Project Hail Mary | Andy Weir
post image
Pickpick

I loved every minute of Project Hail Mary. I was so excited to find an arc at work and honestly couldn‘t read it fast enough. Andy Weir goes back to his roots with PHM and pulls everything that was fun and compelling about The Martian into a new story that will make you laugh and want to cry. As always, Weir discusses the philosophical question of the good of the one over the good of the many. I can‘t wait to buy a finished copy!

myellenbee I loved The Martian and Artemis. I will be checking out Hail Mary Pass. 3y
myellenbee I've read and listened to Artemis. Rosario Dawson is one of THE best narrators I've heard on audible. She made Artemis even better. 3y

Between starting my new job and getting my first COVID vaccine shot, I did not accomplish my #AwesomeApril readathon goals, BUT I did have a great first week, bought 7 books, and had minimal side effects to the dose. Treating myself to sushi and a Starbucks drink and reading outside feels like the perfect way to end my weekend before going back to the real world.

Gissy Book shopping📚📚📚📚great medicine! Fabulous treatment with that 🍱 sushi. 🤗 3y

A Thousand Ships | Natalie Haynes
post image
Pickpick

Perfect, another book for me to never stop yelling about. This was beautiful. A Thousand Ships is a retelling of The Iliad and The Odyssey from the perspectives of the women involved, and casts them as the true heroes of the saga. I think enjoyment of this tale definitely relies on the reader being familiar with the events of the Iliad/Odyssey and parts of The Oresteia, but it‘s so worth it.

I finished my MLIS in December and have been job hunting for the last few months, but I‘m so excited to share that I was just hired at one of my local indie bookstores!! TEArificbooks Your pile is full of contemporary romances. I would also recommend you read some Nora Roberts and the Bridgerton series since they are so popular and you will get lots of inquiries for them. I find reading a variety of books from the genre helps me connect with people when they ask for recommendations. 3y
cleoh @Riveted_Reader_Melissa thank you! I‘ve read and enjoyed Fangirl, and Simon has been on my list for a while. I‘ll make sure I bump it up! 3y
cleoh @mdm139 yeah, I haven‘t found a fantasy romance series/author that I love yet but I love the idea because I‘m a fan of fantasy. I want to read more subgenres, I think I‘m just drawn to contemporary more. Julia Quinn and Nora Roberts are big names in the genre, so thanks for remind me of them! 3y
Bookwormjillk Yay! Congratulations! 3y
TEArificbooks For fantasy romance I love Kerrelyn Sparks. I liked her vampire/shapeshifter series but love her new “embraced” series. 3y
Jas16 Congratulations! 3y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @cleoh For fantasy romance....try Kate Daniels, Ilona Andrews is one of my go-to recommendations. She plays with multiple mythical pantheons of characters, lots of fantasy characters (Were‘s Vamps) and she twists some in unexpected ways. The romance is there but secondary, and a long build over multiple books. 3y

Bookzombie Congratulations!!! I‘m going to toss Lisa Kleypas, Courtney Milan, Beverly Jenkins, and Cat Sebastian on your pile. I have only read one so far, but also Alyssa Cole. She has both contemporary and historical. I hope you love your new job! (edited) 3y

She Memes Well: Essays | Quinta Brunson
post image
Pickpick

Quinta Brunson is one of my favourite BuzzFeed alumni, and reading this felt like talking to a friend after a long day. Her essays span from childhood to present day, chronicling the important moments in her life and how she became the Quinta we (love to) see on the internet. It opens a door into her world, all the good and bad parts, challenges us to pursue our dreams and fall in love, counsels us on how to deal if (and/or when) we become a meme.

I just? Everything about this was perfect?

This story is the perfect combination of Pride and Prejudice-esque angst, magic, and high society drama. The first part was a bit slow, but the slow burn was worth it. I will read literally anything Silvia Moreno-Garcia writes, and I'm pretty sure it'll be perfect every single time.

I say perfect a lot in this review but I have no other words.

📚 I‘ve finally gotten more into adult fantasy!

Prairiegirl_reading There was a moment where graphic novels scratched the itch in my Covid brain so I loved Good Talk, March and They Called Us Enemy. All so good. I also loved The Switch and Ragged Company. All books I don‘t think I even knew about before lockdown. My reading life has changed a lot in the past year! 3y
Scochrane26 I think The House in the Cerulean Sea has been my favorite. I would have loved it in regular times, but during the pandemic, it gave me some hope & love in humanity. 3y

I‘m so excited for the Canada Reads debate to start on Monday! All of these books were exceptional; Hench was my favourite by far, but I want Jonny Appleseed to win. I read TMB as an ARC and enjoyed it, but not everything worked for me. TTMAF was beautiful but I got lost in some of the science. JA was a devastating character study, and BHPB was an intense story that spans multigenerational grief. I highly recommend all of them.
