Wish You Were Here
Wish You Were Here | Jodi Picoult
From the #1 New York Times bestselling author comes a deeply moving novel about the resilience of the human spirit in a moment of crisis.Diana O'Toole is perfectly on track. She will be married by thirty, done having kids by thirty-five, and move out to the New York City suburbs, all while climbing the professional ladder in the cutthroat art auction world. She's an associate specialist at Sotheby's now, but her boss has hinted at a promotion if she can close a deal with a high-profile client. She's not engaged just yet, but she knows her boyfriend, Finn, a surgical resident, is about to propose on their romantic getaway to the Galpagos--days before her thirtieth birthday. Right on time. But then a virus that felt worlds away has appeared in the city, and on the eve of their departure, Finn breaks the news: It's all hands on deck at the hospital. He has to stay behind. You should still go, he assures her, since it would be a shame for all of their nonrefundable trip to go to waste. And so, reluctantly, she goes. Almost immediately, Diana's dream vacation goes awry. Her luggage is lost, the Wi-Fi is nearly nonexistent, and the hotel they'd booked is shut down due to the pandemic. In fact, the whole island is now under quarantine, and she is stranded until the borders reopen. Completely isolated, she must venture beyond her comfort zone. Slowly, she carves out a connection with a local family when a teenager with a secret opens up to Diana, despite her father's suspicion of outsiders. In the Galpagos Islands, where Darwin's theory of evolution by natural selection was formed, Diana finds herself examining her relationships, her choices, and herself--and wondering if when she goes home, she too will have evolved into someone completely different.

4 STARS - Set during the current pandemic, Picoult's story may hit close to home for some readers but I respect the amount of research she did and how she pulls together and engaging story that will give readers much to discuss.

I‘ve read every book she has written and loved most of them, but this one was just ok. It‘s a story of a woman who has it all getting marooned on an island during Covid. It‘s a journey but I didn‘t find her interesting enough, at least for the first half of the book. It does pick up in the second half after a major twist. And I mean a major twist!

Another complex story from Jodi Picoult. This novel had unexpected twists that left me thoughtful (and sometimes in tears). Though the subject matter (covid-19) felt a bit too close to home at times, I thoroughly enjoyed the book.

I enjoyed the introspection Hannah has during the story and Picoult does not disappoint in leaving me with a poignant and timely message. However, I jdon‘t think I was ready to relive those early months of the pandemic so I didn‘t enjoy this as much as I had hoped. This is a solid Jodi Picoult book and if you are ready for the Covid flashbacks you will probably enjoy it!

Gifted to me by my friend, but thinking it‘s more in my daughter‘s wheelhouse. It‘s HEAVILY rooted in the early days of 2020 and im thinking/ feeling it‘s STILL TOO much. I don‘t really want to read about Covid. I‘m hoping to exchange for a different title.

Caroline2 I‘m the same. I can‘t read any books about covid or lockdowns etc. I want to escape all that, not relive it!! 😬 1mo
Cinfhen Yeah, especially this one is going through the early days of Covid like a historian. It‘s wayyyyy too much @Caroline2 luckily Audible let me exchange the title. 1mo

LiteraryinLawrence I just read this, and I liked it but I‘ll say that if your instinct is to skip it, you should. It was a bit triggering about Covid, especially given where we are again now. 4w
Cinfhen I bailed early on @JenReadsAlot so maybe at some point there is comfort but like @LiteraryinLawrence said, with where we are heading again I didn‘t want to read about the first lockdown- it‘s still too raw 😪 4w
JenReadsAlot Well I haven't started it yet, so clearly I'm not ready either! 4w
Cinfhen Ha @JenReadsAlot hopefully when you get to it, we‘ll all be in a better place 💓💓💓 4w
BookBabe I would‘ve loved to read it DURING the first lockdown, but now I‘m needing a break from hearing/thinking about it…I think down the road I‘d want to read it though! 4w
Cinfhen In the last week I‘ve read about 6 or 7 books that have all included some form of the pandemic within the story @BookBabe I can‘t decide if it‘s going to be a trend or if it‘s “necessary” inclusion !?!! This particular book felt too heavy (for me) as we are about to re-enter some sort of fifth wave 😩 4w

I really enjoyed this one. I always think of Picoult as formulaic, but when I do pick one up I am always quickly hooked and this one was no different. The settings in both NYC and the Galapagos during the worst of the Covid outbreak were fascinating and at times heartbreaking. This is a book I will be thinking about for a while and would be a great choice for book clubs. I gave it 4/5 stars.

DebinHawaii @Graciouswarriorprincess Hi Anna Louise, I am you #jolabokaswap sender. It was a bit of a surprise to me when I got a swap package because for some strange reason, I didn‘t get my match email or Google Doc response & had it in my head that I goofed & didn‘t submit before the deadline. When I got the package I freaked & then had some challenges with getting my email responses that @MaleficentBookDragon sent in my mailbox. Long story (not that) ⬇️ (edited) 1mo
DebinHawaii … short. Thanks to the help of a few Litsy friends I was able to get your info from Michelle. I wanted you to know that you have 2-3 packages coming from me from all from Amazon. The books may be together or not but are scheduled to arrive Tuesday. The chocolate is coming Wed or Thurs. All are supposed to be in gift bags. I apologize for the down-to-wire & that it‘s an Amazon send. I just didn‘t want you to think you were not getting a package.🎄 (edited) 1mo

I read this in one sitting tonight. It was immersive and thought-provoking and definitely brought up many emotions. I recommend it but might suggest waiting until some day (I hope) when we‘re not in the midst of a surge in Covid cases. This story can be triggering.

Update: I don‘t think I was effusive enough last night. This book had a really surprising twist and I‘ll be thinking about it for a long time! Good job, Jodi!

When I heard this book was written about the pandemic I didn't know if I wanted to read it. We have all been living it for almost two years. But it is Jodi Picoult so I thought I would give it a try. Well I am glad that I did. I loved that she talked to front line workers who have been fighting this pandemic as well as survivors of COVID. Also in true Jodi fashion I didn't see the twist coming at all. Wanted the epilogue to be a little longer!

Until she doesn‘t have anything. COVID interrupts and Diana is separated from it all - stranded on the Galápagos Islands. I enjoyed this story and found it very thought provoking. I particularly liked the first half of the book which was set in the Galapagos. I loved the setting and the descriptions of the scenery. I wasn‘t so keen on the parts of the book set in New York during the pandemic, as some of the scenes are quite harrowing. It‘s a beautifully written story with a twist in the tale. “Life is what happens to you when you‘re busy making other plans.”

Wish You Were Here is a timely novel about one woman‘s shift in priorities after the world changed in the face of Covid-19. Although entertaining for a large audience this novel presented some serious philosophical ideas about our perceptions of the world and how there is still so much more we don‘t know beyond what we can see. I really enjoyed Wish You Were Here and I will be thinking about it for a long time.

Since my 2004 discovery of Picoult‘s books, I‘m always looking forward to reading something new from her! I didn‘t realize going in that this would be a COVID-centric book, but I really had a hard time putting it down. Main character, Diana, has a life smoothly on track with her plans- a promotion at Sotheby‘s is on the horizon and her surgical residency boyfriend seems certain to propose on their trip to the Galapagos- but the book opens 3/13/20…

Cinfhen This one sounds good!! 2mo
TorieStorieS @Cinfhen I read it in just about one sitting! I haven‘t enjoyed her more recent novels as much as her earlier ones, but I think this one is good! I heard a rumor that it may be a #BOTM add-on for December, too! 2mo
Cinfhen Ohhh, that‘s good to know!! I‘m really NOT a fan anymore. Her books became too preachy and heavy handed but this one set during Covid sounds too good to skip 2mo
TorieStorieS @Cinfhen I know what you mean!! There are a few moments where she can‘t help herself with some comments in that vein, but it is toned down quite a bit from some of her others! I hope you do enjoy it! 2mo

This is part pandemic story, part travelogue, part “finding yourself” tale, with a dash of romance thrown in. It pulled me in and spun me around. With the exception of one plot pivot towards the end, I liked it a lot. Picoult does her background research and it shows. But she didn‘t lose sight of her characters‘ heart and resilience.

But it‘s early 2020 and COVID-19 is just about to explode. Finn has to cancel his plans because the hospital is on “all hands on deck” mode. A story in the time of Covid written in different points of view..those of the front line workers, family members who have loved ones in long term health care facilities, partners of the front line workers, and patients themselves.Although we are still in the midst of the pandemic, and many lives have been lost JP gives us the silver lining in her story that so many readers need at this time, that makes this book so beautiful!

Jodi Picoult is one of my favorite authors and I was extremely excited to get my hands on an early copy of her newest book. This book set in the time of Covid-19 and is highly thought out with a lot of science but has a strong story of woman trying to navigate her world, trying to get promoted in her role and finally get engaged to the man she loves when this pandemic hits.
