The Reader
The Reader | Traci Chee
A stunning debut set in a world where reading is unheard-of, perfect for fans of Inkheart and Shadow and Bone Sefia knows what it means to survive. After her father is brutally murdered, she flees into the wilderness with her aunt Nin, who teaches her to hunt, track, and steal. But when Nin is kidnapped, leaving Sefia completely alone, none of her survival skills can help her discover where Nin's been taken, or if she's even alive. The only clue to both her aunt's disappearance and her father's murder is the odd rectangular object her father left behind, an object she comes to realize is a book--a marvelous item unheard of in her otherwise illiterate society. With the help of this book, and the aid of a mysterious stranger with dark secrets of his own, Sefia sets out to rescue her aunt and find out what really happened the day her father was killed--and punish the people responsible. With overlapping stories of swashbuckling pirates and merciless assassins, The Reader is a brilliantly told adventure from an extraordinary new talent.

Between a So-So and a pan but ultimately leaned towards pan for me. This was just too slow and I thought the world building is terrible. It's part of a trilogy but so it could get better but I'm going to stop here. Has anyone else finished this series? Is it worth finishing? #2023 #1

Finally read this one last month and loved it! Now I have to try to read The Speaker soon, because that's the book I actually have in my Edelweiss TBR. Just a fantastic tale!

Sefia and Archer search for who killed her parents and all of the tales along the way.
I got this book almost two years ago at the Texas Book Festival after listening to her speak about the book. It has sat on my shelf unread for two years now.
Finally, I have finished it and it's a wonderful book if you like a story focusing on the power and magic of words on a page.

1. The Reader by Traci Chee, halfway now!
2. It's been a long time since I've read a short story, I think "the secret life of Walter Mitty", unless you count compilation short story books, then "Violent Ends".
3. Angels and Demons by Dan Brown 616 pages. I haven't read much at the beginning of the year.

Texreader I recommend short story Xingu by Edith Wharton. The ebook is free on Amazon. I‘m not a big fan of this author, or her style, but it‘s an excellent story about a women‘s book club and snobbery 4y
freeatlast1137 @Texreader I will check that out! 4y
Texreader @freeatlast1137 I‘m a slow reader, so it took me around 40 minutes to read. It‘s hilarious. 4y

After I finished reading this book I felt kind of unsatisfied. So much happens in the story but I feel like nothing ever gets answered. I also felt like some portions were useless to the story. I'm not sure if it plays a more important role later on, but I was left with the feeling of "what was the point of that?" I did, however, really enjoy the vivid story telling.

I flipped through this book when I first got it, just trying to get a feel for it. It sucked me in. I ended up reading all night with no regrets. It's a nearly perfect book. I loved the characters, I loved the writing, and I loved the storyline. Pirates, magic, assassins, secret societies, odd librarians, what more could a girl ask for? This book made me believe in YA fantasy again

The last book in the series is coming out TOMORROW! Go check out my blog (link in my profile) to see why I'm fangirling so hard!! 😍😍

Yeah_I_Read I read the first 100 or so pages of this when it came out but I decided to wait until the entire series was published so I‘m excited to begin again! 5y
RyeAnnUh @Yeah_I_Read oh! Oh my! You are in for a treat! I picked up #1 and could have swore I saw 2 on the shelf beside it and when I finished I ran back to the store to get it and it wasn't there... Did a little googling and found it didn't come out for 2 weeks! 😯😯 I just had a little deja Vu and knew I was going to love it. Lol. 5y

Plus: a major pack of pretty post-its / notepads with a glittery gold pen ( my grocery lists will be SO FANCY). Can‘t wait to cook up the mac & cheese recipes with my new strainer & spatulas - plus cookies for dessert. Thanks for your generosity!!! 😘❤️

Fantasy is usually not my bag, but I LOVED this book. It has something for everyone: adventure, romance, suspense, etc. It‘s a beautifully written ode to reading. Along with being an amazing story, the writer has included various clues throughout the text. I especially enjoyed the poem at the bottom of the pages. Definitely buying the second in the series today! 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

I read this very quickly, given its length. The first part dragged, but overall I found the story very engaging. There are varying narratives and it's not a strictly linear timeline, both of which can be confusing. Pay attention to the bits a the bottom of the pages! I'll read the next one but I'm not in a hurry. Kind of bloody and parts really require suspension of disbelief, but overall pretty good.

Jenny I have a friend who loved this one and sent me a copy. I need to read it soon. 6y

Simply put: this book is absolutely amazing.

The writing blew me away! The cover is gorgeous, the physical book design is perfect, the characters and plot and mystery and action we're so well done and interesting to read. I will absolutely pick up the sequel and I am so mad I took so long to read this. Definitely one of the best books I've read in the year so far.
PS the ending made me gasp/hiccup/cry.

Oops forgot to post this last night. So, I DNF'd this. There was way too much absurd suspension of disbelief required, & the basic element of the plot was itself a massive plot hole. A society being advanced to the point that this one was yet having no written language or even the concept of it is just ... nonsensical. And how did the girl teach herself to read if she had no idea what letters even were?? Plus was just kinda boring. Ah well 🤷🏻‍♀️
