Someone said that while reading a classic novel, just read it as you would any other “current” book. And I think that‘s what my problem was before: I would try too hard to read it, if that makes sense. Absolutely loving this book! Ooooo that Mrs. Danvers. She gives me the creeps.

Although my photo sucks, this was one of the best gifts. 💚 I'm reading classics with co-workers and @LocalTXLibrarian gifted me the books we're reading this year and wrapped each one. She also included a personalized bookmark and an awesome book bag. She's the best. 😍

Today I'm unwrapping January, which contains Rebecca. I can't wait to read it again.

Here‘s a peek at the bookish gifts I received this year!

Illustrated HP editions were all from my fiancé.

Leatherbound (with gilt edges) Poems by John Keats from @Saknicole

Folio edition (!) of Rebecca from my mom. Came with the Folio Diary.

At the top of the stack, a set of bookplates I received from my coworker as thanks for writing a letter of rec for her and a $5 B&N gift card from my nephew.

Now to make space on my shelves!

Saknicole @Kimberlone yah! Nice work Jake! I love the illustrated editions! 1mo

I almost went with a so-so rating, but I‘ve changed my mind. I think the issue is that this book is SO culturally pervasive, that it‘s hard to avoid some knowledge of the plot. The writing was engaging enough that I basically stayed up all night reading and didn‘t even realize it was 2 a.m. I think she weaves a good tale, and it is worth reading an OG. ☺️ 224/1,001 #1001Books October‘s Double #BookSpin

This reread was my #Doublespin pick this month, and I think I enjoyed it even more the second time around. I wasn‘t focused on the mystery, so I could just appreciate all the delicate observations and delicious foreshadowing. It‘s rare that such an internal book is as compelling. This remains one of my favorites. I‘d really like to read the rest of her catalog. Also reading from this beautiful copy definitely enhanced the experience!

I loved this! It's been a long while since I last fell in love with a classic. I've heard good things about Daphne du Maurier but it took forever for me to actually pick up one of her books. Maybe the most powerful thing in this book is the atmosphere. It keeps the reader engaged to the story the whole time. I can't remember many classics that have done that to me before. ❤️

It has to be Rebecca. I read it for the first time as a teen & was obsessed; I kept reading it over & over for a few years. That haunting opening line; the Gothic atmosphere; the glamour, dread, & mystery. How it shifts from the heady holiday vibes of Monte Carlo to the terrifying yet opulent gloom of Manderley.

Probably worth noting that I was similarly obsessed with Jane Eyre 😆 #sensingatheme

vivastory I know that some people think that the ending is rushed, but IMO the entire book is perfect 6mo

I had forgotten how beautifully she could write and although I liked the movie, there were so many treasures in her descriptions and way of putting things that were on a different level than the visual experience. Thanks for the tag @PaperbackPirate ! 😊

#Two4Tuesday

1. If “moody” means depressing, then no. I don‘t like depressing books. For example, I‘ve never read Tess of the D‘Urbervilles. I‘m not sure I could take it. But if “moody” means atmospheric, then yes!

2. The tagged book is wonderfully atmospheric and in that sense, moody. The Cornish coast, Manderley‘s East Wing that no one uses, creepy Mrs. Danvers, Rebecca‘s memory haunting the pages...

PaperbackPirate Thank you for sharing! 😒 (moody emoji) 8mo
Ruthiella @PaperbackPirate It was fun to think about! 😃 8mo
TheSpineView Thanks for playing! 8mo
Leniverse I'm the same, and haven't read Tess of the D'Urbervilles for that exact same reason. If I know in advance that the book is going to be sad and end badly, I just can't do it. (With some exceptions, like Greek tragedies.) I need to feel a bit of hope along the way. 8mo
Ruthiella Always nice to find someone who understands! There are other readers who love the misery. Maybe they find it cathartic? 😃 I have to say that A Fine Balance by Rohinton Mistry is an exception to my rule. I loved that book even though it was quite sad. 8mo

#OnThisDay in 1907 a woman was born who would go on to craft one of the most hauntingly beautiful opening sentences in literature. Daphne DuMaurier published her first novel at the age of 24, and in 1938 her novel Rebecca was an immediate bestseller and has remained in print (and adaptations) ever since. One of few books I‘ve been able to get through via audiobook! The young Mrs De Winter was clearly young, and a few times that was tiresome. But the descriptions of Manderley, the gardens, the rooms, put you in a time and place. The suspense was well foreshadowed and then revealed. Now to watch the Hitchcock version! I‘m also curious if anyone knows about the Brazilian author who claims that Du Maurier plagiarized for this book.
