Book two completed in my Salinger reread and once again I liked this better now than when I first read it. I understand the nuances of his stories better. As with all short story collections, some stories are better than others. My favorites are Teddy, A Perfect Day for Bananafish and Uncle Wiggily in Connecticut.
#hyggehourreadthon
Celebrated my sisters birthday last night with a family dinner but before hand I went to Baskin Robbins to pick up an ice cream cake. Of course I had to get a scoop of my favorite summer time flavor, baseball nut, and I took a few cool minutes to enjoy #hyggehourreadathon
I finished what should have been my last #storyaday2023 book at my son's hockey practice this morning. It was one of the best collections (if not the absolute best) I read this year. Fingers crossed that I'll catch up and finish today, but I have 12 and a half Akutagawa stories to go...
#BookCoverChallenge
Day 213.
Here I will note 365 books (or as many as I will have before I get tired) that have shaped my taste in literature. No explanations, no reviews. Just the cover of the book.
I do not challenge anyone. You are all welcome to take part.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Some of the most perfect short stories you‘ll ever read. “Bananafish,” “For Esme,” Uncle Wiggily,” and so on. Salinger‘s dialogue, realistic detail, and ability to effectively portray PTSD before it was widely discussed and accepted is incredibly perceptive. It‘s not a fast read. Salinger‘s published body of work is so small, you must savor it. #reread
Got my party pants 🎉👖 on and I‘m determined to finish this #reread before the year‘s end. Been dipping in and out for 3 months. Almost there! We always stay in and have appetizers, champagne, and watch football. My favorite kind of party!
✨ Happy New Year, Littens! ✨ #cheers 🥂
Not my favorite story of the bunch, but she does have green eyes && she insists upon being photographed.
Very odd. I didn‘t have the patience for the stories and characters...I read 2-1/2, then quit. I‘ll probably try again at some point

#SweetNovember Spell November with book titles ! Late to the party so I tagged myself.

#ForeverNovember #startswithN How can it be November?Still sad about losing RBG.It was sad to have a “don‘t feel safe to give out candy” Halloween.
Reading makes me happy , at least.
In honor of kicking off our #thatsclassic book club I thought it might be nice to gift someone a copy of the classic of their choice.
Comment a classic that inspired your love for literature and tag a friend and I‘ll enter you to win!
Before I fell for Austen, Bronte or Gaskell, Salinger had my 14 yr old angsty heart. I was all in from the minute I walked the NYC streets with Holden and worked through the emotional turmoil of the Glass family.
#67 of my year. Happy Friday 🥳🤘🏽
I enjoyed this quick read. Nine different stories all told with different narration techniques. The way the stories are told add context to the meaning of each tale. All commenting on war, post war life, ptsd, memories and nostalgia, and most importantly humanity.
Of all the Salinger I have read, this was my favorite. I tend to get impatient with the characters in his novels, but his short stories were great I think.
Today's teaching done, I can finally hide from the snow3and the world and just read ❤

4. A Collection of Essays or Short Stories
This book was Christmas gift from one of my colleagues. Salinger is one of his favorite authors.
One of the most meaningful gifts I‘ve ever received ☺️
I‘m in NYC to help out with my brand new nephew. I got to take a little break and headed to Argosy Books where I looked at a first edition Nine Stories.
#GratefulReads #AShortStory Well, nine short stories. 😂 I don't usually like short stories, but I love this collection!
@Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @OriginalCyn620
This is the moment I understand Holden. This book knocked me out and I wish terribly that I could call Salinger up and talk to him about it. Bananafish, Esme, Teddy. This was a glorious, heart-breaking, question-everything read. I really dig cynical, depressing reads, I guess...😂😂😂📚
Dropped off a copy of J. D. Salinger's Nine Stories downtown over the weekend 📚🧚♀️ Fingers crossed the person who finds it loves it as much as I do.

I haven‘t read any Salinger since I was 17, had just been dumped, and Holden Caulfield just understood how everyone at my school was a phoney... I enjoyed this tho! Very well crafted short stories particularly For Esme With Love and Squalor, which was more tender than I was expecting, and delightfully American - very escapist for this English girl. Minus some points for how he made references to native Americans 🤢
Happy Sunday all! Good morning.
Just waking up in Yorkshire with my parents, driving home today.

1. Nine Stories (tagged) and Underland by Robert McFarlane
2. I think the bricks that built the houses - which was an underwhelming read tbh most of what I liked about it was the bi representation which is hard to find.
3. Visiting York with my parents and going to a family member‘s birthday party!
I have not posted in 5 months...wow. I have not completed one book this year and I‘m disappointed in myself. I am going to commit to finishing this book by the end of the week. #dobetter
It‘s one of those books that I‘ll never forget
When Salinger saw this seductive pulp cover on his book (based on one of the short stories in this collection), he blew his top. Especially since his character Esme was a 7-year-old girl! From then on, rumor has it that J.D. added a mandatory clause in every publishing contract: nothing but a text title and his name could be on the cover-front or back-of any of his books. And absolutely no images. Who knew!

‘The Laughing Man‘ was the best, imo. Can‘t read any of JD‘s stuff anymore, ‘tho. Joyce Maynard‘s account of her time with him kind of ruined it for me. How can a guy who wrote with such seeming empathy act in such a despicable manner towards another human being. Don‘t trust your heroes, literary or otherwise.
I HAVE to get these!
From Little Brown‘s Instagram
Finished this yesterday, and god I loved every minute of it. I read this in high school (many moons ago) and enjoyed it, but I feel like I got so much more out of it this time. A new favorite. 💙❤
It was a good selection of short stories. I love how open ended most of them are. I also love the fact the most of them have multiple interpretations. Two stories stuck out to me, "A Perfect Day for Bananafish" and "Teddy". Both have controversial and gory endings.
These are 9 stories with assortment of characters who are desperate, lonely, ignorant and heartbreaking. The stories are mostly episodes of happenings in a day, save for one which is a story within a story but all deal with human relationships, death, effects of war. They‘re heavily dialogued and endings are abrupt. Each story is powerful & worth reading but my favourites-A Perfect Day For Bananafish, For Esme, Pretty Mouth & Green Eyes and Teddy.
I‘ve been dipping in and out of this collection of short stories. Need to #getback to it, still a few stories to read.

Happy independent bookstore day on this sunny Pittsburgh afternoon! Don't worry, I'll post my haul too 😉
"The fact is always obvious much too late, but the most singular difference between happiness and joy is that happiness is a solid and joy a liquid. Mine started to seep through its container as early as the next morning..."
I think Salinger is one of those writers that if you read his work without knowing it was written by him you could guess it was his writing - very distinctive. The dialogue in this is real and so well written with interruptions and repetitions, and all the characters really come to life in just a few pages. Every story is good. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Good night from my elves (and reindeer) to you!!
Felicia is reading Nine Stories. Finley is reading Murder on the Orient Express. Spike is reading The Woman Who Rides Like a Man.
Literal and literary elf on a shelf. Is it a thing? It should be a thing. 😂 📚 🎄

Hitting another slump 🙈 I don't know what is going on at the moment but I do have some reviews to post! In the mean time I'm going to try some short stories from an author I love to try and ignite the spark again!
