonderful. I started it New Year‘s Eve and on January 1st I caught COVID for the first time. It has made reading this (her book about COVID) far more interesting! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Speaking about Darwin's Finches (on my last post), if anyone is interested in the theory of evolution and Darwin's work, you might enjoy the tagged book.
Now, it's been almost two decades since I've read this (and it was a translation) so I was very young then and I'm hoping the writing isn't actually as dry as I remember 😅
Still, it's an interesting book and I'd love to read it again soon.
