Kitchen (Original)
Kitchen (Original) | Banana Yoshimoto
A lyrical tale about loss and grief and familial love. When college student Mikage Sakurai is orphaned by the death of her grandmother, she is rescued from loneliness and grief by Yuichi, a young flower shop delivery man, and discovers that families come in many shapes . . . and can be found in many places.

there are aspects to Yoshimoto's writing I enjoy (people coping after the death of a loved one, finding amusement in mundane things, forging unexpected relationships) but the 1st story killed off the only interesting character + focused on a forced romance with 0 chemistry and the 2nd story mostly plodded along 😩 on top of that, I felt the translation job for this book was pretty stilted and amateurish

My latest book haul(s). I was so happy to find most of these books at my library‘s used book store. Man and His Symbols was even free since it had been written in with pen! All of these books are recommendations (by title or author) by members of BTS except for The Secret History and Musicophilia. I‘m getting into some new genres and it‘s really fun! Currently I‘m reading Kitchen, such an interesting read. #bts #bookhaul #magicshop #jung

This was interesting. It felt like there was a lot of detail in such a short story. It's not a favorite but I did like the writing and how close I was able to get to the character to feel her emotions with her.

*Kitchen* is a novella that follows with a short story *Moonlight Shadow* — both are a lovely, yet somewhat quirky (but not too weirdly so), examination of love and loss. This book will stay with me a long time ❤️.

Kitchen is about a young woman who, after her grandmother‘s death, moves into an apartment belonging to a friend and his mother. Both Kitchen and Moonlight Serenade, the companion story, are both about the aftermath of loss. They‘re both beautifully melancholy and a little strange, though I think I liked Moonlight Serenade more.

Interesting way to explore grief, deep sadness and loneliness ... but this story left me totally unaffected. 🤷‍♀️ I can‘t explain why, because I do think that Mikage is cute character, that the prose is effective, and I like warm atmosphere throughout the story, but still - this story was not for me.

emilyhaldi I agree, the MC felt very distant in this book. Interesting perspective on grief but hard to connect fully. 10mo
Simona @4thhouseontheleft I participate in three challenges, so in this year my approach is slightly opportunistic🤗 10mo
Simona @emilyhaldi I have read a few reviews (just to see if there's something in this story that I don t understand) and her writing/narration style is often compared with Murakami‘s. In Murakami‘s stories MC is (almost) always distant, observer of the life and I like them ... but in this story this distant position wasn‘t enough for connection. 10mo

A really awesome little novella, exploring non-nuclear families, gender, grief and some decent queer representation (late 80s, so not perfect but). Read for uni and I really did love it, the protagonist being cared for by a guy and his mother, after her grandmother passes, and later, in turn, taking care of others.

Loved this novella. The tone is warm, inviting and quirky with an easy writing style. The characters are innocent and non judgmental, with simple, matter-of-fact observations that reminded me of Murakami, but with a female sensibility. Depth and intelligence behind the simple style. Loved the clean, economical writing and interesting characters.

A short, sparsely written book that is deeper than it appears on the surface.

I liked the look at how people cope with grief and loss and how they learn to move on. Also liked the exploration of what makes a family and different kinds of love.

There are 2 stories continued is this little gem of a book. Kitchen is the first, longer story about love and loss and grief and food and sacrifice and empathy and loneliness. The second story is called Moonlight Shadow and is about love and loss and empathy and magic. I loved both stories, and, although it is a translation, I feel the author‘s style comes through. She writes with precision and simplicity and warmth. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ #reading1001

My first book with #bookout (though I was 20 pages in when I started, so my stats are a bit skewed). I am undecided on the app, but enjoyed this book. Yoshimoto‘s writing feels a bit stiff, but it somehow works and is distinctive (though maybe this is partly the translation? I think I often find books from Japanese to be this way). Anyway, an interesting take on love and loss and going on. #1001books read 196.

chrissy.ww I‘ve discovered that the app also allows you to save the photos in square format, which is much better for Litsy and Insta photos 😂 2y
AudreyMorris @chrissy.ww I could not find that option—I figured it was part of the paid version! 2y
chrissy.ww @AudreyMorris Oh! Maybe I have the paid version. The option only just popped up for me recently, when I hit share, it offered it to me. I do love the way it lets me track my reading time. One think I have found handy is that you can set the amount of pages for the book. So if there's a heap of crap at the back you're not going to read, you change the amount of pages to suit that point. 2y
AudreyMorris @chrissy.ww I‘m the weirdo who reads backmatter (especially endnotes). I also read intros, even if they are 40 pages. I wish any app would figure out how to include pages with Roman numerals in page counts! 2y
chrissy.ww @AudreyMorris I count whatever pages I'm going to read and add or take it away from the total. Graphic novels are a pain in the ass cause alot of them don't have page numbers 😑 The ability to change the page numbers also helps depending on the edition you're reading etc. I'm a bit finicky with it 😂😂 2y

This lovely little book is one of the book of the month selections for the Reading 1001 group on Goodreads. It was a fast read, and sort of quirky (that could be because of the translation from Japanese) and I adored it.

Really a novella in two parts (Kitchen) plus a companion story (Moonlight Shadow), with themes of loss, grief, and love. Yoshimoto‘s writing is beautifully descriptive and the stories are touching.

The story telling and structure seems so quirky compared to what I‘m used to, and I‘m still not sure how much is odd translation, but although it‘s an odd little story to read, it‘s stark, visceral, and real, and the way she looks at simple things, achingly beautiful at times.
